Gotham City Impostors Review (XBLA)

Gotham City Impostors is a rare breed. Coming along mere months after the critically acclaimed and long anticipated Batman: Arkham City, Impostors offers you a skewed look at the Batman universe through a pair of mentally imbalanced eyes. Playing as either a member of the ‘Bats’ or the ‘Jokerz,’ two street gangs taking after their favorite costumed celebrity, you will find yourself running and gunning through the streets of Gotham in an inspired and satirical FPS.

“His is the path of righteousness, ours is the path of cordite and home-brew explosives.”

The game is spawned from a four issue story from Detective Comics (#867-870) wherein the Joker drugs Gotham City, causing mass hallucinations leading to Batman inspired maniacs who protect the innocent and Joker inspired madmen who want nothing more than to cause damage to the city. Upon jumping into the game, you’re treated to a brief intro level where the leader of the Bats, known only as ‘Sir,’ and his dimwitted second-in-command Marvin welcome you to the good fight and introduce you to the game’s mechanics.

If you’ve played Call of Duty, Battlefield, Bioshock, or any of the infinite first person shooters that dominate the current generation of gaming, then you’ll be right at home with Gotham City Impostors. The controls are immediately familiar save for a brief learning curve in timing some special moves. You are privy to roller-blades, glider wings, spring shoes, and grappling hooks to help you move about the map. Weapons range from the standard shotguns and machine guns to pipe bombs and PVC rocket launchers. The game plays fast and cartoony, both due to the weapons and travel options, and there is rarely any downtime to the action.

The game plays host to five maps, all of them highly vertical and full of locations immediately recognizable to fans of the comics. Alongside five maps you get three main game types. You have your standard team deathmatch, capture the flag, and king of the hill. On top of the multiplayer there is also a challenge mode to help grind for additional experience. Get ready to spend the majority of your time in straight up death matches, however. Over the last week or so of playing the game I have had difficulty filling up a lobby in either of the other multiplayer games types.

Experience points earned throughout the game can be used for a number of different purchases. You can unlock new costume pieces for your characters, new mascots that float above your head, different load-outs, and even customizable ‘calling cards’ that pop up on the screen of anybody unlucky enough to die by your hand. In an interesting move reminiscent of mobile gaming you can unlock items both with experience earned in-game or through micro transactions, paying real world money for the right to unlock items.

Gotham City Impostors is not revolutionary by any means. But it is a whole heap of fun. It is a multiplayer game that wouldn’t fit in with any current Batman game on the market while not being robust enough to be its own full retail release. This is a prime example of what a downloadable title should be, however. It is a fun idea packed with insane humor and something you should definitely download if you’re looking for a change of pace from the more serious FPS offerings out there.

The Secret World Gets Release Date

Durham, USA – February 21st, 2012 –Independent developer and publisher of online games, Funcom, today announced that the highly anticipated massively multiplayer online role-playing game ‘The Secret World’ will launch on June 19th, 2012. Originally slated for an April launch, Funcom has decided to invest more development time into the title in order to apply even more polish before launch.

Feedback from hands-on press events and beta testing has proven very positive, and Funcom intends to spend the additional development time focusing on polish and tweaking to maximize the potential of the game. The beta feedback so far is showing very positive reactions to core game features such as the role-playing systems, combat, missions, dungeons, story and immersion. Among the beta testers surveyed, almost 9 out of 10 say they will play the game at launch.

More than 750,000 gamers are now registered as beta testers, which is significantly higher than Funcom’s previous MMO ‘Age of Conan’ had at the same point in development. Funcom expects the number of beta registrations to grow significantly in the coming months, as the company ramps up its major PR and marketing initiatives towards launch.

“Allowing for even more time to polish the game really shows just how much faith Funcom as a company has in ‘The Secret World’ and how committed we are to making it the best it can be,” says Creative Director and Senior Producer Ragnar Tørnquist. “The additional time will also allow us to carry out even more quality beta testing, and soon we will also be announcing several public beta events where hundreds of thousands of gamers will get to test the game prior to launch.”

‘The Secret World’ is consistently mentioned as one of the most anticipated MMO’s in development. Mainstream publications such as Forbes and The Guardian have both listed‘The Secret World’ as a game to watch out for in 2012, and the game has also been singled out as one of the most anticipated games of 2012 by gaming sites such as G4TVVideoGamer, and RockPaperShotgun. Leading technology website VentureBeat highlighted ‘The Secret World’ as one of the top new game brands of 2012, and over at MMORPG.com the game was given the ‘Rising Star’ in the site’s Reader’s Choice Awards.

Following the first hands-on press event last year, ‘The Secret World’ was heralded as “one of the most distinctive MMO’s of the last 10 years” (Videogamer) and MMORPG.com went on to predict that “The Secret World is going to take the world by storm and set new standards in excellence in gameplay.” This month, Funcom is doing another extensive round of hands-on sessions with select press, showcasing all new content and mechanics. New press previews are expected to hit later this week following the hands-on events held throughout February where journalists from over 50 outlets worldwide attended.

’The Secret World’ is published by Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ: EA).  Those looking to join the ongoing beta test can sign up via the official site atwww.thesecretworld.com.

ROCCAT Asking if PC Gaming is Dead, Promising Announcement

Hamburg, February 21, 2012 – With the headline “Isn’t PC Gaming Dead?” emblazoned across the screen, German gaming peripherals manufacturer, ROCCAT Studios, today unveiled a website where they ask for fans’ opinions on the state of PC gaming.

“With all the talk lately,” the message reads, “you’d think PC gaming was over. Some say PC gaming isn’t dead, but think they need to breathe new life into it now and then with yet another ‘groundbreaking’ reinvention. But is all that necessary? Does PC gaming need a doctor? Does it need an undertaker?”

Says René Korte, ROCCAT™ Founder and CEO: “We hope to get gamers thinking about where things are headed for PC gaming. Certain gaming peripheral companies constantly announce that they’ve come up with the ‘Next Big Thing’ that’s going to reinvent things. But does PC gaming really need revolution? Or, rather, is evolution the way forward? We, as always, have our own ideas. And very soon we’re going to show the world a new and exciting one.”

Visitors are invited to give feedback via an on-screen entry form, and ROCCAT™ will post many of the answers on the site for users to read and discuss.

ROCCAT’s site also features a countdown clock ticking off the number of days until the company announces what they think “is the smartest way forward for PC gaming.”

Shank 2 – A Review (XBLA)

Developer Klei has brought its bloody 2D brawler back to Xbox Live Arcade with the release of Shank 2.  Sequels are always in a funny position with me, be it video game sequels or movie sequels.  You always hope that the sequel is better then the original, but more often then not, the sequel just let’s you down and can’t deliver on what the original brought.  Will Shank 2 deliver a better experience then the original Shank, or are we looking at just another effort to get your money out of your wallet?  Let’s find out with my full review of Shank 2 for the Xbox 360.

Story:

Ok, let’s get this out of the way first; it’s Shank so the story is going to take a back seat to the bloody 2D side scrolling action and game play.  I knew this before diving into the game for my review, but I still want to discuss how much or little the story of Shank 2 impacts your experience.

The story picks up with Shank taking a South American holiday, where he runs afoul with the local militia.  Shank then starts killing said militia for no other reason then the fact that one of them knocked his whiskey bottle out of his hands.  Shank fights his way to the local bar, finds another whiskey bottle, then discovers that the militia is still pissed about Shank killing so many of their number that they took one of his estranged friends hostage.  Shank once again starts his bloody killing spree in order to rescue his friend and destroy the militia in the process.

The story of Shank 2 doesn’t make much sense, nor does it have to.  The story, or lack thereof, did not impede on my enjoyment of eviscerating my way through to the end of the game.  The story is there just to give you some context as to why Shank is in South America in the first place and why he’s gutting hundreds of hapless militiamen and women.  The story is definitely the weakest link in Shank 2’s armor, but playing Shank 2 for it’s enthralling story line is like playing Minecraft for it’s stunning graphics, you’re just doing it wrong.

Game play:

Shank 2’s game play is much improved over the original.  The controls feel much more fluid and gives you much more of a feeling of being in complete control over Shank’s actions.  Switching up weapons during a combo is very easy and leads to many more satisfying kills, and even countering the enemy’s attacks has been made easier with the addition of a flashing exclamation point whenever the enemy is ready to attack.

Dodging in Shank 2 is also much improved.  With just a flick of the right stick, Shank will now roll out of the way of an incoming attack gracefully, then will get right back up to continue his murder spree.  Klei also improved on how Shank heals himself, by mapping the heal items to a different button then the attack buttons.  It’s much easier to pick up a bottle of booze to heal yourself without accidentally attacking, which would prevent you from healing yourself.

Local co-op for the campaign has been killed this time around, and it’s really a good thing.  The campaign is fairly short and easy to beat alone, so with a friend you would blow through it way to quickly.  Instead, Klei has come up with co-op survival mode that can be played locally or over Xbox Live.  Survival mode is a nice way to try to keep the life in Shank 2 well after the campaign has been finished, but for me it gets stale fairly quickly.

Overall, the game play of Shank 2 is vastly superior and improved to the original game play of Shank.  Klei really listened to the criticism and complaints that came up during reviews of Shank and set out to improve what was wrong.  The downside to this is that Shank 2 just feels like an improved version of Shank, without really being a sequel or adding anything more then just patching up the original’s issues.

Aesthetics:

The visuals and voice acting for Shank 2 are almost identical to what they were in the original Shank.  Visuals are still cell shaded to give the violence in Shank 2 that cartoon feeling while still being violent and bloody as the original.  The voice acting still does the job in Shank 2 as well, not being Oscar worthy, but definitely not the worst voice acting that I’ve heard either.

Overall:

When it all comes down to it, Shank 2 feels vastly improved and plays better then the original Shank in regards to game play.  However, what you really get is just more of the same.  If you liked Shank, then that’s not a bad thing at all.  It is an improvement over the original in regards to Klei fixing the problems that people had with the first game, but other then that Klei really didn’t put much more work into the sequel.  I would recommend it highly if you liked the first one or if you missed the original, especially for the price tag of $10, but if you are looking for a bigger experience then what the original gave you, you might be disappointed.
