Garmin Launches Instinct Esports Edition GPS Smartwatch

Garmin® International, Inc., a unit of Garmin Ltd.  (NASDAQ: GRMN), today announced the Instinct® Esports Edition, a rugged GPS smartwatch uniquely designed for esports athletes and enthusiasts to take their gaming performance to the next  level. Using Garmin’s proven health and fitness tracking technologies, the Instinct Esports Edition uses a dedicated esports activity function to track and analyze heartrate and stress during play, as well as offer long-term trend analysis. Garmin’s new STR3AMUP!™ PC streaming tool also provides Instinct  users the ability to livestream biometric data to audiences for a new streaming experience1. And with  over three days of battery life in esports mode, users can make the most of their playing time.

“Elite athletes around the world depend on Garmin products to monitor and improve their performance.  With the Instinct Esports Edition, esports athletes can tap into that same technology to track and  examine how their body responds to intense competition,” said Dan Bartel, Garmin vice president of  sales. “Players can also use Instinct’s data to make adjustments in their daily lives, whether it be  altering sleep patterns or activity levels, which can result in increased cognitive and physical  performance during play.”

The Instinct Esports Edition is purpose-built to military standards (MIL-STD 810), yet its exceedingly  lightweight design provides a distraction-free gaming experience. It provides up to 80 hours of battery  life in esports mode and up to 14 days in smartwatch mode for less time charging and more time  gaming. Instinct’s bold black and red colors, high-contrast display and rugged design bring to life a non traditional smartwatch. When paired with a compatible smartphone, Instinct also provides smart  notifications such as email, texts, and alerts to a user’s wrist so they can stay connected both during  and outside of game play.

Dedicated Esports Activity Profile

Prior to a match, users simply select the esports activity on Instinct. Once activated, Garmin’s proven  wrist-based heart rate technology2 analyzes and displays a user’s heartrate and stress level in addition  to the time of day and a game timer. Similar to other athletic competitions, actively monitoring stress  and heartrate in real time can provide the opportunity to manage physical and mental resources for  more effective and focused competition. Once a gaming session has ended, users can sync their  activity to the free Garmin Connect™ app3to view, store and analyze their data to see how their body  reacts in different gaming situations.

STR3AMUP! Livestream Biometrics

When using the esports activity, players can utilize Garmin’s new STR3AMUP! PC streaming tool to  broadcast heart rate, stress level and Body Battery™ live and embed this data into their video streams or recordings using customizable overlays. Displaying these metrics allows players to interface with  their audience and showcase – in real time – the physical and mental demands of competitive play.  STR3AMUP! allows audiences to be further engaged with their favorite player or team.

Body Metrics Tracking

Designed with an emphasis on elite-tier competition, the Instinct Esports Edition provides a variety of  valuable body metric analytics features2, so users can analyze and fine-tune how their body reacts to  competitive play3. These include:

  • Wrist-Based Heart Rate – Get heart rate data along with alerts if a user’s heart rate stays too  high or too low while at rest, and gauge how hard their heart is working during specific gaming  moments.
  • Advanced Sleep Monitoring – Users get a full picture of how they are sleeping with a breakdown  of light, deep and REM sleep stages. This allow users to interpret and make lifestyle  modifications for more focused play.
  • Stress Tracking – Using Garmin’s heart rate variability, the Instinct Esports Edition can calculate  an individual’s stress level score, giving them the opportunity to optimize stress management to  conserve mental and physical resources.
  • Body Battery Energy Monitor – Uses heart rate, stress and sleep data to determine how much  energy a user has – letting them know when to play and when to rest.
  • 30+ sports apps and robust activity tracking – Users can train with preloaded activity profiles  outside the gaming world. For athletes who want to monitor performance even further, an  optional Heart Rate Monitor chest strap is available for purchase separately.

The latest innovation from Garmin, the Instinct Esports Edition is available now for a suggested retail  price of $299.99.

Baldur’s Gate 3 Reveals Early Access Races & Classes

Larian Studios today announced the races, variations and classes that will be a part of Baldur’s Gate 3’s early access phase of development. Players will be able to select from 16 races/subraces, as well as six classes, from day one of early access, which starts Oct. 6, 2020, on Stadia, Steam and GOG.com.

At launch, players will be able to create humans, githyanki, elves, drow, half-elf, dwarves, halflings, and tieflings, including subraces of each race. The early access release of Baldur’s Gate 3 provides around 25 hours of content, designed for multiple playthroughs. Players can create their own characters in single-player, or as a party of up to four players in multiplayer, each with their own character.

Races more alien to the Sword coast — like the Drow and Githyanki — are so rare to the average NPC that you’ll find their interactions to be unique, as well. The world of Baldur’s Gate 3 is a highly reactive one, so this single choice will have huge ramifications across your play experience.

Baldur’s Gate 3’s character creation features photorealistic fantasy races based on 3D scans of actors and models (blemishes and all), selected because their features roughly resembled the direction for each race in the game, as well as, of course, for diversity and variety in the human-like races. Our team spent much of pre-production carefully selecting, scanning, and moulding these scans to become the base heads for character creation. Launching into early access is a total of 150 heads to pick from, across 16 races and subraces.

Alena Dubrovina, Lead Character Artist at Larian Studios, said, “When the cinematic dialogues were introduced for BG3, we realized that we needed to make a huge quality leap for the character art. We wanted to make characters look their best and put the bar very high. We had to be innovative to make such a large range of heads at the quality we wanted.

“We decided to use scanned faces in our production to create characters as realistic as possible. We scanned 40 people of different ages and ethnicity. While scouting for models we focused on features that would fit one of the fantasy races. We looked for faces that either had something unique about them or were very versatile to fit different characters. Eventually, we transformed that into approximately 150 unique heads of various races that you can see in-game now, and that number will keep growing. Some of the scanned heads kept their features, but others became a starting point for creating new faces. We also used scanned data as a learning resource because there is no better sculptor than nature.”

Here’s what you’ll have access to at the start of early access:

Gallery

Human

  • The most common face to see in Faerûn, humans are known for their tenacity, creativity and endless capacity for growth. They live fully in the present — making them well-suited to the adventuring life — but also plan for the future, striving to leave a lasting legacy.

Githyanki

  • Githyanki are peerless warriors from the Astral Plane, known for their legendary silver blades and red dragon mounts. They seek the total destruction of mind flayers, whose ancient empire enslaved the githyanki for millennia.

Elf

  • High Elf: Heirs of the mystical Feywild, high elves value magic in all its forms. Even those who do not study spellcraft can manipulate the Weave.
  • Wood Elf: Wood elves spend their reclusive lives in Faerûn’s forests. Decades of training in archery and camouflage are enhanced by an otherworldly swiftness.

Drow

  • Seldarine Drow: Drow are the result of an ancient schism between the elven deities Corellon Larethian and Lolth. The latter’s treachery drove the drow into the Underdark, where they splintered into warring factions. Seldarine drow can be found seeking allies from all over Faerûn, aiming to settle their conflict with Lolth — and each other — by any means necessary.
  • Lolth-Sworn Drow: Raised by Lolth’s cult in the city of Menzoberranzan, these drow extol the virtues of their corrupt and merciless goddess. Lolth marks her followers with bright red eyes so the Underdark will learn to fear drow on sight.

Half-Elf

  • High Half-Elf: A touch of the Feywild remains in half-elves with this bloodline. Even those untrained in magic possess a hint of wild power.
  • Wood Half-Elf: Like their wood elf parents, these half-elves have a quickened stride and eye for stealth. Yet many break away from isolation in Faerûn’s forests to explore the rest of the Realms.
  • Drow Half-Elf: Most half-drow result from liaisons between Seldarine drow and surfacers. While half-drow inherit a few magical gifts, they aren’t usually raised in the Underdark.

Dwarf

  • Gold: Gold dwarves are known for their confidence and keen intuition. The culture of their Deep Kingdom values family, ritual and fine craftsmanship.
  • Shield: Shield dwarves survived a long fall from grace, surrendering many of their ancient kingdoms in wars with goblins and orcs. These losses have led to a cynical mindset, yet shield dwarves will endure anything to restore their ancestral homelands.

Hafling

  • Lightfoot Halfling: Lightfoot halflings are stealthy but social, travelling all over Faeûn to make names for themselves.
  • Strongheart Halfling: Legends say dwarven blood gave stronghearts their hardiness. Resistant to poison and wellsprings of endurance, these halflings easily hold their own.

Tiefling

  • Asmodeus Tiefling: Bound to Nessus, the deepest layer of the Hells, these tieflings inherit the ability to wield fire and darkness from the archdevil Asmodeus’ infernal bloodline.
  • Mephistopheles Tiefling: Descended from the archdevil Mephistopheles, these tieflings are gifted with a particular affinity for arcane magic.
  • Zariel Tiefling: Tieflings from Zariel’s bloodline are empowered with martial strength and can channel searing flame to punish their enemies.

The Sword Coast attracts adventurers from across all of Faerûn. The nearly 600 NPCs you can meet in Act 1 are drawn from across the Forgotten Realms. Character creation includes hundreds of options to ensure that each character is unique, and the world reacts to you in ways that help ensure you and your choices are unique, too.

In early access, you’ll have six classes to choose from — Cleric, Fighter, Ranger, Rogue, Warlock and Wizard — each with at least two subclasses available. Will you be a beast-taming, mage-breaking, charlatan halfling ranger with a toxic frog as a familiar, or a noble githyanki eldritch knight who let herself be seduced by the Absolute, with the ability to psionically drag her enemies towards her? Or will you go for a more traditional tiefling warlock who made a pact with the devil? The choices are endless!

Bohemia Interactive Unveil Arma 3: CSLA Iron Curtain

Publisher Bohemia Interactive and third-party developer CSLA Studio are excited to announce the upcoming release of Arma 3’s second Creator DLC: CSLA Iron Curtain. Scheduled for release later this year, the CSLA Iron Curtain downloadable content pack will take players back to an alternate version of the Cold War in 1980s Czechoslovakia. The store page for the upcoming DLC is already live on Steam.

CSLA (or ČSLA) stands for “Československá lidová armáda” in Czech and “Československá ľudová armáda” in Slovak, which refers to the Czechoslovak People’s Army. These were the armed forces of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia and the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic from 1954 until 1990. With both Bohemia Interactive and the CSLA Studio developers coming from the Czech Republic, this particular Creator DLC stays very close to home by exploring the country’s contemporary history and taking a look at what life in Czechoslovakia and its heavily-guarded border with West Germany during the 1980s could have been like.

The Arma 3 Creator DLC: CSLA Iron Curtain will include:

  • Original 256 km2 “Gabreta” landlocked terrain, with deep forests, windy mountains, and calm valleys
  • Cold War-era armed forces of the United States and Czechoslovakia, as well as local rebel fighters
  • Ground and air vehicles
  • Weapons and gear
  • Singleplayer and multiplayer scenarios

Creator DLC is a label for original new Arma 3 projects made by third-party developers and published by Bohemia Interactive. It enables external talent to earn a financial reward for their work, while players get to enjoy more new quality content. The first Creator DLC, Global Mobilization – Cold War

Germany, has managed to achieve over 50,000 sales since its launch in April 2019. More Creator DLC projects besides Global Mobilization – Cold War Germany and CSLA Iron Curtain are currently in development.

In response to community feedback on the initial release of the first Arma 3 Creator DLC, Bohemia Interactive – in close co-operation with CSLA Studio – have decided to host a small-scale, closed beta test in the coming weeks ahead of CSLA Iron Curtain’s planned full release. Starting today, selected members of the Arma 3 community will be invited to help report on any remaining technical issues as well as take the upcoming DLC for a test drive on a wider variety of PC systems.

Furthermore, as soon as the CSLA Iron Curtain DLC releases, Bohemia Interactive and CSLA Studio plan to make compatibility data for non-owners of the DLC available via the Arma 3 Steam Workshop – similar to how this is now also done for the Global Mobilization – Cold War Germany Creator DLC. This solution enables people who own the Creator DLC and those who do not to still play together on multiplayer servers that make use of the Creator DLC’s assets. Access to DLC terrains and singleplayer content will remain exclusive to the owners of the DLC, and restrictions to the in-game use of DLC assets by non-owners apply.

The release date and pricing of the Arma 3 Creator DLC: CSLA Iron Curtain will be shared at a later time.

Razer Blackshark V2 Review

The Razer Blackshark was a favorite headset of mine for quite some time thanks to its aviation-inspired design. Hold onto your seats as the new Razer Blackshark V2 is out and, while it no longer boasts the aircraft style, it does offer some serious features and sound quality. In terms of its outward appearance, the Razer Blackshark V2 is rather simple with a dark gray/black frame and black padding. There are two green Razer logos on the headphones which are equipped with some Chroma RGB lighting and there is a volume control knob on the left ear cup along with a (removable) flexible boom microphone. The Razer Blackshark V2 version comes with its own USB sound card and this is what enables the THX features.

The new Razer Blackshark V2 offers some serious features – thanks, in part, due to its partnership with George Lucas-created THX. The biggest of these is the THX Spatial Audio technology. This virtual 7.1 surround sound solution allows gamers to customize their soundscape and get the best sound possible. It’s pretty darn amazing when in use and switching back to regular headphones afterwards is jarring… Razer BlackShark V2 users can also use THX Game Profiles as well, which are pre-made audio profiles for a variety of games, with more to come. Of course, the Blackshark V2 is compatible with Razer’s Synapse control suite and there is where you can tweak and adjust all your sound settings and profiles. The whole GUI used in this process is easy to navigate and attractive to boot, which is never a bad thing.

Also in the new Razer Blackshark V2 is Razer’s new Triforce Titanium 50mm drivers, which includes a patented design with separated ports to project high, mid, and low-level sound, mimicking a tweeter, speaker, subwoofer all in one unit. Is it perfect? No. But, it is very – VERY good. And how does all this technology stack to create an aural experience? Very well, and the Blackshark V2 provided outstanding audio quality for every game I played with it – from shooters to flight simulations. The THX music mode also provides excellent audio when jamming out to your favorite tunes. Additionally, the Razer Hyperclear Cardioid microphone has some very good audio quality and advanced, passive background noise cancellation. It has a flexible boom so you can orient the microphone wherever you wish. Making it even more flexible is the fact that you can remove it from the headphones if its not needed. Making the Razer Blackshark V2 even better is its padding. I could wear the headset for hours and never get any pain or pressure points. This is a terrific set of headphones for when endurance is needed – whether its at a tournment or just listening to music all night while doing homework.

The Razer BlackShark V2 is compatible with both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One game consoles. All you have to do is plug it in and you’re off to the races. Something that is worth mentioning is that the audio quality degrades somewhat in this mode as you do not have access to the USB sound card or the THX Game Profiles, modes, etc. However, it is still a fine headset for console use.

Making things even better is its $99 dollar price tag which, when considering the inclusion of the USB sound card, is a good value for the money. Simply put, the Razer Blackshark V2 gaming headset is comfortable, affordable, and it sounds great. The only thing which would drive my 9.3 score to a full 10 out of 10 would be wireless capability. Razer’s wireless headphones are outstanding, so I know they could put that technology in place with the Blackshark V2.
