Universal Studios Hollywood Celebrates the Studio Tour’s 60th Birthday

Universal Studios Hollywood invites guests to take a nostalgic walk down memory lane as the destination celebrates the Studio Tour’s 60th milestone anniversary with a dedicated experiential program from April 26 through August 11, 2024.

In 1964, Universal City Studios invited tourists to take a whirlwind adventure for a first-hand look at Hollywood moviemaking in action. Five times a day, for approximately just over two hours, Monday through Friday, iconic red and white Glamor Trams, with their ruffled awnings, would whisk eager tourists through its studio backlot to be a fly on the wall in the making of Universal movie and television productions.

Over the span of 60 years, Universal Studios Hollywood has cultivated the Studio Tour into a dynamic world-renowned experience visited by over 200 million guests worldwide. As part of the origins of Universal Studios Hollywood and Universal Destinations & Experiences’ (UDX) global theme parks portfolio, the Studio Tour is stepping into the spotlight and inviting guests along for the ride as part of this notable celebration.

“The Studio Tour paved the way for the development of Universal Studios Hollywood and celebrating its 60-year milestone pays homage to its indelible impact,” said Scott Strobl, Executive Vice President and General Manager, Universal Studios Hollywood. “The Studio Tour is a crown jewel in our theme park portfolio and a beloved attraction for millions of guests. We are thrilled and honored to share our enthusiasm for its historic relevance with guests both new to the experience as well as those who have journeyed with us along the way.”

In addition to the return of several iconic red and white candy-striped Glamor Trams, the centerpiece of the Studio Tour 60th anniversary celebration will treat guests to the unique opportunity to step off the tram and onto a legendary movie set where an original, fully restored 1964 vintage Glamor Tram awaits. The area will provide additional memorable photo opportunities and social media posts, including a giant King Kong backdrop and the theme park’s original hanging Jaws shark.

A highlight of the 60th celebration also includes the “Earthquake—The Big One” attraction, which debuted on the Studio Tour in 1989 and has been shaking things up ever since with its eerily realistic 8.3 magnitude quake. To coincide with this diamond anniversary, this simulated natural disaster attraction has undergone a top to bottom renovation and will debut anew with contemporary technology and aesthetics.

Other exciting features will include a visit to Courthouse Square aboard the Studio Tour, where scenes from the blockbuster Back to the Future movies were filmed and where an original time machine picture car will sit prominently on display, not far from a nearby Doc Brown character.

As the Studio Tour navigates around the historic backlot, additional surprises from a time long gone will make a cameo appearance, including the temporary return of the 1976 Runaway Train as warning bells and sirens alarm from its stationary location. Moments of nostalgia will also be featured aboard the tram’s monitors showing clips of former Studio Tour attractions as they once appeared on the tour.

Universal Studios Hollywood will also be digging into its archive of prehistoric props with a behemoth dimensional Tyrannosaurus rex dinosaur display used in the promotion of Universal Pictures’ Jurassic World movie. This giant, growling creature, bearing a large bite of sharp teeth, will be located adjacent to a locked paddock of wild dinosaurs that can be heard screeching and clamoring to escape.

To commemorate the spirt of Hollywood’s glamorous past, Universal Studios Hollywood is partnering with the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, responsible for promoting and enhancing the business, cultural and civic well-being of Hollywood, and the Hollywood Sign Trust, a 501(c)3 nonprofit, responsible for maintaining the Hollywood Sign and educating the world about its historical and cultural importance.

Originally installed as a giant billboard for a real estate development (Hollywoodland) in 1923, today, the Hollywood Sign is a universal metaphor for the place, industry, lifestyle and aspiration known as Hollywood. It stands as one of the world’s best-known monuments and was declared Los Angeles Cultural Historical Monument No. 111 in 1973.

“The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce is thrilled that this incredible opportunity will enable guests to step off the Studio Tour at Universal Studios Hollywood and enjoy an up close look at a perfectly scaled replica of the Hollywood Sign,” said Steve Nissen, CEO and President of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. “It has been a dream of millions to be able to climb the hillside to the actual sign atop Mt. Lee, so this collaboration with Universal Studios Hollywood is the ideal way to inspire guests around the world to dream big.”

“We are thrilled to share in this 60-year milestone with Universal Studios Hollywood and its behind-the scenes magic, which definitely strikes a chord with the hopes and dreams the Hollywood Sign brings to its fans, ” said Jeff Zarrinnam, Chair of the Hollywood Sign Trust. “And for people to have this vibrant way to experience the Sign, including capturing selfies and photos, with such an iconic leader in the industry is a true celebration. We congratulate Universal on this big anniversary.”

As a result of this collaboration and in celebration of both the Hollywood Sign’s centennial and the Studio Tour’s 60th anniversary, Universal Studios Hollywood is debuting the first-ever original replica of the Sign to be situated along the studio backlot, adjacent to the tram step off moment. This large scale reproduction was meticulously crafted from the Sign’s historic records to faithfully recreate this iconic landmark and bring it to visiting Studio Tour guests, where it will be nestled for several years along the hillside. The original Hollywood Sign towers at 45 feet; this official replica will stand tall at 10 feet to complement the landscape.

Guests disembarking the tram to experience the original movie set on the studio backlot will now have the unique and exclusive opportunity to pose for the first time ever in close proximity to this officially sanctioned Hollywood Sign replica for interactive social media posts.

The Studio Tour is a world class attraction that takes guests onto an authentic movie and television production lot, past state-of-the-art soundstages, through hyper-realistic outdoor sets and even past the studio’s corporate offices where, behind closed doors, exciting deals are being made. As guests queue up to board the Studio Tour and experience the magic and mystery of the studio backlot, they will be met with archival images and videos detailing its incredible history, along with an all-original augmented reality (AR) Studio Tour trivia challenge designed to test their knowledge of this iconic attraction through the years with the ability to share their results on social media.

While much has transpired in six decades, the Studio Tour has remained true to its roots of immersing guests in the awe-inspiring world of movie-making magic, providing remarkable access to production sets on a genuine studio backlot. The once celebrated two-hour Glamor Trams have been replaced with a contemporary, approximate 60-minute experience, infused with advanced technology that enlightens and entertains millions of film buffs, theme park fans and tourists alike visiting from across the globe.

With its sights on the future, the Studio Tour is in the midst of converting its fleet of 21 diesel-hydraulic engines to electric trams to help reduce carbon emissions and improve the guest experience by reducing noise associated with the diesel-hydraulic engine.

From ushering guests past iconic sets, including the renowned film Psycho directed by Alfred Hitchcock—one of the very first film sets accessible for visitors to see up close in 1964—to the evolution of Universal Studios Hollywood, immersing guests in innovative, groundbreaking rides and attractions themed to compelling film and television properties, the Studio Tour was “act one” in the development of the notable Universal Destinations & Experiences portfolio of global theme parks.

Rounding out the entire Studio Tour 60th anniversary celebration will be a selection of specially created, highly themed food and beverages, curated by the theme park’s Executive Chef Julia Thrash, along with themed merchandise and memorabilia.

A special Dining Pass celebrating the 60th anniversary will be available for purchase and will allow guests to choose six eligible menu items: a choice of two entrees, plus a choice of four snacks, sides, desserts or beverages at participating restaurants or food carts. Select in-park venues and food carts are excluded, and the Dining Pass is valid only on the day of purchase.

Guests basking in a day of nostalgia can step back in time and enjoy retro style entrees, sweets and drinks. A sampling of items at select locations will include:

  • Hollywood & Dine, located on the Upper Lot of the theme park, will serve up BBQ Brisket Sandwich, BBQ Cheeseburger, BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwich, BBQ Chicken Sandwich, Summer Strawberry Salad, BBQ Corn Dog and Film Reel Cookie Sandwich.
  • Mel’s Diner, also located on the Upper Lot, will feature such favorites as Mel’s Classic Burger, Beyond Meat® BBQ Cheeseburger, Chili Cheese Dog, Tuna Melt, Chicken Caeser Salad, as well as two entrees that harken back to iconic mid-century TV dinner style platters: the Meatloaf Combo and Fried Chicken Combo.
  • Studio Scoops ice-cream parlor on the Lower Lot will whip up tasty treats in honor of the theme park’s signature attractions.
  • And lastly, the City Snack Shop standalone outdoor food cart, located on the Upper Lot, will be transformed into a Glamor Tram and serve up a selection of treats emblematic of the 60-year celebration, including the Glam Tram Cookie, Film Reel Cookie Sandwich, Giant 60th Pretzel, 60th Celebration Cookies and Banana Breath Popcorn.

An all-new dedicated Studio Tour 60th anniversary merchandise collection will invite guests to take home a piece of this historical celebration with such unique products as a 60th anniversary popcorn bucket shaped as an iconic Glamor Tram, plus an array of retro-themed souvenirs, including a Glamor Tram themed pillow, blanket, backpack, jacket, tops, tee shirts, hats, mugs, keychains, salt and pepper shakers, chocolates and candies.

Viking Survival Game ASKA Closed Beta Test Announced

The Eye of Odin shines upon you this day! The next Closed Beta for ASKA, a third-person Viking sandbox survival builder from Romanian indie developer Sand Sailor Studio, kicks off April 15 and will run until April 21. Players ready to embark on an exciting Viking expedition can sign up for a chance to join the closed beta by wishlisting ASKA on Steam, and heading over to the ASKA Discord for more information (closed beta sign-up closes on April 5).

In ASKA, players find themselves shipwrecked on a mysterious island where they must tame an uncharted land and build a Viking empire worthy of Odin’s praise. Solo or together with up to three friends, players must survive, summon intelligent NPC villagers, collect resources and build a thriving settlement. Players will need to automate, manage and defend their expanding tribe and prepare to survive the bitter winters.

“ASKA stands as a testament to what a dream-team of just 10 people can achieve over the course of 4 years: an ambitious co-op survival tribe builder where you’re never alone, where you work alongside lively AI villagers that are almost indistinguishable from players, all woven into a deep city builder-like economy system,” said Cristian Diaconescu, Creative Director at Sand Sailor Studio. “We’re entering the final phase of our beta testing period and we can’t wait to give players the power to build their very own truly functional Viking village, who knows what they’ll build.”

Developed as the third game installment by Sand Sailor Studios and published by Thunderful, ASKA’s unique gameplay lies in its AI systems. ASKA provides a unique flavor vs other survival games on the market, by giving players the opportunity to release themselves from the shackles of repetitive resource collection and management. The player is the master constructor, focusing on leading the tribe and designating the location of buildings. The intelligent AI NPCs are then assigned to work around the town, providing camaraderie and establishing a thriving village.

Budding Vikings ready to start their adventure are encouraged to wishlist the game today and visit www.playaska.com. Follow the latest ASKA news by joining Discord and becoming a follower on YouTubeTikTokInstagramTwitter/X and Facebook

CES Expo 2024 Wrap Up: 100 Years of the CTA

It was 1967, a year marked by tragedy and technological promise. The Vietnam War raged, the Apollo 1 fire claimed the lives of three astronauts, and the inaugural Consumer Electronics Show (CES) debuted in New York City. With 250 exhibitors and 17,500 attendees, it was the humble beginning of an event that would shape the future of electronics, bringing together innovators and enthusiasts from around the globe.

The Consumer Technology Association (CTA) traces its roots back to 1924 when it was founded as the Radio Manufacturers Association. As technology evolved, so did its name – incorporating “television” and “electronics” before settling on its current title in 2015. Initially focused on standards and policies for radio, the CTA quickly expanded to encompass the rapidly growing world of television and, ultimately, the full spectrum of electronic technologies. Its flagship event, CES, blossomed into a massive, world-renowned showcase.

Photo Gallery

Like many live events, CES attendance plummeted due to the COVID-19 pandemic and hasn’t yet fully rebounded. However, it remains resilient, recovering even as other major shows, like E3, have faltered. In a post-pandemic landscape where many companies may opt for virtual events, CES stands as one of the few major conventions demonstrating strong recovery. While the days of packed Las Vegas hotels for CES might be a thing of the past, the industry is constantly changing, and new ways to host conventions could emerge.

For now, CES continues to highlight exciting advancements in consumer electronics. Car tech is booming, with innovations ranging from heads-up displays to flying vehicles. Drones of all sizes take center stage, from playful light-show toys to professional 4K models. Virtual reality, haptic feedback devices, cutting-edge farm equipment, and the latest LG screens all find their place at CES. While attendance may not have returned to peak levels, CES Las Vegas endures. As it gradually recovers, we can hope that the next major milestone will see a return to its pre-pandemic glory.

Six Flags Great Adventure Holiday in the Park 2023 Review

My husband and I visited Six Flags Great Adventure to celebrate the Holiday in the Park, and we had a fantastic time! The moment you walk into the park, the holiday decorations and festivities immediately draw you in, with holiday music playing everywhere you go. Many took advantage of the bonfires throughout the park to warm up by or roast a marshmallow for their s’more, while others walked with hot cocoa in mittened hands.

Six Flags does an excellent job of making you feel like the holidays are all around you instead of keeping its decorations solely around its entrance area. The musicians were also decked out in holiday attire as they played holiday music, and their reindeer dancers kept the fun going later in the evening with festive performances of classic and unexpected songs reworked with holiday themes.

We spent time in the arcade playing old games we loved, and we rode the Buccaneer ride, laughing and screaming with the other patrons. We were mostly there to enjoy the ambiance this time around, and Six Flags didn’t disappoint. Getting a spiked eggnog drink within a giant igloo was the perfect way to end our evening as we watched the fake snow fall outside.

This was a wonderful experience, and those with kids would also have a blast enjoying the many rides and attractions throughout the park. Don’t forget to say hi to Santa! Holiday in the Park runs from now until January 1st, 2024. Check out the official website for ticket information and event scheduling.

The Strangers Trilogy First-Look Images

Here are some first look images from The Strangers Trilogy. From master director Renny Harlin (Cliffhanger, Die Hard 2, The Exorcist: The Beginning) comes a new trilogy of terror. In Chapter I, Madelaine Petsch (TV’s “Riverdale”) stars as a young woman starting a new life with her fiancé. Suddenly, during a road trip stop in a remote vacation rental in the woods, they become the prey of a mysterious gang of masked strangers who attack without warning or reason. What begins as a fight to stay alive becomes one woman’s journey of courage and cunning in this horror series bridging three compelling films.

STLV: 57 Year Mission Las Vegas Photo Gallery

Creation Entertainment has been continuing its SciFi convention for 57 years now and it shows no signs of slowing down! There is a particular scifi series that the convention is most know for, but very much like the universe its associated with, its extremely inclusive to whatever show or even genre is welcomed as part of their community. As a result you may find someone in a BSG uniform chatting with ToS Deadpool while ST and SW fans look on with smiles and laughter.

The show is also known for the diversity of actors from across the film and television industry who share the comradery of the event through great panels and lots of photo and autograph possiblities and this year was no exception. I saw an actor from one of my all time favorite horror movies on the same stage as actors who have played a character with the last name “Kirk” on various scifi shows. It’s a convention where fans and their heroes get a chance to be scifi nerds together.

It’s probably a bit obvious that names of shows and individual actors have been danced around and that is because that is how things were during the event. There is a very big strike going on at this time so Creation Entertainment and the members of film and television unions tried to avoid discussing bodies of artistic work they have done as part of the strike. Some moderators asked questions about how the entertainers had gotten into the business and any other things they would have wanted to be if not actors basically discussing personal rather than acting related work. Others addressed the elephant in the room and talked about the strike and why it was happening and why it is so very important.

Even with all of that the panels were informative and entertaining and definitely worth hitting every year. The convention floor always has a large mix of vendors with items from just about every major scifi series along with plenty of autograph/selfie tables for many of the scifi celebrities in attendance and the secondary stage hosts many panels on real life science and space subjects. STLV: 57 Year Mission Las Vegas was another rousing and well attended success. We can’t wait to see what’s talked about and seen next year at STLV: 58 Year Mission Las Vegas from Creation Entertainment.

Midsummer Scream 2023 – Frightening Fun at the Long Beach Convention Center

The folks at Midsummer Scream are back with their flagship event: Midsummer Scream! On our first night at the event, we attended an amazing, albeit unofficial “preview night” like you’d find at the San Diego Comic-Con. The crowds were low, the weather was nice and cool, and you could roam the aisles with ease to purchase wares and visit with friends. It was such an outstanding time and we bought way too much stuff!

The next day, the convention proper began and the turnout was incredible! The general admission line went across the pedestrian bridge in front of the hotel and, had it not been wrapped back around against itself, would have ended up in the Pacific. The VIP line was also full but that line moved much more quickly. I highly recommend their VIP tickets if you plan to attend more than one day. The perks of earlier entry into panels as well as the event itself (you get in an hour ahead) is well worth the extra ticket price.

The Hall of Shadows made is triumphant return as well, featuring a number of local haunts presenting mini-haunt versions of themselves for attendees to experience.  The Decayed Brigade slider crew was back as well with an impressive showing of their sliding skill. The amount of bodies an experienced haunt slider can jump over always impresses me. The one thing that is a bummer is that, during the Decayed Brigade shows, a lot of the mini-haunts in the Hall of Shadows go dark as the music and noise from the show is overpowering. Part of me would like to see the Decayed Brigade moved out of that room somewhere else just for their show so the Hall of Shadows can keep cycling attendees through the attractions. But, I digress…

The Long Beach Convention Center has a huge convention floor and Midsummer Scream seemed to make use of every square foot. So many vendors featured effects, props, artwork, sculptures, and other macabre wares that my wallet was substantially lighter when I left than when I entered the floor. We even got to put our cell phone on the worlds smallest horror rollercoaster.

Outside the convention center, there were several food trucks lined up, each with a culinary flare all their own. Also, if you stayed at the Hyatt Regency next door, you could eat at their fantastic eatery in the lobby. Also, staying at the hotel is super convenient as it is basically attached to the convention center, making your parking experience way easier.

Overall, it was an amazing return for Midsummer Scream and I look forward to next year’s! So – stay tuned for more!
