Immortals: Fenyx Rising Review (Xbox Series X)

Immortals: Fenyx Rising is not the game I imagined myself wanting to show off my Xbox Series X with but dang, 2020 was wild, y’all!

That’s it. Review done. 8 out of 10. Let’s go home and play more Immortals: Fenyx Rising. (Editor’s note: You have to actually write a review.) Oh. Okay, then.

Originally announced at E3 2019 under the objectively better name “Gods and Monsters,” Immortals: Fenyx Rising struck many as a sort of “my first Assassin’s Creed,” an apt impression considering the Greek Mythology flavored adventure is the product of Ubisoft Quebec, developers of the Greek Mythology flavored Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey. Spend the opening hours playing the game and you’ll quickly find that you’re not playing an Assassin’s Creed game at all, rather something much closer to Nintendo’s Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Immortals: Fenyx Rising gives players an impressive open world adventure densely packed with things to do and locations to explore, a bold art style highlighted by eye popping colors, and a focused and straightforward story that almost bends under the weight of cringe-worthy jokes and stiff characters.

Immortals tells the story of Fenyx, a mortal soldier thrust into adventure when their ship wrecks on the shores of the mysterious Golden Isle. Fenyx discovers that their fellow soldiers, including their brother, have all been turned to stone as a result of the titan Typhon attacking the island in an attempt to overthrow the gods of the Greek Pantheon. Actually, let me take a step back. Immortals tells the story of Prometheus telling Zeus the story of Fenyx coming to the gods’ aid, a structure that becomes the source of most of the game’s humor. Prometheus and Zeus narrate almost the entirety of the game, frequently breaking in and making light of whatever Fenyx is doing at the moment.

And what does Immortals: Fenyx Rising do?

I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t going into Immortals: Fenyx Rising expecting another Ubisoft open-world checklist simulator. Ubisoft has… a thing. They do side quests and collectibles and RPG-lite mechanics in just about every game they produce these days with the only real differences being what genre you’re doing it in. Immortals chooses to not do that. Yes, there are map markers to hit and towers to climb and skill trees to unlock but it’s all so much more focused than your typical Ubi product. Rather than climbing endless towers and liberating endless outposts to clear your map, there are four, maybe five things to climb and at any point, much like in Breath of the Wild, Fenyx can use the gift of far sight to zoom in on the environment and tag interesting things to go do.

The environment is where Immortals differs from the standard Ubisoft formula in a simple yet wonderful way. We’ve all gotten used to the normal Ubi-fare of liberating an area and instantly having our map break out into a chicken-pox like infection of side quest dots to check off. Immortals goes the opposite direction and makes you find things before they appear on your map. And finding things is the biggest draw that keeps me coming back to the game. This world is, in a word, dense. Where many modern open world games make travel between missions feel like a chore, Immortals never finds you going much more than a few moments between stumbling upon interesting environmental puzzles to solve or dungeons to fight your way into and solving the environment challenges you to open your eyes and look around as the solutions require a basic level of critical thinking rather than holding the right stick to ping the environment to show chests lurking on the other sides of walls **cough Assassin’s Creed cough**.

Ubisoft Montreal has created a stunningly gorgeous world to do this all in. Colors pop and the game runs at a buttery smooth 60fps. I played this on my aforementioned Xbox Series X and not once did I experience any frame dips or crashes. The expected Ubisoft open world bugs are nowhere to be found and instead I’ve been pleased to find that this is a game that just… works, which is more than can be said for some other marquee titles hitting consoles this holiday season.

Now, what’s not to like? Thankfully, not much. Character models look a little rigid and animate a bit closer to Thunderbolts-era marionettes than the Pixar/Rare style cartoonish energy it’s clear Ubi is going for. Luckily you don’t have to see characters interact all that often if you don’t want to and the skip button is always ready to go when you find yourself in a cinematic. The skip button will also come in handy when the game tries to make you laugh. The writing goes for it but often feels trapped somewhere between the kid friendly PG vibe the game wears on its sleeve and more mature PG-13 humor found in much of Zeus’ dialogue, and rather than trying to find a family friendly subversive balance, the game more often feels like its failing to pick a lane. That all being said, though, it’s never worse than slightly eye rolling and it’s often easy enough to over look.

While it may have a silly name and is unlikely to spawn a franchise, Immortals: Fenyx Rising helps me make a damn good argument to my wife why I had to spend $500 on that new Xbox Series X console. Taking more than a few notes from one of the best open-world adventure games of the modern era, Ubisoft has created a Zelda clone that meets the challenge of being the next best thing for anybody who doesn’t own a Switch. To top it all off, Ubisoft has given next-gen owners a game that looks great in HDR and runs solid with none of the bugs to be found that are plaguing other titles hitting the holiday shelves. Immortals: Fenyx Rising is a game that feels like Ubisoft stepping out of its comfort zone and trying something, while maybe not new, refreshingly different enough from what they’ve become known for.

Final Review Score: 8 out of 10!

Mad Catz Unveils the R.A.T. DWS Wireless Gaming Mouse

Mad Catz Global Limited, the leading innovators in gaming hardware, are excited to announce the new R.A.T. DWS gaming mouse, a wireless gaming mouse from the beloved Mad Catz R.A.T. series. Equipped with the hyper-responsive 2ms DAKOTA™ mechanical switch, diversified accessories, and a 16K high-end sensor, R.A.T. DWS achieves the ultimate performance, tracking ability, and longevity which other gaming mice can’t compete with.

R.A.T. DWS is one of the most customizable wireless gaming mice in the market. Moreover, the additional modular accessories make every game easier to maneuver. Its adjustable palm rest and swappable pinkie rests can fit into every size of hands and accommodate all grip styles. These two sets of pinkie rests enhance the grip friction and prevent you from having discomfort from long hours of play. With the Mad Catz software, you can set up various advanced hotkeys and macros on each of the 14 buttons onto 4 on-board profiles by which every magic spell or melee skill can be mastered in the fight.

R.A.T. DWS is also the first wireless mouse to feature the brand-new Mad Catz DAKOTA™ mechanical switch. Traditionally, a mouse switch is triggered when the spring hits a metallic contact. This mechanism creates a residual bouncing effect that can result in multiple signals. A debounce delay algorithm is required to overcome this. The DAKOTA™ Mechanical Switch adopts a new signal detection technology, enabling an instant response to be made by any of two contact points. This technology precisely processes signal registration and accelerates the switch response time to within only 2 milliseconds – 60% faster than other mechanical switches!

R.A.T. DWS is equipped with dual-mode wireless – 2.4GHz and Bluetooth 5.0 connections. The 2.4GHz wireless mode allows you to get access to a rapid 1ms response, while the low-latency Bluetooth mode can sustain up to 300 hours with only a AA battery, which is engineered to optimize power consumption. The advanced PAW3335DB optical sensor offers a hyper-resolution of 16000 DPI, thereby providing a greater sensitivity that allows for an acute level of precision for victory.

The Mad Catz R.A.T. DWS will be shipping from early February 2021. Availability may vary by region.

The Medium 14 Minutes of Gameplay Video

Bloober Team, the studio behind acclaimed horror games including Blair Witch, Observer: System Redux and Layers of Fear, today debuted an extended look at gameplay from its upcoming psychological horror title The Medium, that showcases the different perspectives, environments and powers players will experience when the game is released on Jan. 28 for Xbox Series X|S and PC.

The 14-minute video sees the titular medium Marianne explore the real and spirit world both alternatively and simultaneously; showcasing the unique split-screen dual reality gameplay system that will see you play in two locations at the same time. Throughout the game, players will be pushed and pulled seamlessly between these two worlds – with about a third of the action taking place in the real world, a third solely in the spirit world and a third in both realms simultaneously.

Marianne is gifted with a number of psychic abilities she must combine to overcome the threats and obstacles of both worlds, such as the protective Spirit Shield and the more potent Spirit Blast. As she uses her powers to untangle the mystery of the Niwa resort, her investigation eventually takes her beyond the walls of the haunted hotel to other locations, including the mysterious Old Fort showcased for the first time in the new gameplay.

The video also gives players a taste of gameplay encounters against The Maw, the main antagonist voiced by Troy Baker, and reveals one of its unique abilities. Deceitful and insatiable, The Maw just like Marianne can travel between the real and the spirit world, thus chasing Marianne across both realities. In the spirit world, The Maw is visible and can easily spot Marianne, while she can defend herself with the Spirit Blast. However, travelling to the material world makes The Maw invisible but also blind, so it relies solely on hearing to locate its prey there.

The Medium is Bloober Team’s largest and most ambitious project to date and players can head to www.themediumgame.com to preorder on Steam, Epic Games Store and the Microsoft Store at the price of $49.99/€49.99/£41.74 with a 10% off discount before launch. Players who preorder via Steam will receive The Medium Original Soundtrack (by Akira Yamaoka and Arkadiusz Reikowski) and The Art of The Medium (digital artbook).

Developed and published by Bloober Team, and rated “M for Mature” by the ESRB and PEGI 18, The Medium will launch on Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store and the Microsoft Store on Jan. 28.

WandaVision Gets A New TV Spot

A new TV spot airs tonight featuring Marvel Studios’ upcoming new Disney+ series “WandaVision,” a blend of classic television and the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The spot reveals an original theme song written by Oscar®-winning songwriters Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez (“Frozen”), who penned unique songs for several episodes, spanning from the 1950s to the early 2000s.

“‘WandaVision’ is such a cool, strange, one-of-a-kind project,” says Lopez. “When the director, Matt Shakman—an old friend from my college days—pitched it to us, we didn’t have to think about it. We loved the bright feeling of American sitcoms mixed with the deep sense of unease the story had, and it was a really inviting challenge to help set that tone.”

Adds Anderson-Lopez, “I grew up in the ’80s watching shows from every decade on the networks all day long. Episodes from ‘I Love Lucy,’ ‘Brady Bunch’ and ‘Family Ties’ shaped who I am and how I move through the world. So this project was a dream come true.”

“WandaVision,” the first Marvel Studios series created exclusively for Disney+, stars Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff, Paul Bettany as Vision, Kathryn Hahn as Agnes, and Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau, who was introduced to audiences in “Captain Marvel.” Kat Dennings will reprise her role as Darcy from “Thor” and “Thor: The Dark World,” and Randall Park will reprise his role as Jimmy Woo from “Ant-Man and The Wasp.”

Marvel Studios’ “WandaVision” is a blend of classic television and the Marvel Cinematic Universe in which Wanda Maximoff and Vision—two super-powered beings living idealized suburban lives—begin to suspect that everything is not as it seems. The series is directed by Matt Shakman with Jac Schaeffer as head writer. Composer is Christophe Beck, and theme (for certain episodes) is by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez. Featuring nine episodes, “WandaVision” kicks off on Disney+ on January 15, 2021.
