Damson Unveils Bone Conducting Headphones Kickstarter

Angry Birds Transformers Announced

Knott’s Berry Farm Mine Ride Re-Launch Preview Event Photos

This past weekend, we were invited out to a special launch event for Knott’s Berry Farm’s newly-renovated Calico Mine Ride. The mine ride opened in 1960 and was the brainchild of veteran ride designer Bud Hurlbut. Hurlbut also designed the train ride which ran at the now-defunct Santa’s Village amusement park as well as the Timber Mountain Log Ride also found at Knott’s Berry Farm. Over the course of time since its launch, the mine ride had slowly been showing its age – with a plethora of effects simply not functioning anymore.

Knott’s Berry Farm teamed up with audio-animatronics and effects creators Garner Holt Productions and worked for six months in updating the ride. Garner Holt Productions has worked on a whole host of attractions – including Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion Holiday and Universal Studios Hollywood’s Jurassic Park ride. The six month process saw updates to all of the mine ride’s effects and animatronics – even adding several new elements to the ride experience.

After getting the chance to ride it, I can safely type that the wait was worth it. Knott’s Berry Farm and Garner Holt have done an outstanding job in making the ride feel new while, at the same time, keeping its original charm. I highly recommend you get over to Buena Park, CA and hit Knott’s Berry Farm. You will not be disappointed.

The Great Horror Campout 2014 Review

This isn’t your typical summer camp.  You won’t be singing songs around the campfire and roasting marshmallows here. As horror enthusiasts and former scare actors, my companion and I are rarely left with an element of surprise at these types of events. Thankfully, the Great Horror Campout has revived the suspense and the excitement of fear for us once more.

Nestled on the backside of the hills that host the famous Hollywood sign, the old LA Zoo was the perfect area to host this haunted event.  The location is very woodsy. So much that you don’t feel like you’re anywhere near Los Angeles. There were moments where we felt that we’d gone off of the path, only to find we were being watched and hunted by beasts!  It was absolutely heart dropping.  My heart is racing just thinking about it.

We attended the event on the opening night of their second season. While relatively remote (by Los Angeles standards), the location was easy to get to and parking was easy to find. The line was buzzing with excitement as new campers met experienced campers who had attended the previous year. Everyone was really careful not to say too much or ruin any surprises. It seems like there’s a social contract to keep things a secret because the thrill of this event is in not knowing and figuring your way through the whole experience. NO SPOILERS! Thus, we won’t be spoiling anything today.

One of the things that makes the Great Horror Campout unique is the Hell Hunt. Scattered around the event are S.C.A.G. (Stuff Campers All Get); items that the campers have to collect. They range from severed tongues to earning a mark on your body and they are all incredibly creepy to come across! Some are hidden in plain sight, others require you to get creative in order to find or earn. Whoever finds all of the S.C.A.G. becomes the Hellmaster and receives extra VIP perks on their future visits. Unfortunately, we underestimated the popularity of the Hell Hunt so while we leisurely climbed the hill looking for a scare, everyone else had run ahead and grabbed up all the S.C.A.G.!! In the entire night, my companion never found a piece of it and I only found three (one of which turned out to be just a torn piece of packing foam – not official S.C.A.G.). It was annoying and frustrating at first but after a couple of hours of searching high and low, we gave up on it entirely. As a couple monster fanatics, we were much more interested in the show elements and scares than the competition so we had an incredible time without taking part.

Another exciting element of the Great Horror Campout is that they make it very clear that the monsters WILL touch you. They will jostle you, move you, pull you, and generally invade all of what used to be your personal space. They are VERY good at it. Hosted by “The Headmaster” and managed by the hillbilly family of Camp Counselors, you will find terrifying monsters in every square foot of the camp grounds. There is no safe place in the event for you to take a break from the terror, not even in your own tent! There is one section of the camp grounds that are designated as a “safe zone”. But who wants to be a pussy? Unfortunately, we were assigned to the “safe zone” tents and we were a bit disappointed that we didn’t get the full experience. I’m sure that they didn’t know that they had a couple of hardcore haunters on their hands!

Horror movies are messy and by the end of the night, you will look like you waded through the most unimaginable filth. The Great Horror Campout drags you kicking and screaming through almost a dozen nightmares and I’ve never had a better time! What we loved was that each area was so unique and would give you an entirely new feeling of fear. Big Creature Country will bring out the primal fear of realizing that you have become prey and the confusing assault at The Dumpsters. There were a wide range of experiences to be immersed in that shocked one’s senses to the limits of what the scare actors think they can get away with! One thing that really impressed us was how they used the existing landscape to their advantage. Each was removed and isolated from anything else so you never got bleed over lights or sounds from other areas (except for the occasional screams in the night).

While being careful to not spoil a single surprise, we have to take a moment to gush about the talent at this event. The scare actors went so far beyond our expectations at every turn. With diverse scare tactics, stunning make up, exquisite costuming, and unrelenting interactions, the scares never stopped with this group. Every kind of bogey man was there and they were ready to bully you if they couldn’t scare you. My companion and I got separated for a couple hours because be both got… redirected. They are not shy about messing with your well laid plans to get all of the S.C.A.G. by putting a bag over your head and dragging you away- seriously!

The great stand out at this event were The Nest and Labyrinth. The Nest is an intensely interactive experience that mixes fun with terror. It’s physically challenging and the spider babes who live there won’t make it easy for you to survive. Labyrinth really blew us away with it’s intense brooding and puzzle solving. You’d be well served to read the dossier provided to make your way though this maze to the incredibly intimidating ending. I wasn’t able to experience The Witches’ Circle because I didn’t have any S.C.A.G. to trade but my companion was able to get in while we were separated (it must be awesome to be a pretty girl). If you have the right items to trade, don’t miss this one. The witches are absolutely sinister. The sweetest of sins and dark deeds will get you a special surprise.

Despite failing to even make a dent in the Hell Hunt, we could not have had a more memorable experience at the Great Horror Campout. This haunted event has made it’s mark in the growing halloween and horror fandom. The talent creates intense interactions that you will remember in your nightmares for ages. There are so many great moments that will stand out in your memory for years. If you want to spend the night trying to survive your own personal horror movie, you MUST attend the Great Horror Campout!!!

Universal Studios Hollywood Transformers Fan Experience and BotCon Announced

Universal Studios Hollywood has announced one kick-ass event for Transformers fans out there. The “Transformers Fan Experience” will take place on June 20, 2014 and feature after-hours access to Transformers: The Ride 3D as well as photo opps, panels with HASBRO’s Transformers brand team, and a whole lot more. Additionally, Universal and HASBRO have sent over word regarding the 2014 “BotCon”, also known as the “Transformers Collectors Convention” which takes place at the Pasadena Convention Center in Pasadena, CA from June 21 to June 22, 2014.

Razer Ships Nabu Dev Units and Special Beta Pricing

LOS ANGELES (E3 2014) – Razer™, the world leader in entertainment devices and software, is now shipping limited units of the Nabu Developer Edition to developers who have qualified for the Nabu Developer Program.

In addition to the Nabu Developer Program, Razer has announced a new Nabu Beta Program which is open to dedicated Razer fans only.

The Razer Nabu is a “smart band” that combines the notification capabilities of a smartwatch with the sensors of an advanced fitness band. Wildstar Review (PC)

Wildstar – or should I just dispense with the formality here and call it by its more accurate title, “World of Warcraft 2”, is a game that clearly does everything NOT to break the mold that World of Warcraft forged back in 2004. Of all the clones we have seen come and, more often than not, go since then, this one should probably take the award for most intentionally attempting to recreate the vanilla WoW experience many of us fondly remember. It should come as no surprise – after all, many of the founders of Carbine Studios worked on vanilla WoW as well.

Wildstar places the players on the fictional planet of Nexus, a planet recently discovered by the two factions players can align with in the game (The Dominion, reminiscent of the Empire from Star Wars, and The Exiles, filling the role of the Rebel Alliance nicely). These factions battle for control of the resource and technology rich planet through traditional PvP and PvE methods. The game is a traditional “Theme Park” when it comes to the linear progression through quest driven zones. Enemies wander in place, as is typical of most games in this genre, and await their fate at the hands of murderous players. Quests are generally creative, and filled with both pop culture references and light humor, taking on a very similar vibe to WoW immediately. As the player levels, they are introduced to many other systems, such as crafting, abilities, AMPs (essentially, a talent grid allowing you to specialize your efforts into different areas). Most of these systems feel tried and true, but a bit more flexible than prior games (all classes are hybrid classes to some extent in this game – with no damage-only classes).

Visually, the game uses a cartoon-like style akin to WoW, but in some ways goes even further with its over-the-top silliness. Emotes are even more outrageous, and animations are smooth yet extremely “bouncy”, with super agile characters that can double jump by default (this is very fun by the way, particularly on mounts). The sound effects and music in the game are quite good, with the occasional audio pop or sync issue, but all-in-all a tight package. I particularly enjoy some of the areas where the music has an almost “Metroid-like” quality to it, and the western music in a zone that reminds me greatly of the Badlands zone from WoW had me grinding in a spaghetti-western trance.

PvP options include Battleground-like maps, Arenas (following the WoW popularized 2v2, 3v3, and 5v5 formats), Dueling, Open-world PvP on select servers, and a new 40 vs. 40 mode at level cap that includes base building prior to the fight. I have yet to participate in PvP outside of my preferred methods, Battlegrounds and Open-world skirmishing over quests, but I will say that the gameplay is very responsive, characters feel very grounded to the world, and overall they pull off an action game in the MMO space quite well (an area where many titles suffer). Typically when I lose a fight in open world PvP, I can point exactly to the cause, as opposed to feeling like lag or sync was the issue (such as “they outnumbered me”, “I failed to avoid that attack”, or “I got agro on some NPCs, which swayed the fight against me”). This is a very good thing, one of the more important facets of gameplay to get right in order for a game in this genre to be successful!

PvE options include quite a lot of quests, events, and challenges that pop up as you move around the play space (similar feeling to Guild Wars 2 of just wandering around and always having things to do if you choose to). Shiphand Missions provide small, single serving solo or group instanced content, and wind up feeling like fun little quests with Rare item rewards. Adventure and Dungeons are 5 player content akin to a traditional instance Dungeon from WoW, though Adventures seem to focus more on choose-your-own-adventure style story and play variance, where Dungeons are the same each time (packs of lesser minions plus boss encounters with Rare loot). I am going to go ahead and say that while I am pretty tired of traditional questing mechanics, I find myself having no issue plodding along grinding content in this title, due to the variance as you travel, and also due to the engaging combat (grinding is actually pretty fun). For me though, the real fun begins after the level 20 mark, when the training wheels come off, and enemies actually begin to get challenging. The dungeon content that opens up at 20 is also quite good and challenging, and random groups do not seem to fare very well in my experience. With a group of friends, these dungeons are extremely fun, with twitch skill and execution of your class being a huge factor for success or failure.

Overall, I get the impression as I climb the level ranks (currently 35 out of 50 cap at the time of this review) that the game will continue to become more difficult (especially fun on PvP servers where you find yourself skirmishing with players of the opposing faction as often as you are completing quests). I can honestly say that fans of this genre will have a good time with this title, but it does start out a bit slow for the first 10-20 levels. Given how closely this title resembles Vanilla WoW, it will be interesting to see what the future holds for it. I believe that it is of high enough quality that many fans of the original gameplay of World of Warcraft will take to this new space setting, and stick around to participate in what is sure to be challenging end game raid content.

This title will not blow your mind with high levels of innovation, but what it takes from other games and from WoW it does exceptionally well, and is a clean and polished experience (not to say it is bug-free, but the bugs that do exist are innocuous and do not break immersion often). This is as close as we have come to a WoW 2 in roughly 10 years since the original, and given that they are aiming for the early WoW experience, and not the more modern expansions, combined with the timing of this release (huge gap in WoW content patches), they may have a shot at sticking around and pulling off a successful game over the coming months and years.
