Valve Reveals SteamVR and More at GDC 2015

steam-logo

March 3, 2015 – Valve announces a number of product and technologies at this week’s Game Developers Conference (GDC) in San Francisco.

“We continue to see very strong growth in PC Gaming, with Steam growing 50% in the last 12 months,” said Gabe Newell, Valve’s president. “With these announcements we hope that we are helping build on that momentum.”

Steam Machines, Windows PCs, Macs, and Linux PCs will be able to take advantage of a new product announced at GDC called Steam Link. Designed to extend your Steam experience to any room in the house, Steam Link allows you to stream all your Steam content from any PC or Steam Machine on the same home network. Supporting 1080p at 60Hz with low latency, Steam Link will be available this November for $49.99, and available with a Steam Controller for an additional $49.99 in the US (worldwide pricing to be released closer to launch).

Steam Machines from partners Alienware and Falcon Northwest are being shown, with Machines from a dozen other partners slated to release this November. Steam Machines will start at the same price point as game consoles, with higher performance. Customers interested in the best possible gaming experience can choose whichever components meet their needs. Epic will give a demonstration of the newly announced Unreal Tournament running on a 4K monitor driven by the Falcon Northwest Steam Machine. “We love this platform,” said Tim Sweeney, founder of Epic Games. “Whether you’re running incredibly detailed scenes at 4K or running 1080p at 120 FPS for an intense shooter experience, this brings world-class gaming and graphics to televisions with an open platform true to Valve’s PC gaming roots.”

Valve will show a virtual reality (VR) headset. Developer versions of the headset will be available this spring, and partner HTC will ship their Vive headset to consumers by the end of the year.

Two new technologies are part of the VR release – a room scale tracking system codenamed Lighthouse, and a VR input system. “In order to have a high quality VR experience, you need high resolution, high speed tracking,” said Valve’s Alan Yates. “Lighthouse gives us the ability to do this for an arbitrary number of targets at a low enough BOM cost that it can be incorporated into TVs, monitors, headsets, input devices, or mobile devices.” Valve intends to make Lighthouse freely available to any hardware manufacturers interested in the technology.

“Now that we have Lighthouse, we have an important piece of the puzzle for tackling VR input devices,” said Valve’s Joe Ludwig. “The work on the Steam Controller gave us the base to build upon, so now we have touch and motion as integrated parts of the PC gaming experience.”

“We’ve been working in VR for years and it was only until we used SteamVR’s controllers and experienced the magic of absolute tracking that we were able to make the VR game we always wanted to make,” said Alex Schwartz of Owlchemylabs.

VR demos being shown at GDC include work from Bossa Studios, Cloudhead Games, Dovetail Games, Fireproof Studios, Google, Owlchemylabs, Skillman & Hackett, Steel Wool Games, Vertigo Games, and Wevr.

Valve announced the Source 2 engine, the successor to the Source engine used in Valve’s games since the launch of Counter-Strike: Source and Half-Life 2. “The value of a platform like the PC is how much it increases the productivity of those who use the platform. With Source 2, our focus is increasing creator productivity. Given how important user generated content is becoming, Source 2 is designed not for just the professional developer, but enabling gamers themselves to participate in the creation and development of their favorite games,” said Valve’s Jay Stelly. “We will be making Source 2 available for free to content developers. This combined with recent announcements by Epic and Unity will help continue the PCs dominance as the premiere content authoring platform.”

Also as part of supporting PC gaming, Valve announced that it will be releasing a Vulkan-compatible version of the Source 2 engine. Vulkan is a cross-platform, cross-vendor 3D graphics API that allows game developers to get the most out of the latest graphics hardware, and ensures hardware developers that there is a consistent, low overhead method of taking advantage of products. Vulkan, previously called Next Generation OpenGL, is administered by the Khronos Group, along with other standards such as OpenCL, OpenGL, and WebGL.

GDC 2015 will mark the 13th anniversary of Valve’s first public announcement of Steam, which has since become the leading platform for PC, Mac, and Linux games and software. In the last year, Steam realized the addition of many new services and features – including In-Home Streaming, Broadcasting, Music, and user-created stores – as it grew to over 125 million active accounts worldwide.

Shadowrun Online Now Shadowrun Chronicles: Boston Lockdown

shadowrun-chronicles-1

Vienna/AUSTRIA, 3rd of March 2015 — After recently announcing their partnership, Nordic Games and Cliffhanger Productions have now fixed an April 28th 2015 launch date for their tactical turn-based RPG Shadowrun Chronicles: Boston Lockdown.

The new name has been in the making for some time and was decided on together with the Shadowrun community and Kickstarter Backers.

Jan Wagner, Managing Director of Cliffhanger, explains: “Shadowrun Online has always been a title that invited a wide range of expectations – some gamers thought it meant we are doing a full-blown MMORPG with a persistent open world, others believed it meant we are doing a free to play browser title. The core vision of the game has always focused on experiencing the world of Shadowrun together with your friends and meeting other players, swapping stories and exchanging strategies as well as a creating a space for actual role-playing with others. This to us is the core experience of Pen and paper roleplaying – a shared imagination and story experience. But a lot of people thought that the title meant they had to play it in multiplayer and didn’t even check it out. The new title also expresses our goal to continue to tell stories and release new content evolving from the collective actions of our players. They will shape the way the future plot of Shadowrun develops, literally making history in the Shadowrun Universe.”

The game offers a campaign, which can be plaid solo or with up to 4 players in co-op as well as a live multiplayer hub and opportunities for PvP matches. Players can also take their offline friend’s characters with them on missions.

Gennaro Giani, Producer & Localization Manager, Nordic Games adds: “Especially for the boxed version, gamers need to be sure they can play the game alone at their convenience and not be forced into some online pattern or depend on any server activity for that matter. The new title also implies that Shadowrun Chronicles is here to stay.”

The April 28th launch date for Shadowrun Chronicles will see the game being released in English, French and German, as well as in retail stores and on various digital platforms.

Knights of Pen & Paper 2 Release Date and Trailer

kopp2_screen_9

STOCKHOLM — March 2, 2015 Paradox Interactive, a publisher and developer with plenty of initiative, today announced the forthcoming release of Knights of Pen & Paper 2, coming to PC, iOS, and Android devices. Knights of Pen & Paper 2, the appropriately named sequel to Knights of Pen & Paper +1 Edition, will bring players back to the table, where they can sit and simulate another, different table inside the game (which is about a game). Danger, intrigue, death, role-playing, and roll-playing will return when Knights of Pen & Paper 2 arrives on May 14th.

Use the under-appreciated Appraise skill on this trailer:

Return to the dicey world of Knights of Pen & Paper for a new turn-based adventure, where players get to take on the role of players, and also of the game’s encounter-designing, rules-laywering GM in a fully customizable party. Assemble a group of virtual friends, dress them in class-specific hats, and take on an all-new series of quests, including dynamic dungeons, an improved combat system, new loot and crafting mechanics, and more, as the party faces its greatest challenge yet: the new edition of the ruleset.

Knights of Pen & Paper 2 rolls with the following features:

•    +2 to Impress: The retro adventure makes the leap from simulated 8-bit graphics to simulated 16-bit graphics, providing players with twice the bits
•    New Racial Feats: Customize your party members by choosing players such as the Goth or the Rocker, classes such as Wizard or Thief, and for the first time, races such as Dwarves and Elves
•    A Game of Throws: Face the whims of the d20 in an overhauled combat system, new crafting and loot, dynamically generated dungeons, and a variety of nail-biting saving throws
•    Entirely Too Many Gaming and Pop Culture Jokes: Seriously

“When you allow people at your company to dress up in wizard robes and suits of armor, sometimes you wind up with games like Knights of Pen & Paper 2,” said Fredrik Wester, CEO of Paradox Interactive. “We’re going to be showing off the game in person this week at GDC. I wanted to reveal it during the DICE conference, but nobody agreed with me.”

Heroes & Generals Soviet Forces Update Trailer

heroes-and-generals-SU-85-Wreckage-1920px

COPENHAGEN – (March 2, 2015) – The Soviets are coming… Reto-Moto, the independent developer behind the popular Heroes & Generals online PC game, today revealed that its largest ever update forHeroes & Generals is now live on Steam, bringing players a third faction—the highly anticipated Soviets—alongside a host of new gear, playable characters, maps and gameplay improvements. As shown in today’s new trailer, the update adds a whopping 1,000 new European battlefields, 14 new vehicles and planes and over a dozen new weapons to support the entry of the Soviet Union faction.

The Soviets join the existing US and German factions in the free-to-play Massively Online FPS where each of the factions fight to control the game’s huge WWII-era European theatre of war. Heroes & Generals players can choose to play as action Hero characters, fighting as infantry and snipers or manning planes and tanks, or as strategic Generals, who oversee war efforts by managing battlefield assets, units and reinforcements.

“Our community has been eagerly awaiting the arrival of the Soviet faction, and this update transforms Heroes & Generals with far more than new characters, equipment and battlefields,” said Jacob Andersen, Game Director at Reto-Moto. “The gameplay dynamics are enriched for both the Heroes on the battlefields and the strategic management of the Generals—with three separate factions each comprised of thousands of players fighting across Europe it’s a war on a whole new scale!”

The Soviet update, codenamed ‘Timoshenko’ after renowned Soviet commander Semyon Timoshenko, brings Soviet Infantrymen, Tankers, Fighter Pilots, Paratroopers and Recon playable characters to the game. Battles can now have soldiers, vehicles and planes from all three factions fighting over the same objectives. The Soviets don’t come to the battlefield empty-handed—with firepower such as the T-34 85 Model 1944 tank, the Yakovlev Yak-9D fighter plane, the PPSh-41 submachine gun and much more, the Red Army is well equipped.

In addition to tons of upgradeable gear, there are many changes to refine the gameplay experience. New weapon upgrades and ammunition are available to all factions, all weapons are re-balanced, more uniform variations are available, and deeper strategy mechanics for Generals include new retreat options and Skirmish battles instantiated on supply lines instead of access points. New war victory conditions to support three factions have also been introduced. For the full list of equipment and gameplay changes, please visit the official Reto-Moto changelog.

Currently in Open Beta, Heroes & Generals has been progressing toward launch since it was released on Steam Early Access in July 2014. More than four million players have installed H&G on Steam and it’s currently one of the 10 most popular free-to-play games on Steam.

Developed in the years immediately following World War II, the MiG-15bis was a first-generation jet fighter designed by the Mikoyan-Gurevich design bureau of the Soviet Union. The MiG-15bis is a single engine, swept-wing jet that saw over 15,000 copies produced. The MiG-15 gained fame in the skies over Korea where it battled the F-86 Sabre and other allied aircraft. It proved an excellent match to the Sabre, and it often came down to the skill of the pilot that determined who made it home and who was left dangling from a parachute. Having an excellent thrust-to-weight ratio and good climbing characteristics, the MiG-15bis was also armed with two NR-23 23mm cannons and a single, powerful N-37 37mm cannon. Not surprisingly, it is considered by many as one of the deadliest fighters of the era.

Key Features of the DCS: MiG-15bis:

• Unmatched flight physics that allow you to truly feel what it’s like to fly this legend of the USSR.
• Highly detailed, six-degrees-of-freedom (6 DOF) cockpit.
• Interact with cockpit controls with your mouse.
• Accurate MiG-15bis model, country markings, and weapons.
• Detailed modelling the MiG-15bis instruments, weapons, engine, radios, fuel, and electrical systems.
• Battle DCS: F-86F Sabre’s in single and multiplayer games.
