Square Enix and Junpdrive Studios Announce XO Kickstarter

xo-square-enix-kickstarter

LONDON, PORTLAND, July 21, 2015: Humanity is on the brink of extinction, under threat from an enemy possessed of overwhelming force, and time is running out. Only you, a lone starship captain, has a chance to save the remnants of civilization and escape to safety – but how will you choose who to save, or when to fight?

That’s the starting point for XO, a stylish and deep new space-based strategy game designed by Portland, Oregon-based Jumpdrive Studios – influenced by legendary sci-fi experiences includingBattlestar Galactica, The Lost Fleet and FTL.

The project launched on Kickstarter on Monday, July 20 seeking an initial total of $40,000 to complete development, and is the latest campaign to be supported by Square Enix Collective. The last five projects supported by the initiative have all been successful, with developers raising over USD 600,000 in the process.

With an immediately recognizable visual style and a soundtrack provided by the incredible Jim Guthrie(Sword and Sworcery, Indie Game: The Movie), we’re pretty sure that indie gamers the world over will like what they’re seeing.

“We’ve received a tremendous amount of support from the indie community so far,” said Corey Warning of Jumpdrive Studios. “I think we initially struck a chord with the game’s visual style, and once we started diving into the political system, people started to get really excited. We’ve teamed up with one of my favorite composers Jim Guthrie – who I very much admire.  His work on Sword & Sworcery and Indie Game: The Movie is what inspired me to start making games with my friends in the first place, which set me on my path into the games industry.”

The Jumpdrive Studios team (like all developers supported through crowdfunding by Square Enix), passed the Collective Team Assessment process last week; this means that we have examined the capabilities of the team and believe they possess the expertise and tools needed to create the game they are describing.

Square Enix Collective is a platform that aims to help independent developers find an audience for their projects, by enabling them to tap into our community and media resources. Projects which gamers support through the initial Feedback phase may be offered continued support through crowdfunding too; but developers are free to choose whether to accept, and always retain IP and complete creative control over their projects.

Smith & Wesson Licensed M&P 9 Full Size Airsoft GBB Pistol by VFC Review

VFC Cybergun Smith and Wesson M&P 9 airsoft pistol

The resemblance of the Smith & Wesson licensed M&P 9 full size airsoft gas blowback pistol by VFC to its real steel counterpart is incredible. Aside from the orange tip, one would be hard-pressed to tell the difference between the two in a side by side comparison. Much like the real Smith & Wesson M&P, the airsoft version features a full metal slide attached to a polymer frame, a 20mm accessory rail underneath the muzzle,  and an ambidextrous slide release level. Of course, while the airsoft version of the pistol doesn’t use actual ammunition cartridges, it still includes the small opening in the top of the slide for the operator to see if there is a cartridge in the chamber. Additionally, the magazine release can be switched around either side of the gun depending on if the operator is right or left-handed. Overall, the external quality is what you would expect from VFC – that is to say, very good. So good, in fact, that it should fit in your real steel S&W M&P holsters! How does it shoot though?

Functionally, the VFC/Cybergun S&W M&P 9 works like a champ. It shoots around 300 FPS with .20g BBs and its hop-up unit is adjustable – but you have to remove the slide to access and adjust it. My advice is to adjust it for the distance you are looking to shoot prior to getting into a game. That way, you can make your aiming adjustments accordingly once you do get into an airsoft skirmish with it. Reloading is smooth and there is enough room for the magazine in the well that it slides out without fuss – but not so much that wobbles around. The takedown lever on the model we looked at didn’t rotate very smoothly and needed to be muscled a bit once the slide was in the proper position for its usage. I would imagine this will loosen up with extended use.

Quick Overview from our friends at AirsoftMegastore

The pistol comes with three backstraps of various thickness and switching them out is very easy thanks to the locking mechanism. On the real Smith & Wesson M&P pistol, it is the takedown tool, located inside the pistol grip. On the airsoft version, you twist it and pull it out – then your backstrap is unlocked and easily removed. Once a new backstrap is put in place and the lock reinserted, the backstrap is solidly in place and doesn’t feel wobbly or loose at all. Speaking of magazines, each holds 24 rounds and one of the magazines is included in the box. Additional magazines retail for about $40 dollars, which, while pricey, is in keeping with most high-end gas blowback pistols on the market.

Something that should be noted about the Smith & Wesson M&P 9 gas blowback pistol is that it has the ability to shoot in either semi-automatic or FULLY automatic modes! If you pull back the slide, you will find a fire select toggle on its underside (on the bottom of the part that covers the dovetail). Fully automatic fire is a lot of fun with this pistol but, be warned as you will run through your BBs very quickly.

[ezcol_1half]The Good

  • Excellent reproduction of the real steel Smith & Wesson M&P pistol
  • Smooth action
  • Ability to shoot in full-auto mode
  • Fun recoil

[/ezcol_1half] [ezcol_1half_end]The Bad

  • Takedown lever can be fussy

[/ezcol_1half_end]

Overall, the VFC/Cybergun Smith & Wesson M&P 9 airsoft gas blowback pistol is a great airsoft pistol with very respectable accuracy and such realistic function that you could even use it to train muscle memory when unable to take your real steel M&P to the range. This airsoft gas blowback pistol retails for $149.99 and is available now at most airsoft retailers. We’d like to thank Cybergun and Palco Sports for helping us make this review possible.

Warhammer 40,000: Inquisitor – Martyr Teaser Trailer

Warhammer 40,000: Inquisitor – Martyr Promo Image

Warhammer 40,000: Inquisitor – Martyr Promo Image

Budapest, Hungary – July 16, 2015  Veteran video game developer NeocoreGames (The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing trilogy, King Arthur) is proud to announce today a totally new action-RPG, Warhammer 40,000: Inquisitor – Martyr, produced in close collaboration with Games Workshop, developers and publishers of the well-known Warhammer 40,000 tabletop game and universe.

Warhammer 40,000: Inquisitor – Martyr is an action-RPG that not only evokes the dystopian world of the dark and violent 41st millennium, but also becomes the next milestone in the evolution of action-RPGs.

Building on the experience gained from The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing action-RPG trilogy, NeocoreGames aims to expand the boundaries of the genre itself by taking the in-game mechanics and visual solutions to a brand new level and also by opening up a persistent sandbox action-RPG.

The single-player campaign pitches players into a grim and secret war among the stars as the agents of the ever-vigilant Inquisition. After the end of the campaign the story continues in a colossal sandbox game set in the same secluded sector of this vast universe. This persistent setting grants years of constant entertainment, gradual development and a continuous flow of content that enriches the action-RPG gameplay.

Coming to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Mac in 2016, Warhammer 40,000: Inquisitor – Martyr will be a monumental, brutal, and grim experience, undeniably true to the spirit of the Warhammer 40,000 universe.

“There’s a reason why we chose the world of Warhammer 40,000: it’s intense, brutal, visceral – a perfect material for an action RPG,” said Zoltán ‘Pozs’ Pozsonyi, Producer, NeocoreGames. “Working with Games Workshop, we’re doing our best to bring a high quality game to the community. We’re huge fans as well, so we care deeply about this game.”

“A Warhammer 40,000 action RPG has been notably absent from our portfolio of video game licenses so far and it’s great to finally be able to talk publicly about this wonderful game that the guys at Neocore have been working so hard on for some time now,” said Jon Gillard, Head of Licensing, Games Workshop. “Their previous action RPGs are very impressive and we feel privileged to be partnering with them on this game.”
