Obutto has long been known for their “oZone” gaming cockpit (here is our review). Being the hardcore sim geek that I am, when I learned that they had released a follow-up to the oZone, I had to check it out. That follow-up is on the market as the “R3volution” gaming cockpit. Featuring a similar carbon steel frame, wicked design sensibility, and high functionality, the R3volution is truly a worthy successor to the oZone. It is clear that the company put some serious work in taking their gaming cockpit design to the next level. Read on to find out why this wicked home gaming cockpit is the one to get. Read More

Looks like we have more bad news for lots of people working in the video game industry today as, according to an article at Polygon, Electronic Arts has begun laying off an unspecified number of staff at EA Los Angeles and EA Montreal. The news of these layoffs is timed with a statement by EA president of labels, Frank Gibeau. The statement is very carefully-worded to make what is essentially laying off a bunch of people sound like a great part of their “console transition” with yesterday’s PlayStation 4 announcement. Gibeau does mention that those laid off will be given severance packages – so, hopefully that will help them get to their next career destination. We wish all those affected the best of luck.
EA responded to requests for comment with this statement:
“Today EA internally announced some adjustments to select development teams to align staff and skills against priority growth areas, including new technologies and mobile. Many employees are being retrained for new positions; however a small number will be released. These are great, talented people and we wish them well. EA is growing globally, and we expect our headcount to increase this year.
EA Montreal is a key development studio where our long-term plan is to sharpen our teams’ focus on console and mobile games.”
Marseille, France – February 21st 2013 – Smartphones are becoming more and more powerful but also tending to increase in size. It can be an inconvenience to regularly check the constant flow of notifications received. The Bluetooth watch VEABuddy displays all the most important notifications of the connected smartphone without the user needing to take out the smartphone and look at it. The watch is compatible with all smartphones, tablets, and operating systems on the market as only Bluetooth technology is required to connect the two accessories.
The VEABuddy Watch presents a 2” wide color touchscreen with ultra high contrast to provide perfect reading conditions even in full sun. All the internal components have been thoroughly selected to be integrated in a unique design specially created by Caiman Design. The watch is ultra thin at only 8 mm thick. It doesn’t require a special charger as the bracelet of the watch incorporates a male USB connector for flexible charging.
All the most important notifications can be displayed on the watch: calls, emails, SMS and MMS messages, Tweets, Facebook notifications and navigation updates. It can handle incoming calls (accept or reject) or outbound calls (initiate) and can control the music player. In fact, as long as the user does not need the big screen of the smartphone, it can remain in a pocket and key interactions occur via the VEABuddy. As this information is presented directly to the user’s wrist, they’ll never miss an important notice again. VEA Digital submitted the project to crowdfounding and is anticipating a warm welcome.

Looks like the new owner of IGN Entertainment, Ziff Davis, is shutting down long-time gaming websites, 1UP, UGO, and GameSpy. According to a news post at Polygon, the company has also laid off a number of staff members over at IGN. The Editor-in-Chief over at UGO, Chris Radtke, has even posted up a goodbye letter to their readers. It is a sad day for gaming journalism and we hope all those affected get picked up by other outlets soon.
Internal Memo from Ziff Davis CEO, Vivek Shah
Today, we took some difficult but important actions that will ensure the continued growth and health of IGN and AskMen. Before I go into more details about the changes, you should know that they resulted in the elimination of jobs at IGN. It’s always upsetting to say goodbye to colleagues and let’s do what we can to help these employees as they seek new opportunities.
It’s also important for you to know that we are absolutely confident that we now have the best structure and team to successfully move the company forward and that there are no further planned reductions.
The changes we made today are designed to allow us to Simplify and Focus. Our goal is to do fewer things and to do them exceptionally well. In that vein, we want to direct all of our energy and work behind our two flagship brands: IGN and AskMen. They are both category killers and share a vision of a multi-screen (PCs, tablets, smartphones, TV) and multi-format (text, photos and video) world.
As a result of our decision to focus on our core brands, we are:
- Winding down 1UP.com, UGO.com and GameSpy.com;
- No longer ad repping 3rd party sites such as GameStop.com and FamilyGuy.com;
- Actively engaged with parties interested in acquiring IPL. IGN’s role going forward will be to broadcast and cover a variety of eSports events;
- Dividing our ad sales team into two: one focused on IGN and the other focused on AskMen.
On the IGN front, Peer Schneider will continue to oversee all of editorial and product, focusing those resources exclusively on IGN. The foundation of this entire company is its content and we will continue to have the best people in the industry producing it.
Charlie Barrett will oversee the monetization of IGN everywhere in the U.S. – PCs, tablets, smartphones, YouTube, consoles – and now be able to concentrate the sales and ad ops teams’ efforts where they can make the most impact.
Frank Puma will assume an exciting new role as executive director of programs and solutions, reporting to Charlie. The sales development, design and creative teams will report to Frank, whose charge is to deliver world-class advertising experiences.
A new head of engineering and technology for IGN will be recruited as quickly as possible. Tech has a monumental role to play in the growth of IGN and will be committed to working hand-in-glove with edit, product and sales.
On the AskMen front, Ric Poupada will continue to oversee all aspects of the AskMen organization and is excited to have a new VP of sales, Paul Chenier, reporting to him. Paul has been a longtime advocate of the AskMen brand and is one of the most talented sales executives in our organization. Having him build a dedicated AskMen ad sales team will do wonders for the business.
Ian Chambers will continue to run International out of the UK for both IGN and AskMen and we’re thrilled with the performance of our businesses overseas.
Mike Etheridge will be the VP of finance and operations for IGN and AskMen, working across all of the departments to ensure that we’re growing our business, expanding our margins and making metric-based decisions.
Rachelle Igoe will be the head of human resources for IGN and AskMen, ensuring that we continue to nurture, attract and retain the best talent in the industry.
I’m sure that there will be a number of questions in the days and weeks ahead but please know that we will be a better functioning and nimbler organization from this moment forward.

Bohemia Interactive has revealed that their upcoming Arma 3 will be a Steam-exclusive title, meaning it will require connection to the Steam servers to play. According to the development house, this has made it possible to release the game in 2013 – otherwise, they would be looking at a later release window. The studio had some recent troubles as two of its developers were arrested and, after a lengthy-detention, released on charges of espionage.

Official Press Announcement
Prague, Czech Republic, Thursday 21 February 2013 – Ahead of their release plans announcement, Bohemia Interactive has revealed that Valve’s Steam will be required to play Arma 3. In a developer’s blog post, Project Lead Joris-Jan van ‘t Land explains the studio’s motivations, stating that the game could otherwise not be released in 2013.
The “Full Steam Ahead” blog post mentions a difficult phase in development, which also involved the recent incident in Greece. These setbacks drove the studio to re-evaluate the project, and Joris-Jan van ‘t Land refers to the decision for Steam as one of the steps to set Arma 3 back on track for a 2013 release.
“As an independent developer, we’re constantly evaluating the way we develop, distribute and publish games. Valve made tremendous improvements to their system, which made the installation/update process much more user-friendly – for both developers and customers“ , adds Bohemia Interactive’s founder and CEO, Marek Španěl.
“We realize that some people may find it difficult to migrate to a new platform, especially if they were used to purchasing and playing our games without any external third-party application. We have evaluated the pros and cons, but in the end Steam enables us to release Arma 3, brings massive advantages to the game, and improves the end-user experience. Not to forget, the majority of our players already come from Steam.“
Bohemia Interactive is also exploring the further integration of Steamworks functionality, which would enable game features that are impossible to develop in-house, on time. Joris-Jan van ‘t Land: “Valve’s Steamworks offers some cool features that can help us to enhance the Arma experience where it matters. We’ll save the exact details for a later update, but to summarize our priorities in two key words: user-generated content and multiplayer.”
