League of War: VR Arena Announced

August 15, 2017 – MunkyFun, a San Francisco-based independent game developer, today revealed it is bringing its highly successful League of War strategy game franchise to PlayStation®VR exclusively with the new arena-based arcade war game, League of War: VR Arena. In the action-oriented strategy game built from the ground up to create a powerful VR experience, players will fight short, intense battles against human or AI opponents, vying to lead their side to victory by physically placing and aiming units on the arena battlefield to destroy the opposing army’s towers and base.

In League of War: VR Arena, each army has 12 units including tanks, flamethrowers, helicopters and commanders, of which four are randomly available at any one time. Each unit requires energy to deploy, with more powerful units requiring more energy and taking longer to charge up. Using Move controllers, players will directly place and aim their units at the opponent—with the opponent doing the same in real time—as if they were a giant-sized general overseeing a virtual battlefield. The winner is the first player to destroy the opposing base to claim victory.

“League of War: VR Arena is designed to be a powerful experience that puts players in charge of a high tech, aggressive army on a living, tabletop-style battlefield,” said Nick Pavis, CEO and Co-Founder of MunkyFun, Inc.

“As you throw your units into battle, strategically choosing between quick strikes and slower but more powerful units, your opponent does the same, creating a pulse-pounding mix of strategy and action that is highly engaging on PlayStation VR.”

The game features both a single player Campaign mode and an Arcade mode where players face off head-to-head via the game’s Social Screen interface and build their own custom armies. Controls are highly intuitive and direct with the PS VR hardware—grab a unit and throw it on the battlefield! The pace is quick, and action is intense and the fun only stops to give you a chance to catch your breath before the next battle. Regardless of whether the opponent is human or silicon-based, the game thrives on a simple to play, difficult to master mantra. Should you wait for a powerful tank to charge, or immediately attack with an inexpensive recon unit that can distract the enemy while you prepare your big move? Should you deploy a helicopter to attack infantry, or wait to pair it with artillery for a more effective combo attack? These are the choices desktop generals will make in League of War: VR Arena!

Developed and published by MunkyFun, League of War: VR Arena will be exclusively released for PlayStation®VR early this fall, with more details revealed in the near future. This game has been rated “T for Teen” by the ESRB.

Creative Labs Sound Blaster AE-5 Sound Card Review

Creative Labs has released their latest generation of internal sound card, the Sound Blaster AE-5. Connecting to your computer via PCIe slot, the Sound Blaster AE-5 represents the sum total of sound card experience garnered by Creative Labs since their first sound card was released in 1987.

The Creative Labs Sound Blaster AE-5 sound card installs as one would expect. You insert the card into an available PCIe slot on your motherboard and screw it in place. The biggest change in the installation procedure for the AE-5 is completely optional, but really cool. The Sound Blaster AE-5 comes with a small LED light strip. This light strip connects to your sound card and then you plug one of your computer’s molex power cables a connector on the card itself. This LED light strip teams up with the RGB lighting on the sound card itself in what Creative Labs is calling the Aurora Reactive Lighting System. This lighting system displays 16.8 million colors and can be set to change or react when specific events occur. The small LED light strip has a magnetic backing that allows you to place it wherever you prefer within your PC case. After the hardware stuff is taken care of, you simply download the software from Creative Labs website and off you go. Overall, the installation process is pretty simple.

Once your software is installed, it’s time to start playing some games or listening to music. I am happy to report that the Sound Blaster AE-5 is one stout audio performer, capable of sending out some great music or game sounds for your listening enjoyment. It can do this because of several technological features that Creative Labs has built into the card.

The first technical feature of note on the Sound Blaster AE-5 is its Xamp discrete headphone amplifier. This Xamp is pretty cool in that, unlike many sound card headphone amps, it individually amplifies both left and right channels, allows for great sound on high-end headphones that are capable of up to 600ohm. Now THAT’s “HiFi”! Unfortunately, we do not have a set of hifi headphones to try this feature out on. But, it sounds really cool!

If you don’t care about headphone amplification, you might like to know about its DAC unit. The Sound Blaster AE-5 features a SABER32 Ultra Class DAC (digital audio controller). This DAC is touted as delivering up to 32-bit, 384kHz playback with 122dB DNR. I ran through a number of games with the AE-5: Fallout 4, Divinity: Original Sin II, EVE Online, and many more. I was satisfied with the sound of every game I played and I can attest to both the clarity and power of the audio produced. The AE-5 also allows for very convincing virtual 7.1 channel surround sound, so if you prefer your computer gaming with that kind of sound scape, the AE-5 will make it happen. I was also very happy with its performance while listening to music albums from my iTunes library. Metallica, Alanis Morissette, and even Weird Al Yankovich. I have a lot of albums from a variety of musical genres in my playlist. The AE-5 ran through them all perfectly. I would recommend switching over to the “Concert” EQ setting in the Sound Blaster software for music listening.

The Sound Blaster Connect 2 software suite used to configure the Sound Blaster AE-5 can also be used to control and configure your other new Creative Labs peripherals. I love that this software functions as a central hub for controlling your Creative devices and it makes some really great sense on their part to make it function this way. Going further into the software behind the AE-5 is what Creative Labs calls “Scout 2.0”. Scout 2.0 allows you to visualize the direction a sound is coming from in your favorite first-person shooter title by way of a special utility. If you are featuring your AE-5 on a computer being used in a tournament, please make sure they allow the Scout 2.0 utility before playing. Gotta follow the rules! A final note on the software is that its EQ settings are pretty fantastic. It has a ton of presets for a huge game library. Don’t agree with the preset? Feel free to adjust it! The sound profile is pretty flexible.

So, now for the not-so-great news. While the Sound Blaster AE-5 does allow for discrete 5.1 channel surround sound, it does not support onboard Dolby Digital decoding. So, if you are purchasing this for a home theater setup, you might make sure you don’t require Dolby Digital features prior to purchase or have an optical cable to pass the sound into a decoder of your own. If you don’t need Dolby Digital, I can safely say you will love the Sound Blaster AE-5. For a long while I had gone with just using discrete sound on my motherboard for audio output. After listening to my games and movies on the AE-5, I’m never going back.

For a very affordable $149.99, you can purchase the Creative Labs Sound Blaster AE-5 today from online retailers like Amazon and Newegg. Of course, you can also purchase it directly through Creative Labs on their official website.

The Monster Project Release Info

August 14, 2017 – In a chilling and inventive take on the classic monster movie genre, THE MONSTER PROJECT follows a group of aspiring horror filmmakers, eager to raise their YouTube subscriber count, who post an online casting call for “real life” monsters to interview for their documentary. They find three participants and choose to film them sharing their haunted experiences in a mansion in the woods on the night of a lunar eclipse. The production suddenly turns into a nightmare when the participants transform into a real vampire, demon, and skinwalker (a type of harmful witch, according to Navajo legends, that can transform into any animal with the intent of harming people), forcing the unsuspecting crew to fight for their lives.

The film was directed by Victor Mathieu and written by Mathieu, Shariya Lynn, and Corbin Billings. Toby Hemingway (“BLACK SWAN”, “IN TIME”), Justin Bruening (“GOOD BEHAVIOR”, “GREY’S ANATOMY”, “RINGER”), and Yvonne Zima (“IRON MAN 3”, “NICE GUYS”) provide strong performances with Jamal Quezaire and Murielle Zuker rounding out the cast.

THE MONSTER PROJECT is distributed by Epic Pictures.

Established in 2007 by Patrick Ewald and Shaked Berenson, Epic Pictures Group has grown to become one of the most creative and dynamic independent studios, focusing on filmmakers’ vision driven projects, shaping them from script to launch via its domestic distribution division Epic Pictures Releasing. Throughout the past 10 years, Epic produced many genre cult hits including the 2015 Sundance premieres “ENTERTAINMENT” and “TURBO KID” and all-star horror anthology “TALES OF HALLOWEEN”. More recently Epic produced the psychological horror “THE LODGERS,” sci-fi thriller “RADIUS,” action horror “REDCON-1,” and the adventure thriller “THE MAN WHO KILLED HITLER AND THEN THE BIGFOOT” starring Sam Elliott.

Hangry Bunnies From Mars Release Date

LOS ANGELES (August 14, 2017) — Studio229 has announced its first VR game titled Hangry Bunnies From Mars for the HTC Vive, available August 23 on Steam.

Watch the announcement trailer:

Who loves being eaten to death by bunnies? (No one.) Especially not hundreds of them. Which is why the not-so-subtly-named extermination company Critter Death Squad is using you as its latest Exterminator to single-handedly hold off this hangry horde. Never mind the fact that you’re an extremely expendable clone (and they’ll just grow a new one if you die), because what really matters is the fact that you’re equipped with some seriously awesome transforming weapons that excel at unleashing critter death.

In Hangry Bunnies From Mars, you’ll take on hundreds of fluffy-wuffy bunnies at once in this replayable arcade adventure. You’ll suit up using some ridiculous weapons to take on these voracious varmints, all the while enjoying hilarious running commentary from Colin the British engineer and Vlad the Russian tactician. Featuring a script written by a Hollywood team–including Jeremy Adams, writer and producer for Lego, DC Comics, Monsuno and more. Hangry Bunnies features a dynamic difficulty adjuster that keeps gameplay consistent regardless of VR expertise, making it a great experience for beginners and skilled shooters alike. You’ll literally have a blast defending the great city of New Los Angeles, all rendered with a vibrant art style in roomscale VR!

The game launches on August 23 for the HTC Vive with Oculus Touch support releasing shortly afterwards. Check out the website for more info (and the epic trailer!) at www.hangrybunnies.com.

Razer Thresher Ultimate for Xbox One Headset Review

During my visit to Razer’s E3 2017 suite, I got the chance to check out the new Thresher Ultimate wireless gaming surround sound headset. Playing the latest Capcom fighter on the PlayStation 4, I was very impressed with the clarity and rich sound the headphones provided. Flash forward to last week, and a box arrives at my door from Razer with the PC/Xbox One version of their Thresher Ultimate. So, I started the review process. I pulled everything out of the box and began inspecting it. The first thing I noticed about the Thresher Ultimate was that it is built rugged. Even though the headband and ear pads are made from super-soft material and designed for comfort, the structure and body of the Thresher Ultimate feels solid. Even the plastic parts on the Thresher Ultimate are dense and feel like they would withstand a fair amount of abuse.

The Razer Thresher Ultimate wireless surround gaming headset is capable of provided wireless sound either for your Xbox One game console or PC gaming rig. It accomplishes this via a sliding toggle switch that changes the inputs. But not so fast, on the back of the Thresher Ultimate base unit, you will find optical in and out ports, a mini-USB port, and a standard USB port. The audio inputs from your game console go through the optical in port on the base unit, but your PC connects to the base station by way of its mini-USB port. The extra full-sized USB port on the base unit is used for charging the Thresher Ultimate headphones. Razer has also included a nifty headphone stand which attaches to the Thresher Ultimate base unit, providing gamers with a sturdy and convenient place to rest their headphones when not in use. The front of the Thresher Ultimate base unit features a power button and that’s it. The design of the base unit is really attractive and it doesn’t cloud its surface with tons of buttons and controls.

The Razer Thresher Ultimate wireless surround gaming headset proper is also a sight to behold. Featuring some very well-designed lines and hefty build quality that, while not being so heavy as to weigh your head down, is strong enough to feel worth its price point. On the left ear cup of the Thresher Ultimate headset, you will find the retractable boom microphone, headset volume dial, mini-USB charging port, and power button. On the right ear cup, you’ll find the chat volume/mute dial (this doesn’t do much in PC mode, but is super helpful in Xbox One mode). The headphones feature a soft head band as well as an aluminum frame that hovers over the soft band and takes up a lot of the weight from the unit. I was able to wear the Thresher Ultimate for many hours of play without discomfort. Also helping this were the super-soft, memory foam ear pads that Razer has included on the Thresher Ultimate. These pads even have a “temple indent” which allows for more comfortable wear of glasses while playing.

I spent many hours of gaming while wearing the Razer Thresher Ultimate headphones, trying to split my time equally between Xbox One and PC game experiences. On the Xbox One, I delved into the post-apocalyptic universe of Fallout 4 as well as the zombie-killing, base-building opus known as Fortnite. Both of these yielded premium audio experiences, especially when I depressed the Dolby button on the top of the Thresher Ultimate base unit. This button enables the Dolby surround sound on the headphones, and ups the “Wow!” factor of the Thresher Ultimate even more. On my PC, I played some Total War: Warhammer, TES V: Skyrim, and Dead by Daylight. The Razer Thresher never disappointed me. I have even been using the headphones as a monitor and microphone for streaming game content on our YouTube channel, GamingShogunTV. The audio quality of the Razer Thresher Ultimate headphones is excellent, with some really crisp sound and a respectable amount of base thanks to the 50mm drivers built into the headphones.

Overall, the Razer Thresher Ultimate wireless surround gaming headset is a truly great way to enjoy the audio of your favorite Xbox One or PC games. It is well-built and puts out some seriously-crisp sound, all while being extremely comfortable to wear for hours on end. You can find the Razer Thresher Ultimate in two flavors: Xbox One/PC and PlayStation 4/PC, both of which are available starting on August 15, 2017 for $249.99.

BATTLETECH Release Date Moved to Early 2018

STOCKHOLM – Aug. 14, 2017 – Paradox Interactive and Harebrained Schemes today announced that the release of BATTLETECH has been moved to early 2018. Initially planned for release later this year, the move will give the Harebrained Schemes team the time they need to deliver the type of quality experience the company is known for.

“Throughout development our Backers have been clear: ‘Don’t rush it, just make it great.’ and we have taken that advice to heart,” said Jordan Weisman, CEO of Harebrained Schemes and creator of the original board game and BattleTech universe. “HBS, Paradox, and our Backers all share a deeply personal attachment to this project and we are committed to delivering a game that not only meets the high expectations of our Backers and fans but introduces BattleTech to a new generation of players.”

“The feedback and enthusiasm from Beta participants has shown us just how great BATTLETECH can be, and rushing development to fit a timeline would be a disservice,” said Fredrik Wester, CEO of Paradox Interactive. “We believe in the Harebrained Schemes team, and want them to give the game the time and attention they need to create a turn-based game worthy of the name.”

To help eager MechCommanders pass the time, Harebrained Schemes is again updating their Backer Beta this week to include a large number of improvements including gameplay changes, AI upgrades, balance changes, and interface enhancements based upon the reams of useful feedback they’ve received from their community. A subsequent update coming soon will also allow Backers to go head-to-head in PvP multiplayer allowing them to test their skills against human opponents. The Beta will last at least another month, so players interested in becoming Late Backers to gain access to the Beta should go to http://battletechgame.com/ to get in on the action.
