GDC 2018 Dates Revealed

SAN FRANCISCO – March 13, 2017 – The 2017 Game Developers Conference (GDC), the world’s largest and longest-running event serving professionals dedicated to the art and science of making games, concluded a successful week of networking, learning and inspiration. In total, last week’s conference hosted more than 26,000 professional attendees, 500 lectures, panels, tutorials and roundtable discussions, and 570 companies exhibiting in San Francisco’s Moscone Center. GDC 2017 marked a return of the Virtual Reality Developers Conference, which debuted at GDC 2016. That event, which runs concurrent to GDC, again fostered key learnings and insights into the flourishing field of virtual and augmented reality. GDC and VRDC will be returning to the Moscone Center in San Francisco from Monday, March 19 to Friday, March 23, 2018. Call for submissions for both GDC and VRDC open this summer.

This year, developers of some of the industry’s most acclaimed new titles took to the stage to present an inside look into the making of their games. Pokemon GO’s development team, Niantic, took a rare opportunity to describe turning their landmark augmented reality title into a worldwide phenomenon. Nintendo put their expertly-honed design skills on display with their session, “Change and Constant: Breaking Conventions with ‘The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild’.” In it, they showed off simple 2D prototypes they created to test out the new gameplay mechanics, these experiments ultimately yielded one of the most acclaimed games of all time.

2017 marked a year of transition for an industry adjusting to mid-cycle hardware releases, with the recent release of the portable Nintendo Switch, the PlayStation 4 Pro, and the first year of VR hardware availability to consumers. As always, GDC 2017 featured essential speaking sessions that illuminated the way for developers learning the ins and outs of the new platforms. Among the esteemed roster of speakers were developers from Nintendo, Electronic Arts/DICE, and multiplatform VR developer Owlchemy Labs. GDC 2017 was also an opportunity for legendary game designers to host retrospectives of their influential titles with the Classic Game Postmortems sessions for Seaman presented by creator Yutaka “Yoot” Saito, Oregon Trail presented by co-inventor Don Rawitsch, Sid Meier’s Civilization presented by creators Sid Meier and Bruce Shelley, and Deus Ex, presented by game director Warren Spector.

The annual Independent Games Festival (IGF) Awards and Game Developers Choice Awards (GDCA) took place on the night of Wednesday, March 1. The 2017 IGF Awards honored some of the best independent games of the year, with Blendo Games’ Quadrilateral Cowboy earning this year’s Seumas McNally Grand Prize and accompanying $30,000 award. The title also earned the Excellence in Design Award and its $3,000 award.

Blizzard Entertainment’s Overwatch took home the award for Game of the Year at the 17th annual Game Developers Choice Awards (GDCA). The multiplayer shooter also received the award for Best Design. An archive of the IGF and GDCA ceremonies can be viewed at http://twitch.tv/gdc.

The bustling Expo Floor in Moscone’s South Hall featured a diverse roster of more than 570 companies exhibiting their hottest products, services, technologies and talents. From industry giants like Google, Sony, Microsoft and Amazon, to influential game developers like Epic Games, Insomniac Games, Hi-Rez Studios, Oculus, Valve, Unity Technologies, and hundreds of others. The Moscone North Hall housed the IGF Pavilion which featured all of the finalists for the IGF Awards, and the playable alt.ctrl.GDC demos which showcased games using unconventional controllers and alternative control schemes. Returning this year were the GDC Play Pavilions which are special areas for emerging developers, allowing them display their games to key distributors, publishers, press and investors in attendance.

In addition to the Expo Floors, GDC hosted a variety of Interactive Spaces throughout the week. Independent developers and some of the latest indie games were featured in the GDC Train Jam and Mild Rumpus areas, a special edition of Double Fine’s “Day of the Devs,” and the Indie MEGABOOTH showcase. For fans of tabletop board games, ”Shut Up and Sit Down” hosted a selection of the best board games of the year for all attendees to enjoy. This year also introduced Art Boss from iam8bit, which served as a showcase for all forms of art created during the production of a videogame.

“Every GDC gives us a deeper appreciation of the hard work that goes into every aspect of game production, and every role requires attention and deserves respect. With GDC, we aim to honor the commitment, passion and love that all game creators put into each project, I’d like to think we’ve done that this year,” said Meggan Scavio, general manager of the Game Developers Conference. “Games can be scary, exciting, funny, and above all else, fun. They run the gamut of emotions and themes, and there’s a game out there for everyone. GDC embraces this spirit, and we welcome developers of all backgrounds. The last few months have seen lots of challenges and changes, but also some truly amazing gameplay and VR experiences. If GDC 2017 is any indication, we should be in for a hell of a year for games.”

For additional information about GDC and VRDC@GDC, visit www.gdconf.com. The GDC Vault website – www.gdcvault.com – will offer access to a wide variety of GDC and VRDC@GDC 2017 lectures and sessions in the coming days and weeks, including speaker slides, synchronized video and presentations for select sponsor lectures, as well as a broad range of conference videos. Cherry MX G80-3000 Keyboard – A Review

Having been involved in PC gaming since the mid-80’s, I have had years of experience using several different styles of keyboards and mice.  I have watched keyboards go from being massive, off white behemoths, to slim, black, sexy things that have so many more features than they used to.  The last keyboard I received to review was the Razer Chroma, one that has taken over as my default day to day and gaming keyboard, due to the features that it offers and how much I just love to type on it.  The Razer Chroma was sleek, minimal in terms of size, and had multiple features attached to it, like lighting effects and programmable keys.  So when I opened my next keyboard review, I was shocked at what I found.  The Cherry MX G80-3000 keyboard is a throwback to my early days of PC gaming, and I’m not exactly sure if nestalgia, in this case, is a good thing.

Features

Let’s start off with the good first, shall we?  The Cherry MX G80-3000 is a fantastic keyboard to type on.  The Cherry MX G80-3000 can come either in black or red switches, the one I received has red switches, and is completely silent.  I found that the response times from keystroke to action was smooth and felt great.  The Cherry MX G80-3000 is a mechanical keyboard that has a service life of about 50 million keystrokes, so it will last you a very long time.  It comes USB 2.0 or PS/2 (via adaptor) ready.  The Cherry MX G80-3000 weighs a solid 2 pounds and measures in at approximately 19.48′ x 10′ x 1.96′, so it’s a monster of a keyboard.  And that’s it.  That’s the whole lot for this keyboard.  There really isn’t anything else to say about that.

You see, the Cherry MX G80-3000 does not light up, is not programmable, does not come with any additional software to add more functions to it.  It is seriously just a huge, solid keyboard that looks like it escaped from the 80’s.  The worst part?  The cost.  The Cherry MX G80-3000 will run you around $150.00.  For comparison, the Razer Blackwidow Chroma will run you around $170.00 for so much more functionality.  Now, I understand that there is great technology in the Cherry MX G80-3000 that makes it great to type on, but it’s not a gaming computer nor is it designed for the gamer.  I can see this showing up in a laboratory somewhere, not attached to your high end gaming PC.

Aesthetics

The Cherry MX G80-3000 is big, off-white, and is not backlit.  It is strictly functional is aesthetic and design.  This keyboard will not get you excited, unless you have a thing for large keyboards that look like they need to be hooked up to a Commodore 64.

Final Thoughts

This is the hardest review I’ve ever had to write.  I would rather write a review for something that is so bad, that I have something to say about it.  The Cherry MX G80-3000 is just a strictly, functional, silent, mechanical keyboard.  In this day and age of gaming keyboards, you need to have something that draws the eye to you.  Is the keyboard good looking?  Does it have software that allows you to program macros?  Is it backlit?  Is it sleek and small, as to not take up too much space on your desktop?  The Cherry MX G80-3000 answers all of these questions with a resounding “no”.  What it does do is type, and that it does quite well.  The Cherry MX G80-3000 is really nice to type on, and is something that I would use in my office at work when I worked in a lab.  It is not something that I will use on my desk at home, for gaming or for writing.  If the Cherry MX G80-3000 was priced more modestly, like about$70, I would have a little less trouble recommending it.  However, at $150, you are so much better off spending that money on a more feature-rich mechanical gaming keyboard.

The Thing at The Great Horror Movie Night

I had heard about the Great Horror Movie night from a newsletter that went out from Ten Thirtyone Productions, the company behind the LA Haunted Hayride and Great Horror Campout events. While the idea of going out to Griffith Park’s Old Zoo and watching a classic horror flick on a big screen sounded like a lot of fun, my schedule just never permitted getting out to LA on a Friday evening. Then it happened: Friday, March 3 was free and the folks at the Great Horror Movie night invited us to come out to see what it was all about. The best part of the screening was that it was a screening of John Carpenter’s seminal horror classic, The Thing!

We drove out to LA in the late afternoon/early evening and arrived at the designated parking areas about 5:45 PM. The “doors” (remember, it’s a park) open at 6:00 PM, so we were right on time to camp out a good sitting spot. the area designated for seating is spacious and at an incline so that no matter where you sit, you have a very clear view of the large, inflatable projector screen. We were lucky enough to get tickets for the reserved seating area right in front, but would have been completely happy even if we were in the back. Seating is on a lawn and you should definitely bring some blankets, pillows, or small chairs to sit upon. There are chair requirements for everyone’s viewing enjoyment. Chairs can’t be taller than 21 inches at the seat back and a maximum of 6 inches off the ground at the seat. Taller chairs are not prohibited outright, but you would be asked to move them to the side of the viewing area so you don’t block anyone’s vantage.

Click for Fullsize

At 7:30 PM, the movie was set to start and, about that time, the headmaster (who is a character from the Great Horror Campout) came out in front of the screen and entertained the crowd with some trivia games and prize giveaways. Prizes included candy, other snacks, and even free tickets to upcoming Great Horror Movie Nights! After introducing the movie, the lighting was dimmed and the movie began with some original, campy trailers (showing the upcoming films of the Great Horror Movie Night). After the screening, the headmaster came back out and thanked everyone for coming out.

Snacks and other concessions were available at the old zoo’s “caves” which, a long time ago, used to house animals for the enjoyment of zoo guests. Concessions were decent, and I would recommend supporting the event by purchasing them on-site. For those of you nervous about being out in the Old Zoo after dark, the event made sure to have security and other staff on-site to keep everything running smoothly.

Every Great Horror Movie Night also features something a little special – it could be a scare, an activity, maybe both! For The Thing, the Great Horror Movie Night had a pop up tent in which a small team of scientists performed DNA tests to see who was infected by a strange new alien organism… And those that were still human. Fortunately, I was human, but there were many “things” out there that were not!

The Great Horror Movie Night is an extremely fun and rewarding time if you are a fan of horror movies. Sitting with hundreds of fellow horror fans in the dark, watching a scary movie, and eating some popcorn while monsters periodically roam the crowds is amazing. Tickets are $17 dollars per movie online and $25 dollars at the door. If you want to jump in the deep end, $89 dollars will wrangle you a season pass! You can check out all the details at the Great Horror Movie Night’s official website. Oh – you might want to bring a flash light as, while there is some lighting put out, the trail leading up to the Old Zoo seating area is a bit dark. A flash light is always a smart move!

Starfighter Inc Multiplayer Gameplay Announced

Boston, MA, March 10, 2017 — Impeller Studios announced today the multiplayer debut of Starfighter Inc., a hardcore space combat simulator set in the solar system 200 years in the future, at PAX East, Friday, March 10 through Sunday, March 12. VR support and fully playable PvP combat will be publicly demoed for the first time. “We’ve shown that we know how to create an intense and immersive combat experience,” said Lead Designer David Wessman. “But we’re also passionate fans of the genre. We wanted to do something different with Starfighter Inc that makes it even more compelling. We want it to feel like the real deal – to make realistic space combat fun and believable. A cockpit sim utilizing both VR and PC is the perfect fit for our vision.” “With the incredible experience and talent of our team, we are thrilled to offer what we believe is the most exciting space combat game on the market to date.”

Starfighter Inc. will be featured in Kickstarter Games Castle at PAX East. “With a successful Kickstarter campaign, our team will be able to expedite the completion and release of the game and include some awesome features that we know our fans will love,” says Jack Mamais, Director. “We also value the opportunity to listen to our backers and answer their questions about the game. In the end, we are dedicated to providing the best possible experience for our players.”

Although this is Impeller Studios’ first project, the international team of designers, artists, programmers, writers, sound engineers, and scientists is led by very well-known industry veterans whose reputations were built with combat action games. The team is lead by Director Jack Mamais, best known for his work on such illustrious titles as the MechWarrior 2™ franchise, Heavy Gear 2™, Far Cry™ and Crysis™, and David Wessman, whose titles include Blood Wake™, The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay™, Saints Row™, and of course, the standout space combat franchise: the X-Wing series of Star Wars Space Combat Simulators™. Rusel DeMaria is leading the narrative design for the game and is a well-known author for multiple games and game design books as well as original Star Wars fiction associated with X-Wing and TIE Fighter. Tim Hoffman, best known for his visual effects work on MechWarrior 2: Mercenaries and Hollywood and comic franchises Transformers, Game of Thrones, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Serenity, and upcoming features Thor Ragnarok and Spider Man: Homecoming, is contributing to Starfighter Inc.’s look and overall feel.
