moo-logo

August 28, 2015 — WG Labs today revealed details about the Master of Orion Collector’s Edition. This special digital bundle for the reboot of the critically acclaimed sci-fi strategy game will include the first three legendary Master of Orion titles, a beautifully detailed digital art book, modernized orchestral soundtrack, special retro art style graphic motif, and an exclusive new race only available in the Collector’s Edition: the Terran Khanate. Players will also be granted Early Access—when available—so they can begin their quest for galactic supremacy ahead of other explorers.

The Master of Orion series set the bar for the iconic 4X (eXplore, eXpand, eXploit, and eXterminate) strategy genre, and is the foundation for WG Labs’ reimagining of the legend. With the Master of Orion Collector’s Edition, players will have the chance to relive the classic version of the game. To complement the inclusion of Master of Orion 1, 2 and 3, a digital art book is also available, showcasing the game’s deep and intricate artwork. A digital version of the entire modernized orchestral soundtrack by Dave Govett, composer for the original Master of Orion, is also included to make this Collector’s Edition truly epic.

A special retro art style can be applied to replace the modern 3D spaceships with pixelated craft, reflecting the style of the original 1990s version. Finally, a unique race, exclusively for Collector’s Edition owners is available. Named the Terran Khanate, this race is an aggressive and threatening model of a future humanity that mirrors the Human Federation but with a warlike bent, giving players a new way to conquer the stars.

Mega Man Legacy Collection – A Review (Xbox One)

Mega Man Legacy Collection 2

Remakes and collections seem to be hitting the Xbox One hard lately. With Dishonored, Rare Replay, Gears of Wars, and Kings’ Quest all hitting the Xbox One in the last month or so, it seems like this trend won’t be going away any time soon. At first, I was against this trend, but seeing how many of these types of titles I have purchased, I am rethinking my position on these types of games. With each release, I found myself enjoying these collections and remakes more and more. Then, Capcom released the Mega Man Legacy Collection, and now I am completely on board.

Truly A Legacy

The Mega Man Legacy Collection is aptly named, containing Mega Man 1 through 6 from the Nintendo Entertainment System era. These games were released roughly between the years of 1987 and 1993, depending on what country we are talking about. While the story may change depending on what game you are playing, there are many characteristics that are kept between games that made Mega Man one of the most consistent game franchises during the NES era. You play as the main hero Mega Man, an android named Rock with a gun attached to his arm called the “Mega Buster”, trying to defeat the evil Dr. Wily and his robotic henchmen.

The Mega Man Legacy Collection is rather bare bones when you really look at it, but it serves up everything you could want in a classic Mega Man collection. Not only are there six classic games here, but you receive a challenge mode that pits you against difficult challenges to complete under the set time limit. The graphics have not been updated at all, but the visuals have been changed to work on three different aspect ratios, and it looks great on all three. There are also two different filters that can be used to replicate the look of old televisions and monitors, if you feel like going completely old school.

Mega Man Legacy Collection 3

I am old enough to remember playing the original series back when they were first released. Mega Man came out my freshman year, and was one of the hardest games that I had played to that point in my life, but never felt cheap or frustrating. That title quickly changed hands the following year with the release of Ninja Gaiden, but Mega Man still felt like an accomplishment once I finished it. This series does a great job in recreating that feel of the classic game library, while adding just a few more things to keep you coming back after you have finished the main six games.

Game Play

Mega Man is played in side scrolling, 2d platforming levels, the player had a choice as to which henchmen he or she wanted to tackle first. Each time the player would defeat a henchmen, then the player would gain that henchmen’s powers and abilities, giving the player more power and strength to tackle the next henchmen. After defeating all of the henchmen, Mega Man is transported to the fortress of Dr. Wily, where he faces off against clones of the henchmen, new bosses, and Dr. Wily himself.

Mega Man Legacy Collection 1

Different henchmen are weak against certain types of weapons, so while you have the choice as to which henchmen you will face first, there is a particular path that makes the game easier to conquer. Levels are created with care to be just the right amount of difficulty, to allow persistence and timing to be rewarded without feeling cheap and unfair. The old password system has been replaced with a single point save system.

The collection is built around a two button controller set up, like the old NES controller, but the designers gave us a third button to use that emulates the turbo feature that some of the NES controllers had. This allows you to shoot three bullets with the Mega Buster with one press of the button. This may give you a slight advantage in some combat situations, but you will still need some old school timing and precision to get through the levels.

The Mega Man Legacy Collection plays perfectly. It feels just as responsive as it should, and brings me back to the days of playing the NES in my den. There is nothing really added to the collection, but nothing is missing either. It is the perfect application of the “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” mentality.

Mega Man Legacy Collection 4

Final Thoughts

Whether you are an old timer like me, or are interested in what the origins of the Mega Man franchise is like, the Mega Man Legacy Collection is a must have. Each and every game plays perfectly, and looks good doing it. Sure, the graphics are still the old 8 bit style, but that is part of the charm of these types of collections, playing the original games with their original look. I love beautiful graphics just as much as the next reviewer, but there is a reason that these games, and retro style games like Shovel Knight, are popular and that is because graphics does not necessarily make a game good. Great story lines and great game play can overcome mediocre or archaic graphics most of the time. If you call yourself a gamer, you owe it to yourself to own the Mega Man Legacy Collection. The Mega Man Legacy Collection is available now for the Xbox One for $14.99.

2015 Knott’s Scary Farm Preview Event Photo Gallery #ScaryFarm

knotts-scaryfarm-preview212 copy

Tonight, we attended the Knott’s Scary Farm preview event – a now annual presentation that brings both media and specially-selected season pass holders together to see what Knott’s Berry Farm has in store for its upcoming Halloween season. The night began a little later than intended but was underway without too much trouble. The presentation took place at the Charles M. Schulz Theatre inside Knott’s Berry Farm and was emceed by Jeff Tucker, the park’s Entertainment Supervisor.

The event started off by talking about by talking up the season pass the park is offering for their haunted event – and at $80 dollars, it is not a bad deal. Then the event switched over to returning mazes, shows, and attractions. Fan-favorite haunted houses like “Voodoo” and “Trick or Treat” will get new rooms within their haunted walls to scare guests while Elvira will be back with a whole new show. Strangely, the Mistress of the Dark herself didn’t show up to this preview event, which was odd as it felt like the audience expected her to walk out on stage during the segment on her show.

knotts-scaryfarm-preview185 copy

The park’s traditional “The Hanging” stage show is back, this time with tons of audience participation. Apparently, guests will be able to choose the outcome of certain parts of the show (I am assuming by applause). The subtitle for the show this year is “Straight Outta Calico”, which points to its always tongue-in-cheek razzing of the year’s best (and worst) pop culture phenomenons.

Another high point of the event came when designer Jon Cooke showed off the new laser guns being utilized within the park’s Special Ops: Infected attraction. Last year, I felt the guns were a big detractor to an otherwise excellent experience. This year, Special Ops: Infected will feature each guest having his or her own hitpoint level, respawns, gun upgrades, and more! These new guns have a ton of features and I can’t wait to try it out again this season.

knotts-scaryfarm-preview130 copy

Also worth mentioning was “Paranormal Inc”, an interactive haunted house where guests go on their very own ghost hunt. Not much was mentioned about the technical details of this attraction, but it sounds like a great concept and seemed to be what they were focusing on for a high-end haunted house in lieu of “Trapped”, their up-charge maze which is not returning for 2015.

*Update: The information I reported on “Paranormal Inc” is not quite correct. It will be more of a traditional, walk-through haunted house. My apologies for the inaccuracy.

The new maze, “Dead of Winter” is set in an icy wasteland filled with undead Vikings and felt similar in theme to the White Walkers of HBO’s Game of Thrones series. Finally, the park’s Green Witch character showed up with a new band of cohorts. Instead of “The Tricksters” running around making mischief throughout the park, we are going to be treated by the evil whims of the “Deadly 7”.

knotts-scaryfarm-preview203 copy

Also of super-cool note is that, for the first time in quite a while, the Calico Mine Ride attraction will be filled with monsters this Halloween season in a Western-inspired haunted ride/maze called “My Bloody Clementine”. This drew huge applause from the audience as having monsters in both the mine ride and log ride were essential parts of Halloween Haunt/Knott’s Scary Farm’s past.

After the presentation concluded, media and VIPs were escorted up to the theater’s observation deck where we had themed goodies. My compliments and thanks to the Knott’s Berry Farm marketing folks who made our visit possible as well as the catering staff.

Overall, this year should be a strong line-up for Knott’s Scary Farm visitors to experience and we can’t wait for opening night. Knott’s Scary Farm runs from September 24th, 2015 through October 31, 2015 with tickets starting at $39.99. Checkout their official website for more information.

Divinity Original Sin 2 Kickstarter Active

divinity-original-sin-2-promo-banner

August 26, 2015 – The Divinity: Original Sin 2 Kickstarter campaign is live, unveiling some of the most highly requested additions to the series. Full news below.

An epic RPG with turn-based combat, Divinity: Original Sin 2 can be played as both a single-player and multiplayer game for up to four players with both cooperative and competitive questing.

Switch seamlessly between cooperative and competitive playthroughout the entire story. Work together with your companions as one, persuade NPCs to thwart your opponents, and beware of backstabbing allies. Or, put your own goals above that of the party, and plan the moment you’ll betray them all. It’s up to you.

With Divinity: Original Sin 2, Larian Studios aims to change the way we think about narrative in RPGs, creating a world in which your history and actions shape the story, and NPCs react differently to each character.

In addition to a powerful system of classless character development, your origins and deeds will shape NPCs’ behaviors and attitudes. Your race, birthplace, and greatest feats all play a role in your journey, but watch out, as a reputation as a Traitor or Swindler can be hard to shake.

Backers will have the opportunity claim Kickstarter-only rewards including multiplayer packs, a unique Kickstarter Collector’s Edition, custom artwork, and even a surprise pack that includes handpicked trinkets, mementos and other little things that inspired the team as they were developing the game. To ensure all backers can give feedback to the team, every backer at the $25 tier and higher will receive Alpha and Beta access!

These are just a few of the features announced for Divinity: Original Sin 2. You can learn about the story, the new crafting system, the enhanced combat and more at:

THPS5_School_Tony_Airwalk

SANTA MONICA, Calif. – August 26, 2015 – Today Activision Publishing, Inc. shared a new behind-the-scenes trailer for Tony Hawk’s® Pro Skater 5 that chronicles each of the skateboarding professionals in the game. There are riders from different eras of skateboarding sharing their perspectives on gaming history and how the classic THPS games intersected with the ever-progressing skateboarding scene, as well as what it’s been like to participate in THPS5.

Tony Hawk himself oversaw the inclusion of the following pros in THPS5: Nyjah Huston, Riley Hawk, Aaron “Jaws” Homoki, Ishod Wair, Leticia Bufoni, Chris Cole, David Gonzalez, Andrew Reynolds, and Lizzie Armanto.

“I wanted a mix of pros that represent the diversity of skating today. Ishod Wair, David Gonzalez, and my son Riley were obvious choices because of their versatility and relevancy to modern skaters. The girls are represented well with two of the best: Leticia Bufoni on street and Lizzie Armanto on transition. Andrew Reynolds (aka The Boss) is still considered one of the best, so he is back representing the OG THPS skaters. Chris Cole and Nyjah Huston are contest dominators and phenomenal talents,” said Tony Hawk. “And Aaron ‘Jaws’ Homoki, is a modern-day stuntman on a skateboard, dropping off the biggest stuff he can find. He was a perfect fit for the over-the-top action of THPS5.”

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 5 rekindles the signature style of classic Pro Skater games in a brand-new set of levels with the same renowned focus on daring objectives, fine-tuned controls – including manuals and reverts – for endless shredding and high-score tricks.
