funcom-the-park

Oslo, Norway – October 13th, 2015 – Funcom announced today that its first-person psychological horror experience ‘The Park‘ will be released for the Windows PC on October 27th this year. ‘The Park‘ is set in an amusement park where a dark and sinister secret is just waiting to be uncovered.

Starting today, the game will be available for pre-order on SteamGamersGate and Green Man Gaming for the promotional price of 9.99 USD. ‘The Park’ is a fully standalone single-player game set within ‘The Secret World‘ universe — Funcom’s modern-day myths and mysteries massively multiplayer online game. As a special treat for players of ‘The Secret World‘, purchase of ‘The Park‘ will include several unique items that can be used in the MMO, including the terrifying Chipmunk Killer costume shown in the key art image for ‘The Park‘.

To learn more what ‘The Park’ is all about, have a look at this newly released video showing both gameplay footage and interview with key developers on the project.

“‘The Park‘ is all about the psychological aspect of horror and the slow building of tension and unease through storytelling and exploration,” says Creative Director Joel Bylos. “The story is told over one to two hours of gameplay and we have tried to tell a tale that is both terrifying and deeply emotional at the same time, offering players a different Halloween experience than they might expect going in.”

Focusing entirely on intense storytelling and exploration instead of combat and action, ‘The Park‘ draws inspiration from games such as ‘Gone Home’, ‘Dear Esther‘ and ‘The Vanishing of Ethan Carter‘. The player must step into the shoes of Lorraine, a mother whose son has gone missing inside the park, and what follows is a terrifying and emotional journey.

Warhammer: End Times Vermintide – Dwarf Ranger Action Reel

Warhammer-End-Times-Vermintide-Screenshots-1

October 12, 2015 – Independent developer Fatshark today released the fourth of five Action Reels, showcasing gameplay from each of the five heroes playable in Warhammer: End Times – Vermintide. The latest Action Reel is of Bardin Goreksson, the Dwarf Ranger hailing from the Grey Mountains. Dwarves are often considered a gregarious folk, prideful and not afraid to offend, and few are more so than Bardin. He is not the vindictive type or cruel in nature, but he has a habit of belittling his comrades through sheer ignorance and his robust attitude. He will oftentimes be the loudest in the group, even if silence would have been preferable. If negotiations go sour, the Dwarf Ranger is the first with his axe out and swinging.

In Vermintide, the city of Ubersreik is under siege as players select from a band of five heroes with different play-styles and abilities, all equipped with unique gear and personalities. Working together cooperatively, players must use their individual attributes to survive an apocalyptic invasion from hordes of relentless, power hungry Skaven, across a range of environments stretching from the top of the Magnus Tower to the bowels of the Under Empire.

Vermintide will launch on Steam for Windows PC on October 23rd and is now available to pre-order in a Standard and Collector’s edition. To secure your pre-order please visit the Warhammer: The End Times – Vermintide Steam page: store.steampowered.com/app/235540/

2015 LA Haunted Hayride Black Carpet and Review

la-haunted-hayride-2015-267 copy

Our evening at the 2015 Los Angeles Haunted Hayride began as it usually does, with their black carpet event. We arrived to the Griffith Park Old Zoo location just prior to dusk and checked-in with the media desk. We got situated on the press line side of the red carpet and waited in the sprinkling rain for the celebrities to arrive. One by one, they came and walked the carpet. We got the chance to see Bridget Marquardt, Bryan Greenburg, and Elaine Hendrix – to name just a few. After taking photographs for a while, it was time to venture into the event location proper and check out its various attractions. The LA Haunted Hayride offers three ticket tiers – General admission for $43, VIP admission for $59, and a hayride only ticket for $30.

The LA Haunted Hayride has consistently been one of my favorite Halloween attractions for several years now – very sadly, until this one. Unfortunately, the entire narrative of the hayride attraction is muddled and inconsistent with no real payoff. The queue line is dotted with monitors telling about the history of the mythical “boogeyman”, so I fully expected the hayride to be a search for or, perhaps, an escape from the boogeyman. The different vignettes that your hay cart passes by seem disjointed and, even though we got teased of the boogeyman’s approach near the end of the ride, there is no climax or resolution featuring the creature itself – it just falls a bit flat for my liking. Also, the hayride was missing some of the technical ingenuity from years past.

la-haunted-hayride-2015-220 copy

Past hayrides featured growing demons, burn victims still smoldering as they attacked the hay cart, and even crow people that descended on the cart via giant, flexible poles. This year seemed to lack that magical, “how did they do that” factor. Additionally, they have erected these black vinyl-draped fences along a lot of the hayride route. This is a mistake as the outlying forest of the Griffith Park Old Zoo location is really creepy and seeing it adds to the overall ride experience. Even seeing glimpses of the next vignette in the distance adds to the suspense of what might happen to riders. TenThirtyOne Productions was very focused on getting the New York Haunted Hayride online this year and, in its natal form, I can’t help but wonder if it took some of the work away from the LA experience. My hope is that next year, after the New York Haunted Hayride has had its base infrastructure set up, that the designers and creators of the experience can more equally share their time between coasts. That is not to say that the hayride is devoid of scares – not by any means. Several people in our hay cart were screaming like banshees as the monsters terrorized them. Overall, the hayride just didn’t live up to its previous incarnations this year.

(As an aside, I must confess that I am terribly saddened to have had to write that preceding paragraph. I have been a fan of the LA Haunted Hayride for a long time – it is the only haunted attraction in Southern California that successfully merged the feel and look of a Midwestern Halloween carnival with modern effects and scares.)

After the hayride, we ventured over to Jack’s Carving Shack where, for a small fee, guests can carve pumpkins. The first Sunday night of the event’s run saw very little in the way of crowds, so there were really no lines for anything. This, undoubtedly, will change as we get more into October proper. The hayride can attract over 60,000 people a season, so be sure to get there early if you attend. Last year, we saw all manner of cool-looking pumpkin designs and it is always fun to see how creative people can get with their creations.

la-haunted-hayride-2015-199 copy

The “Grub Shack” is back this year and the menu hasn’t changed since last time. It’s all vegan-friendly, so don’t expect your burger to be real meat. That being said, the “Pumpkin Head Fritters” are delicious. Unfortunately, they are still using cold caramel sauce on the “Candyman Apples” – a mistake. I hope next year they select hot caramel to drizzle on them. I know hot caramel can be tricky, but the pay-off in taste experience is well worth it. The “High Tension Taquitos” where also good as were the “Misery Mac & Cheese Balls”. Do yourself a favor and just order the mac & cheese balls plain – sans ranch or BBQ sauce. The “cheap” flavor of the sauces detract from the crispy, cheesy goodness of the cheese balls. Also, they should bring back the hot chocolate that the “Grub Shack” had a couple of years ago – nothing sets the Halloween mood like candied or caramel apples and hot cocoa on a cool Fall evening.

Here is another example of where the LA Haunted Hayride needs to regain a bit of its previous “heart” from past years. In past hayrides, the event would see these concession workers walking around the grounds selling things like candied apples, popcorn, sodas, etc. What was cool was that they were all themed and costumed in some way. I loved the candied apple hawker’s mask that looked like two candied apples were shoved into his eye sockets. This year, there was simply a guy who looked like he walked in from the public park with an ice chest of sodas and a stool sitting on the side of the event grounds – no uniform or costume. In fact, I was tempted to call security at one point because he didn’t look like he was an official worker of the LA Haunted Hayride or its food vendor. Then I saw a recent image from the NY Haunted Hayride and, sure enough, there was the candied apple mask. I do believe they split their resources a ton this year in getting the East Coast event off the ground.

la-haunted-hayride-2015-271 copy

The “In-Between” dark maze has returned and is as winding and disorientating as ever. Guests are given a small lamp and are made to wear masks inside. The cool part about this haunted house is that the monsters are wearing the same kind of masks. So, guests are never sure if they are running into monsters or other lost souls trying to navigate their way through the dark experience.

The new “Trick Or Treat” haunted house offers guests a chance to engage in trick or treating, LA Haunted Hayride style. Guests move from scene to scene, receiving either a trick or a treat – the treats in this case being real candy! The timing of some of the gags was a bit off but, overall, this was interesting to go through and experience.

“House of Shadows” is also a new haunted house at the LA Haunted Hayride. A semi-escape room style experience, groups of guests are made to navigate the dark interior looking for the boogeyman. There are several neat little gimmicks throughout the haunted house and, overall, this was the most successful of the various attractions at the LA Haunted Hayride. Definitely check this one out if you get up to the LA Haunted Hayride this year.

Overall, this year’s Los Angeles Haunted Hayride feels like it has taken a backseat to TenThirtyOne’s New York Haunted Hayride. They seem to have received a lot of costumes, masks, and props from the LA experience and it has suffered for it. I would call this season a growing pain for the event – you will have fun, but you may be letdown if you attended the events previous incarnations.

The 17th Door Haunted Experience Review

17thdoor-2

Interactivity – That’s the word of the day for haunted attractions and The 17th Door Haunted Experience, based at the Tustin Market Place in Tustin, CA has taken it as one of its core concepts. As The 17th Door is a newcomer to the haunted attraction game here in Southern California, and we love checking out haunted houses during the scary season, we rushed to attend a recent media event and experience it, first-hand!

The 17th Door haunted attraction is an immersive experience to say the least. Right when you walk in the door, you already feel as if you’re taken to dilapidated college campus, the theme behind The 17th Door’s inaugural season. The collegiate backdrop holds a story of a troubled student whose nightmares are coming to life and you are thrown right into the mix to experience the terror, first-hand along with her – a trip through her messed up mind, as it were.

The seventeen interactive rooms within the attraction hold multiple hands-on scares from exploring the troubled student’s dorm room, venturing through a dank drug lab, a classroom with a paddle-happy instructor, or even being tossed into a cramped asylum cell – all the while, the monsters outside are laughing and toying with you as you await the inevitable end.

17thdoor-3

Along with The 17th Door’s amazing visuals and set design, the attraction also contains a lot of veteran monster talent from other Southern California haunted attractions who now call The 17th Door home. This means you won’t be walking away unscathed when it comes to who’s behind the mask, driving the in-your-face scares. These guys are absolute professionals and I have no worries whatsoever that they are delivering powerhouse scares each night. Speaking of masks, multiple scare actors in pig masks are creeping through the halls and rooms as pigs are the main source of fear for our main character’s nightmarish romp. The silicone mask making geniuses at Immortal Masks get a lot of time to show off their amazing handy work through many of the masks and characters in The 17th Door, and their commitment to quality definitely shows through in the monsters at the attraction.

One thing to keep in mind when heading to The 17th Door is that it’s not your typical walk-through haunted house. It is much more interactive than what you may be used to from Knott’s Scary Farm or The Queen Mary’s Dark Harbor and you really have to keep up with what’s going on around you to get the full effect of the attraction. With this being its very first year, The 17th Door is still working out the kinks but they are off to a hell of a start. Visually, their haunted attraction resembles the amazing set design you’d see at a multi-million dollar theme park, not something you would expect to see at a local, freshman haunted house.  The attention to the little set design details that the team has crafted is absolutely stunning, not just in their interior arrangement but also in their characters, each having their own specific look.

17thdoor-4

Beware, there is a chance you may get a little wet while wandering the halls of The 17th Door and if you’re afraid of closed-in spaces, this attraction may not be for you. While it might not be the typical haunted house walk-through you’d come to expect, where your experience is based on the scares the talent alone delivers, the immersive interactivity of The 17th Door is what makes it stand out from other attractions in the area. If you’re up for something wildly original from a team who is very passionate about making an impact on the Halloween season in Southern California, The 17th Door Haunted Experience is not to be missed. Right out of the starting gate, they are running hard and it’s going to be exciting to see how this attraction evolves over the next coming years. The passion for a great haunt experience driving this team is what makes The 17th Door an up and coming powerhouse in the local Halloween market. Best wishes to the entire team as they power through the first Halloween season!

Boss Monster Review (PC)

maxresdefault
I started playing Magic The Gathering when it was first getting started. I attended Humboldt State University which was close enough to their operations that we got cards much cheaper than they were anywhere else in the country – part of their plan to garner a ground level movement to make the game popular. The hard part with these card games is finding digital versions that give you the same feel – it’s just difficult to replicate. I didn’t really find it in the Magic The Gathering video games. Blizzard’s Hearthstone has done an excellent job and tied in characters we have come to love from the Warcraft franchise. So why go for any other ones? Boss Monster tries to tie the old school,  NES-style graphics together with cards from the popular Boss Monster tabletop card games for just a $5 price tag. I have played the actual card game and it’s a blast – so how does the video game stack up?

Description:
The best-selling indie card game has arrived to Steam! Boss Monster is a dungeon-building card game that challenges players to become the ultimate villains: video game bosses.
Thousands of players around the world have enjoyed the paper version of the game, but now Brotherwise Games has partnered with video game developer Plain Concepts, creators of Wave Engine, to bring Boss Monster from the tabletop to the digital world!

ss_d8b1b031dd99033a6fd55cfa95c4a750c8ccb54d.1920x1080Features:
– Play against up to three AI opponents in solo play.
– Challenge other human opponents online.
– Play with ALL of the bosses, rooms, and spells available in the base game …including rare out-of-print cards!
– Explore new “digitally-enhanced” cards: four rooms, three new Bosses, and a new spell that all take advantage of the digital platform, allowing stats and treasure values to change as you play (coming in future expansions).

Hands On Deck:
Boss Monster hides a fairly complicated card game beneath its retro, NES graphics and MIDI chiptune music. At first it seems like a tower defense game where you play a monster boss who builds his dungeon to keep adventurers from slaughtering you. You get 5 rooms and start with simple monsters and build up elaborate traps, each room damaging the hero in a certain way so that hopefully by the last room he/she dies. If they get through you get wounds, five wounds and you die, if you kill them you get souls, collect 10 souls and you win. Then there is the opponent aspect – the other monster bosses you are competing with. You get to play against one to three opponents, whichever one of you lives longer or get the 10 souls first wins. Adventurers won’t just wander into your dungeon of their own choice though, you have to trick them in by having your room cards provide lures as well such as treasure, weapons, books and relics which can lure thieves, fighters, mages and clerics. They will be drawn in by the dungeon with the most lures for their class. So you may wind up with a beautifully built dungeon but with not enough lures all the adventurers will still go to your opponent.

images.akamai.steamusercontent.com

This can actually work to your advantage if your opponent doesn’t have enough damage in their dungeon to kill the adventurers or if you have a spell that can neutralize an opponent’s room damage, steal a kill or send the adventurer back to town. Did I say spell? I did indeed as besides being able to setup monster rooms and attach traps to them there are also spell cards that can be played at specific times that can turn the tide of the game as well. It looks so simple at first glance, five rooms, one to three opponents but this simple looking field that appears like a tower defense built with rooms instead of towers and it gets really complicated fast. I played the tutorial provided a few times before settling in for an actual game against the AI and still felt a little unsure going in. I went on a winning streak but never a resounding victory, it always seemed a close call.

There is a multiplayer mode but the community hasn’t built up quite yet, given a bit of time it probably will. The game has in-app purchases available, and the base price of the game is $4.99. The in-app purchases consist of additional card packs to add to the base game so that it doesn’t get stale. Just make sure you don’t wind up spending more in mirco-transactions than you feel the game is worth.

Last Draw:
Boss Monster is a fun game with a throwback style and deceptively complicated play much like Magic The Gathering if it had been made on the original Nintendo Entertainment System. It’s a nice game to play to fill time here or there or when you want a solid distraction. Also, it is a small file on your computer, has great nostalgic feel and a hidden depth which is nice to keep the mind sharp, and the price can hardly be beat either.
