Knott’s Berry Farm Announces 2nd Annual For the Cure Promotion

knottspink

Buena Park, CA (December 2014) –  Knott’s Berry Farm and Susan G. Komen Orange County are working together, for the second year, to raise money for breast cancer awareness, services and research by offering a special “Pink Ticket” and limited edition specially designed “pink” merchandise from January 5 through March 27.

“We are honored to continue such a successful partnership with Knott’s Berry Farm,” said Lisa Wolter, executive director of Komen Orange County. “Without the ongoing support from our community, local access to breast health and breast cancer services for women and men would be nearly impossible. Knott’s gives us the opportunity to not only reach a diverse population, but to continue saving lives.”

Studies show that one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer. The breast cancer mortality rate in Orange County is the highest among Latinas, despite this population having the lowest incidence rate. Komen Orange County works with the Latina community – through its Unidos Contra el Cancer de Seno Coalition – by providing strong and effective breast health engagement and support groups with multi-lingual volunteers. Komen Orange County also fosters ongoing partnerships with Northgate Gonzalez Markets and Cafecitos, a Spanish support group, to bring education, outreach and free mammograms to the Latina population.

The three month long promotion will provide guests with the opportunity to enjoy Knott’s world class entertainment, attractions and specially-themed “pink” décor, while supporting a great cause. The famous Calico Mine Ride, Knott’s Berry Farm Main Gate and the Camp Snoopy waterfall will all glow pink in honor of the campaign.  Starting January 5, through March 27, guests can purchase “Pink Tickets” for theme park admission only online at www.knotts.com. A portion of the “Pink Tickets” proceeds will benefit Komen Orange County.

In 2014, the successful two-month partnership with Komen Orange County helped raise nearly $100,000 for the organization. The monies raised provided underserved and underinsured women and men in Orange County with access to breast health care and services.  Additional fundraising efforts included the sale of discounted “Pink Tickets” and “Knott’s for the Cure” memorabilia as well as employee fundraising initiatives.

Cedar Fair Entertainment Company, the parent organization of Knott’s Berry Farm, has raised nearly $1 million for Susan G. Komen in the last five years. This is the second year the partnership will directly impact awareness and services on a local level within Orange County.

Guests entering the theme park during the time of the promotion will be greeted by a beautifully themed pink Knott’s Berry Farm for the Cure display along with inspirational testimonials by breast cancer survivors. Additionally, limited edition “pink” t-shirts and specially designed canteens will be available for purchase. A portion of the “pink” merchandise proceeds will benefit Susan G. Komen Orange County.

“During the Knott’s Berry Farm for the Cure partnership, guests can honor loved ones,” said Raffi Kaprelyan, vice president and general manager of Knott’s Berry Farm. “The partnership between Knott’s Berry Farm and Susan G. Komen Orange County is an impactful one, as the two organizations come together to advance women’s health by raising money and awareness to fight breast cancer.”

Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris – A Review (PC)

lara-osiris

Lara Croft and I have a very long relationship. As an ex-archaeologist and lover of anything Indiana Jones-like, the Lara Croft series has always held a place in my heart. Sure she is more tomb robber then archaeologist, but I’ve always understood the fine line between the two occupations, and how one can quickly turn into the other. I never did get to play the latest game of Croft’s, been way to busy with my other life, so when this review came up I was excited and ready.

Story

The Temple of Osiris is set in Egypt and begins with Lara Croft racing through a tomb, against another robber named Carter Bell. Deep within this particular tomb, they discover the prison that is holding the Egyptian gods, Horus and Isis. Horus and Isis were imprisoned by the god Set, after Set had dismembered Isis’ husband and Horus’ father, Osiris. Set went on to rule Ancient Egypt until he was dethroned and sent to the Underworld, to rule over the dead. Horus and Isis quickly join up with Croft and Bell, as the four set out to collect the fragmented parts of a stature of Osiris. Once the statue is complete, Osiris will return to life to battle and defeat Set.

Ok, so the story isn’t going to win awards for drama and outstanding narrative, but it does a good job in bringing the old serials back to life again. The characters all have very specific goals to accomplish within the narrative, and are very one dimensional in that sense. You will not see a character grow or change during the course of the story, but it’s fine. Many games can excel despite the story being lackluster or the characters lacking any depth, as long as the game play works well, and it does in The Temple of Osiris.

Game Play

The Temple of Osiris is, at it’s heart, a dual stick shooter with puzzle elements. The absolute best way to play this game on the PC is with a controller. You can play it with a mouse and a keyboard, like I did, but you will be fighting the control scheme the whole way. That’s not to say that the controls were pad, but they are definitely tailored for a controller over a mouse and keyboard.

The Temple of Osiris can be played solo or as a co-op game. Up to four players can play via online connection, and the puzzles will adjust accordingly to the number of players in game. If your are playing solo, the puzzles will be adjusted so only one player is needed to solve them. For instance, you will receive a staff that will allow you to lower and raise segments of the tomb by yourself without needing another player to help. While in a full 4 player co-op game, those same segments will require players to find levers or pressure pads to raise or lower them. It’s a very nice addition to the game, which makes it great to play either way.

osiris-battle

Combat is handled through a dual stick design, where one stick moves the character and the other stick aims the gun. You can find weapons and other items, such as rings or necklaces, that change your combat abilities as you explore the tombs. Weapons, other then your trusty handguns, have a limited amount of ammo and different characteristics, depending on the type of gun. Enemies drop ammo, so I never once came close to running out of it. Just start blasting everything in sight, you will be fine. The items that you can find are very interesting, since many come with a positive and negative effect for equipping it. You have to balance both the positive and negative to make sure you aren’t gimping yourself too much when you run into a boss battle.

The Temple of Osiris really excels in the game play category. This is where the game shines through for me, and is really fun to play. If you can ignore the story line, and the really horrendous voice acting (more on that in a moment), then you will be rewarded with great game play.

Aesthetics

Visually, the Temple of Osiris does nothing really ground breaking, but doesn’t do anything bad either. Each tomb is interesting to view and is light very nicely. The tombs have some variance in them, but I wouldn’t expect much. After a while, the design will start to look all the same. The characters are design well too. Lara Croft is wearing her traditional outfit from the original series, but has had a reduction in the…er…um…chest region. This reduction goes more along the line with her current look in the next gen games, then her original look from the Playstation. For me, this look is the best of both worlds, traditional looking Lara Croft with a much more reserved look for the body type.

The voice acting is by far the worst thing about this game. It is awful to the point of being funny, then it turns out to be even worse. The dialogue is bad to begin with, whether that was a design decision or a funding one is unknown, but the actors’ delivery of every line just makes it worse. The actors are not into this at all, and it shows. This doesn’t bring the game into the unplayable realm, but it does keep the game from being a better product then it is.

Final Thoughts

Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris is a solid action/puzzle game for the PC. With it’s isometric view and arcade-like action, the Temple of Osiris will feel right at home for those of you, like me, that grew up on this type of game. Combat is satisfying, if you use a controller and not a mouse and keyboard, and the puzzles are simple enough to get you to think without tearing out your hair. The way the puzzles adjust according to how many players are in the game is really a great feature, and should be used by more co-op puzzle games in the future. I feel that Crystal Dynamics really did a great job here, if you ignore the cheesy story line and horrid voice acting. Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris is available now on Steam.

TruGlo 2×42 Magnified Red / Green Dot Sight Review

TG8030B2_l

Airsofters often have a conundrum when it comes to purchasing an optic for their airsoft gun. A lot of this can depend on budget, usage, etc. A CQC airsoft player will probably want to choose a different type of optic than an airsoft sniper that only plays outdoors in large fields or AOs. TruGlo’s 2x42mm red/green dot scope is a ruggedly-built, 2x scope that will give you mid-range marksman a good optic to accurately send plastic downrange.

Official Features:

  • 2-power magnification
  • 4-reticle choices for the most accurate targeting with any shooting condition
  • 42mm objective lens diameter
  • Shock resistant
  • Waterproof / fog-proof
  • Maximum eye relief
  • See through / flip-up lens caps, optical-quality / all-weather
  • Multiple brightness settings
  • Lightweight / easy to mount
  • Multi-coated lenses produce more than 95% light transmittance
  • Special anti-reflective interior finish eliminates stray or reflective light from appearing inside the sight
  • Click windage and elevation adjustments
  • Integrated lanyard system prevents loss of screw-down W/E caps
  • Integrated mounting system fits both Weaver and Picatinny-style bases
  • Ideal for shotguns, handguns, rifles, muzzleloaders, paintball, airsoft, and crossbows

TG8030A2_l

If you have been around airsoft and real steel optics before, you will note that the design of the TruGlo 2×42 Magnified Red/Green Dot Sight isn’t anything special. It has a straight forward layout with windage and elevation adjustment knobs, a rotary red/green dot control (and battery compartment), as well as an attached, 20mm Picatinny rail mount. It also features a flip up front and rear optic protector that will allow you to use the scope without fear of being destroyed by BBs. It does affect the field of view slightly but, if it is too much for you, you could also leave the protectors flipped up and use a more traditional airsoft scope protector unit – the choice is yours. One of the cooler things about this scope is that it features four different reticle types, so you have several to choose from depending on your situation. Eye relief is listed as “unlimited” and, for the most part, I did find that to be the case. The four available reticles are crisp and the red/green lighting is vibrant and easy to see. It also has multiple red/green dot intensity settings so that you can get the brightness level you need.

My biggest issue with the TruGlo 2×42 Magnified Red/Green Dot Sight was that, while the objective is 42mm in diameter, the actual tube gives the shooter a much narrower field of view than I like to see on my optics. This is definitely not an optic for players looking at running a more traditional red dot sight as, with the 2x magnification and narrow field of view, it is not that effective in a reflex sight role. This sight was actually designed as a scope – an optic you need to take time to carefully aim down and fire your shots. If you play the role of a designated marksman or, perhaps, even a sniper if on a smaller field you should find the optic very valuable with its rock solid build quality. If you are more of a rifleman or assaulter, I would probably look for a more traditional red dot with larger field of view. It should also be mentioned that this scope is not the right height to co-witness with the front sight post of an AR-15 style rifle. If you are looking for this capability, you could get a rail riser for it but, again, this scope is a 2x magnified optic. The front sight post of your rifle is going to look rather strange through it. But, I digress…

Overall, the TruGlo 2×42 Magnified Red/Green Dot Sight is a great optic for real steel shooting and a good option for those airsoft players looking for exceptional build quality in a magnified scope. It is only a 2x magnification but, for many airsoft guns out there, you really don’t need a long range optic – especially if you are mainly playing as a DMR or sniper on a smaller field. The TruGlo 2×42 Magnified Red/Green Dot Sight has an MSRP of $189 dollars but you can find it for a lot cheaper if you shop around.
