July 24, 2013 — Wargaming, the leading free-to-play MMO developer and publisher, today announced the release of Update 8.7 for its MMO action game World of Tanks in Europe. North American players will get the new version on July 29. Korean and Southeast Asian tankmen will be able to download the 8.7 at the end of July.

Update 8.7 introduces a brand new branch of British self-propelled guns, including the iconic Sexton, Bishop and the Crusader, just to name a few. A number of post-World War II prototypes take their place in the middle tiers, while the intimidating Conqueror Gun Carriage becomes the Tier 10 arty.

The update also adds a brand new winter map, Severogorsk, as well as visual revamps of the Highway and Harbour maps

While at Comic-Con, it was revealed in a cool “and one more thing” moment that Warner Bros. is working on a Superman / Batman crossover film. Now, Warner Bros. has released the official press info on it. Enjoy!

BURBANK, CA, July 20, 2013 – On the heels of the worldwide success of “Man of Steel,” director Zack Snyder is bringing together the two greatest Super Heroes of all time—Batman and Superman—for the first time on the big screen. The announcement was made today by Greg Silverman, President, Creative Development and Worldwide Production, and Sue Kroll, President, Worldwide Marketing and International Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures.

The current hit, “Man of Steel,” has taken in more than $630 million at the worldwide box office to date, and climbing. Along with its star, Henry Cavill, the upcoming film brings back Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne and Diane Lane. The new Batman has yet to be cast. Snyder is co-writing the story with David S. Goyer, who will then pen the screenplay. Production is expected to begin in 2014, with an anticipated release date in Summer 2015.

Silverman stated, “Zack Snyder is an incredibly talented filmmaker, but beyond that, he’s a fan first and he utterly gets this genre. We could not think of anyone better suited to the task of bringing these iconic Super Heroes to the screen in his own way.” Kroll added, “We are thrilled to be back in business with Zack and his team on this next movie. The success of ‘Man of Steel’ is a wonderful testament to the love and support that both fans and new audiences, worldwide, have for these characters. We are very excited to see what Zack has in store for all of us.”

Diane Nelson, President, DC Entertainment, noted, “Superman and Batman together on the big screen is a dream come true for DC fans everywhere. All of us at DC Entertainment could not be more excited for Zack’s continuing vision for the DC Universe.”

Zack Snyder, who made a surprise appearance at Comic-Con today, breaking the news to audiences there, later said, “I’m so excited to begin working again with Henry Cavill in the world we created, and I can’t wait to expand the DC Universe in this next chapter. Let’s face it, it’s beyond mythological to have Superman and our new Batman facing off, since they are the greatest Super Heroes in the world.”

The new film brings back Charles Roven and Deborah Snyder as producers. This time, Christopher Nolan and Emma Thomas are serving as executive producers, along with Benjamin Melniker and Michael E. Uslan. Thomas offered, “Whilst our ‘Dark Knight’ trilogy is complete, we have every confidence that Zack’s fresh interpretation will take the character in a new and exciting direction. His vision for Superman opened the door to a whole new universe and we can’t wait to see what Zack does with these characters.”

The film is based on Superman characters created by Jerry Siegel & Joe Shuster, and Batman characters created by Bob Kane, published by DC Entertainment

EA Loses Madden Lawsuit to Developer

madden-final_2

July 23, 2013 — After three days of deliberations, a jury in U.S. District Court in the Northern District of California today ruled in favor of Robin Antonick, the original designer and developer of Electronic Arts’ (NASDAQ: EA) best-selling Madden NFL Football games, awarding him what should be, with interest, more than $11 million. It also gives him the ability to pursue the same claims against EA for games released after 1996—games with significantly higher revenues.

The case alleges that EA and Antonick signed a series of publishing and development contracts, culminating in a 1986 agreement that requires EA to pay him royalties on any derivative works related to the original version of EA Madden, including current annual releases, and prohibits EA from using his confidential information. The lawsuit claims that EA failed to pay millions of dollars in royalties owed to Antonick and to keep his work confidential as required by the contract.

The jury found that several of EA’s games, published between 1990-1996, were virtually identical to the original version of Madden NFL Football, developed by Antonick, and used substantially similar plays and formations. With mandatory prejudgment interest, the verdict should entitle Antonick to more than $11 million.

“This is a tremendous victory,” said Rob Carey, partner at Hagens Berman Sobol Shapiro LLP and one of Antonick’s attorneys. “In many ways, this trial was a test of each party’s version of events. The jury uniformly rejected the idea that this game was developed without Robin’s work. It is, if nothing, a good omen for the next phase of the litigation.”

A future phase of the trial will be held to determine whether EA is responsible for paying Antonick for games published between 1997 and the present, where revenues exceed $3 billion.

Antonick and his attorneys still plan to seek additional compensation during this stage of the litigation from the judge, who reserved for himself to decide claims for disgorgement of EA’s profits. They will also seek to appeal previous rulings that excluded Super Nintendo games and fraud claims from the jury deliberations.

Today, the jury found that Antonick’s game and the EA games shared substantial similarity in the plays and formations available to the user, and were virtually identical as a whole.

Antonick is also represented by Leonard Aragon of Hagens Berman Sobol Shapiro LLP, and Hagens Berman co-counseled with the Paynter Law Firm.

“We expect the new Star Control to come in the form of a reboot, similar to what Firaxis did with the XCOM series last year,” said Brad Wardell, president and CEO of Stardock. “We are looking at Star Control II as a major source of inspiration.”

Entering its 20th year as an independent studio, Stardock remains one of the few development studios solely dedicated to PC gaming. Its critically-acclaimed PC games include the timeless Galactic Civilizations series and the award-winning Real-Time Strategy game (RTS) Sins of a Solar Empire, which has sold more than two million copies worldwide. Star Control maintains a cult following as a beloved PC franchise, with the first title including options for melee or strategy gameplay set in a science fiction universe. The World’s End Review and Comic-Con Screening Q&A

the-worlds-end

While at this week’s San Diego Comic-Con, we got invited to a special showing of Edgar Wright’s “The World’s End” – the final installment in his “Blood and Ice Cream” trilogy, which began with Shaun of the Dead and was followed-up by Hot Fuzz. In The World’s End, a group of childhood friends are brought back to their home town of Newton Haven almost 20 years after their attempting to complete “the golden mile” – a 12 public house pub crawl. Much like in real life, however, our home towns often seem to change from how we remember them as kids. In the case of Newton Haven, the change comes from the fact that it seems like the town’s inhabitants have been replaced by… Something else entirely.

IMG_0644

We arrived at the screening and got all checked-in, then found our seats in the media section of the auditorium. Then, shortly before the movie began, we were surprised that none other than Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg (who tweeted early that day he had returned to the UK), and Nick Frost were going to watch the movie with us and do a short Q&A afterwards! Edgar Wright actually said prior to the screening starting that we were the first U.S. audience to see the final film before its release date. Other celebs in the house included Nathan Fillion (Firefly) and Bill Paxton (Aliens). Paxton being there was somewhat ironic as, at one point during the movie, an “Aliens” reference was made which got a huge laugh from the audience – not just because it was funny, of course, but because we had Pvt. Hudson in our theater with us! Game over man, game over!

IMG_0677

It was an utter pleasure to see so many returning actors from previous Edgar Wright films and even his TV series, Spaced. Look for cameos by Mark Heap, Julia Deakin, and others! Wright continues to impress as a filmmaker and it seems that, with each film he makes, he adds another tool or skill to his directorial toolbox. Even The World’s End’s fight sequences feel very much like those in “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World”, and with good reason – he used the same fight choreographer in both films! The World’s End moves along at a speedy, yet-comfortable pace that delivers the perfect amount of information to the viewer at any one point during the film. Even when the action heats up, I was clearly able to make out what was going on.

-END SPOILERY VIDEO-

The film’s climax and resolution took several unexpected turns, leaving me pleasantly surprised that I couldn’t figure out what was going to happen ahead of time. My only hope is that the team of Wright, Pegg, and Frost will team up more often so that we don’t have to wait so long before getting another of their masterpieces.

Overall, The World’s End is an exceedingly-fun piece of filmmaking which viewers will, like Wright’s films before it, find something new in it at each screening. Looking back on my screening of the film and my entire Comic-Con experience, I feel hard-pressed to replicate the geeky awesomeness of seeing this film with its makers when it gets its actual release on August 23, 2013. But, I look forward to trying… Cheers!
