Trying to get into the holiday spirit, you have probably left the ghosts Of Halloween behind you and are thinking of gifts rather than stiffs. Well, we here at Gamingshogun.com think that every day is a good day for a good scare. So, when the opportunity to sit down with a dark and gory game came along, an evil Grinch-ish grin crosses our collective face. In this case, it is a remake of an old horror favorite called Dementium II – this time, in HD. Hence, the new name: Dementium II HD!

Description:
You are William Redmoor, recent recipient of a radical brain operation and current inmate at the clandestine Bright Dawn Treatment Center for the criminally insane. Your memories are fuzzy, but it appears that your wife and daughter were murdered, and the evidence points toward you as the killer.

The Doctor’s methods don’t appear to have worked – Demons you thought vanquished have appeared once again. Images of a past you don’t want to see keep appearing before you. Worse, it seems that the Doctor has some diabolical scheme against you… or does he? Survive the onslaught of horrific beasts, stay one step ahead of the Doctor, and for God’s sake William, get out if you can!

With all the surrounding insanity, you can’t tell if it’s you or the world that has truly lost it.

…Just how demented are you?

Hands On:
I’ve never experienced it myself (yet) but I don’t think it is good when they wake you and tell you that you have been out for several weeks after getting brain surgery.  Normally you would think that with experimental brain surgery they would let you wake up and check your functions, but with hospital overcrowding being what it is, they have two armed guards lift you up to take you back to your cell.  First thing you notice is the guards wear riot gear, the second thing you notice is the place is unsanitary and echoing with chaotic screams – not a clean hospital.  Welcome to Dementium II HD, turn out the lights, crank the sound or put on headphones and enjoy the ride.

Gameplay is pretty straight forward, control-wise, as a first-person shooter-esque title. By that, it feels like a survival horror game but they at least give you some weapons to defend yourself.  As you progress through the levels, the gameplay and puzzles get harder but, luckily, the weapons get better. Of course, you always have your trusty prison-style shank if things get up close and personal.  Being on Steam, there are also achievements for using certain weapons in certain ways so you may actually want to check them out before starting the game – if you care about them, as some get really specific.

The bad guys are overly-creepy right from the first time you fight one. A staple of the game are corpses with teeth in their chests (very reminiscent of John Carpenter’s The Thing) that just want to chomp down on you as they stumble toward you on stubby legs made out of metal. Each monster has its own sound, a kind of warning of what you will be up against and I particularly like this monster’s signature because it sounds like a miner working with a pickaxe (WoW crafting fans will recognize the sound quick).  There are plenty of different monsters, each with their own presence and attack types, and learning what works best with each enemy is an essential part of the game.  You may find that multiple weapons work well on an enemy but when you figure out the perfect match, your ammo and health will be better for it (Hint: Steam achievements do not necessarily match these).

Ammo and health have to be carefully monitored because, in standard survival horror fashion, part of the game is making the most of what you have. Save points are especially helpful, they can be used over again and recover your health but they overwrite the location’s previous save so make sure you haven’t made any bonehead mistakes since your last visit.  Make sure to scour maps because you never know where an antidote or weapons cache may be hidden.  Getting to certain areas requires the right tools but don’t worry about it the storyline keeps you heading around the map and if you can’t get in a room now there will probably be a reason to pass it once you are better equipped.

There are three levels of difficulty. Personally, I tend to stick with normal or hard because I am decent at puzzle solving (almost savant-like, I stop thinking and just solve it with Zen) and I am good at conserving ammo.  That doesn’t mean there weren’t a few times when my ammo was depleted on the weapon I had been using on an enemy only to have me switch to a different weapon and it work far better.  If you are a horror survival player and FPS go with normal or hard, if you are more interested in a creepy interactive story easy might be your path.  It is a very creepy and engaging storyline with the possibility of a faulty narrator, which is a fancy way of saying you don’t know what is real or just his messed-up brain.

This is truly horror survival too, there are countless graphic depictions of gore and torture so if younger or more sensitive members of the family are in town for the holidays, I suggest playing a different game until they go to bed.  Besides it is far better alone in the dark with such creepiness.

Last Call:
Dementium II HD is a terrific trip into the creepy world of insanity and all the horrors that come with it.  It’s nice to see a combining of survival horror with first person shooting so you can decide to run or stand your ground against the nastiness you encounter.  The puzzles are decent, the atmosphere is creepy and gory you never know what surprise waits for you around the corner, though if you listen carefully you might get a hint. It’s nice to be revisiting the Dementium world, especially at a time of year when most people think of Santa instead of creeps like Krampus.

Darkout Review (PC)

www.Darkoutgame.com_SCR001_s

Allgraff has finally released their newest game, named Darkout, on Steam. This release of Darkout is Stage One of the planned release schedule for content. Allgraff has a total of four stages planned currently, with each stage adding more content, story, and environments to add to the game. I was able to play the Darkout Beta version a while ago, and walked away from that experience disappointed but hopeful that the developers could fix the myriad of issues that I ran into during game play. With the Stage One release, I am happy to say that Darkout is mostly fixed, but still far from perfect. I was able to move beyond the tutorial with this release, so did get a lot more game time outside of the first area.

Story

The story for Darkout is much more fleshed out then it was in the beta, thanks to a new introductory cinematic. The cinematic shows a derelict space cruiser, in orbit around a darkened planet. Within the cruiser, there are signs of some sort of battle or catastrophic failure, which caused all but one of the escape pods to have been jettisoned. You are in the last pod, and as the cinematic closes, you are rocketing towards the dark planet.

Your character then begins their new life on this mysterious planet, with no resources save for what can be found in the escape pod or on the planet itself. The rest of the story currently is essentially created by you, the player. Currently, the story line feels structured more like Minecraft then Terreria, which this game is heavily influenced by. Stages 2-4 will be adding much more story line to Darkout, along with survivors to interact with.

The problem with this story telling model, is that you currently have no other objectives then to just survive. Once your home is built and you have the basic camp set up, you are just supposed to wander around a little aimlessly, gathering more materials to research more items. Players of the game know that more story will be coming, but will have to wait for it.

Darkout-Darkness1

Game Play

Darkout is heavily influenced by Terreria, from its two dimensional world all the way to how you interact with the world and build structures. The good news here is that Darkout is a much more good looking game then Terreria is, and is based more on science fiction survival then fantasy. Bottom line here though, folks, is that if you played Terreria then you are already know what to expect from Darkout.

Character creation is minimal at best. You select either Male or Female, then you select a color. I am still experiencing a bug that misplaces the type face for the color choices, but it is annoying at worst. You then get to select a world and then you are all set to begin the game. The tutorial is finally fixed and makes much more sense then it did in Beta. The tutorial explains how to interact with the world and sets you on your first job of gathering wood to make a home. Placing and picking up items in the world still feels hit or miss at this point, but are much easier to do then in the Beta. Yay for progress!

Darkout utilizes the same idea that Minecraft did in terms of enemies, the darker it is outside, the deadlier the world is. So light becomes imperative to protect yourself, not only in your home but as you are exploring the world around you. Torches not only serve to light your way, but they start off as your default melee weapon, with a pistol being your ranged option.

Darkout plays much more smoothly in the release version of the game then any other version I have played before. I finally feel that I can open doors, place objects, and pick up items more consistently then before. Currently, Stage One has a boss that the player can work towards defeating, and Allgraff will release a new boss for each stage of development. There is no current multiplayer for Darkout, but that is in the plans for Stage Two Alpha and hopefully to be released fully by Stage Three.

Aesthetics

Darkout is a much prettier version of Terreria, with the developers choosing not to go with a stylistic 8 bit feel, but a much more fleshed out and higher resolution game visual. Lighting is especially good looking in Darkout, and can be seen as the focus of the entire game. Enemies glow and they move through the world while plants off their own bio-luminescence to help light your path. It is very cool to be exploring a very dark cave, just to come across some soft, ambient lighting that is coming from some form of fauna at the bottom of the cavern.

We do need some more options for character creation, especially with the upcoming multiplayer that is planned. Currently, there are only two models, one male and one female, that you can choose from. There are a nice selection of colors that you can tint your suit with during creation, but the developers really need to come up with a plan to make sure the models look much more different before multiplayer.

The sound of Darkout is interesting, but not memorable. Allgraff says that there is voice acting in the game, but during my time with Darkout, the only thing that was voiced was the tutorial. Voice acting isn’t currently the most pressing problem that faces Darkout, since there isn’t anyone else right now to interact with, but hopefully as survivors are introduced this is something that becomes more prevalent to help the story along.

Final Thoughts

Darkout’s development seems to be the new way of how smaller, more independent companies are going to be making their games in the future. That is, by releasing a Beta version of the game and selling access to said beta, the developers are able to help fund the future of the product while allowing the community full access to what they have made and incorporating community ideas and suggestions into the final product. Minecraft, a game with a similar development cycle, is a monstrous hit and has proven that this type of development can work very well. I can already see much improvement between this version and the last Beta version that I played for our preview. Of course, this type of development means that the players must be much more patient for the complete experience, since content will still be released in stages. The Minecraft we play today is a much different experience then the one we played a year ago, and Darkout will be the same. Darkout is ultimately a very solid game that plays just like Terreria, but has the potential to be great as more of the content gets released in the future. Darkout Stage One is available now on Steam.

ROCCAT Releases Power-Grid Update

ROCCAT-Power-Grid_with-Dock_bg-blue1

Hamburg – December 20, 2013 – Today, Power-Grid will see its first major update since its launch back in October. With more than a quarter of a million downloads, the software has been very successful thus far: more than 1,000 positive ratings in the Apple and Google app stores and tons of user-created content on the Power-Grid website clearly show that the app satisfies gamers’ needs to connect their smartphone to their PC. With Power-Grid still being in beta status, ROCCAT aims for continuous improvement, based first and foremost on user feedback. “Running the open beta is very important for us”, says ROCCAT founder and CEO René Korte. “With this large user base we get way more feedback than we did in the closed beta. That makes it easier for us to focus on in-demand features that are beneficial to users, because more free Power-Grid content gets shared through our store”.

The recent update to Power-Grid contains new nice-to-have features as well as completely new code – making the software more useable and open overall.

With this recent update ROCCAT also officially releases the Power-Grid SDK. Professional developers and ambitious users are now able to create advanced Power-Grid content based on this documentation.

“Releasing the Ryos MK Pro Grid is the first step towards combining Power-Grid with ROCCAT hardware. You remember our Phobo keyboard concept? Well, we’ve been working on that and I can promise you a mind-blowing solution for 2014,” says René Korte.

Power-Grid v0.459 update details:

Auto updater: If there’s a new version of Power-Grid available, the PC host software now opens a small pop-up window when started to inform the user. The installation needs to be done manually.

Plug-in importer:  Plug-ins for Power-Grid allow users to create Grids with extended functionality and are also important for advanced gaming solutions (e.g. created with the Power-Grid SDK). The new version supports plugin import and export.

New home screen: The new Power-Grid home screen now allows for the user to navigate via tabs, before even connecting to the PC host software. It is now possible to browse through the latest Power-Grid and ROCCAT news, open the help section and view general information about the software.

Please check the change log for further details.

Additional Power-Grid content also available

With the new update to Power-Grid, users will also be able to take advantage of brand new, ROCCAT-created Grids for the app. The following Grids are now available:

– ROCCAT Track pad – Make your smartphone a laptop-like track pad for your PC
– ROCCAT Ryos Grid – Control eight amazing effects for the per-key illumination of the Ryos MK Pro mechanical gaming keyboard

Command Modern Air/Naval Operations Gets HUGE Update

command-title-screen

Arlington, VT, 20th December, 2013 – Since its release in September this year, Command Modern Air/Naval Operations (OUR REVIEW HERE) has been praised as a ‘rare thing’ (Rock Paper Shotgun), a ‘true gem’ (Gamers Hall) and ‘a seriously fun, intense, involving simulation of modern naval combat with nearly infinite replay value’ (Armchair General). For developers Warfare Sims (www.warfaresims.com) though, this wasn’t enough. The team engaged with the fans, involved the community and effectively started a brand new development process to take this immense project to perfection.

Since the release of v1.01 (which addressed the most immediate concerns WRT reliability/performance/functionality), the WS dev team has been relentlessly working on Command, as evidenced by the breakneck pace of private & public releases. The next official update, v1.02, incorporates myriads of improvements based directly on feedback from the entire wargaming community (customers, reviewers and prospective buyers alike).

With the release of v1.02, Command extends its lead against any other title in the genre (incl. longtime stalwarts of the niche) even more and further establishes itself as the undisputed heavyweight champion of modern air/nav wargaming. It was already a bargain, now it’s a screaming steal.

Improvements:

* VASTLY BETTER performance & stability, on all aspects of the game (startup, UI/map & simulation engine)

* VASTLY IMPROVED user interface with lots of new features, fixes & changes in every aspect (map, unit control, DB viewer etc.) straight from user feedback

* HUNDREDS of bugs & problems fixed

MORE POWERFUL scenario editor & mission editor

* MORE configurable realism options (e.g. unlimited aircraft weapons at bases) for people who want to quickly experiment

* MORE simulation realism with new features like variable crew proficiency, improved sonar modelling, more AI & doctrine options and other additions & fixes

* COUNTLESS database additions & tweaks

* IMPROVED & reworked versions of official scenarios

MORE scenarios, MORE DB images & descriptions

* IMPROVED multimedia experience with new sound effects & optional background music
