Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor’s Edge Review (Xbox 360)

Ninja-Gaiden-3-Razors-Edge-Gameplay-1-1024x576

Team Ninja has done it again by releasing an updated port of a previously released game in the Ninja Gaiden series.  Ninja Gaiden 3 was originally released in March of 2012, so it only took Team Ninja eight months to realize their mistakes and release Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor’s Edge for the Wii U as a launch title.  With an additional wait of five months, Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 owners can now get their hands on Razor’s Edge, but is it worth it?

Story:

The story for Razor’s Edge has not changed since the release of Ninja Gaiden 3.  You play as Ryu Hyabusa, the protagonist of the Ninja Gaiden franchise, as he is summoned by the Japanese Defense Force to help out with a terrorist attack in the heart of London.  The terrorists, a sect called the “Lords of Alchemy”, are specifically calling out for Ryu to make an appearance and save the British Prime Minister and his family.  With the aid of Mizuki McLoud, Ryu sets off for London to discover what connection the Lords of Alchemy has with himself.  Ryu faces the leader of the Lords of Alchemy in the Prime Minister’s mansion, and is subsequently defeated and cursed with the “Grip of Murder”.  The curse caused the Dragon Sword to become fused within Ryu’s right arm, and compels Ryu to murder others or he will die.  Barely escaping London with his life, Ryu learns that the Lords of Alchemy threaten the entire world with destruction unless each nation gives in to their demands.

Razor’s Edge also has a separate set of missions for Ayane to play through, that involves the return of the Black Spider Clan.  Ayane has a completely different set of moves for her missions, which adds much more replayabiltiy to the game.  Razor’s Edge also allows players to play as Kasumi and Momiji, which can be played in any part of the game.

If you played the original Ninja Gaiden 3, then there really isn’t anything new here story wise.  The story is fairly typical of Team Ninja, which means it does the job well without really becoming too memorable.  Team Ninja games have always had a particular feel to them for me.  The writing and story progression is very much their style for Razor’s Edge, which has never really made me feel like it was done superbly, but never left me with a bad taste in my mouth either.  If you are looking for something new story wise with Razor’s Edge, you will be disappointed.

Game play:

Since Razor’s Edge did nothing to update the story line for Ninja Gaiden 3, then it had to update the original’s game play.  Razor’s Edge brings in all of the downloadable content that was available for the original release of Ninja Gaiden, including all of the new weapons, challenges and costumes that could have been purchased.  This is a nice inclusion since the price for Razor’s Edge is already discounted from the original by twenty dollars.  You get a lot of content for less money, and that is always a good deal.  That is, if you don’t own Ninja Gaiden 3 already.  Well, what about those of you that did buy Ninja Gaiden 3 and all of the content for the game?  What has changed for you?  Not a whole lot from what I can tell.

Ninja Gaiden 3 was criticized for cutting down on the gore level, which made it feel less like a Ninja Gaiden game for many people.  Razor’s Edge brings the gore back, by the bucket load.  You are able to severe limbs off of the enemy soldiers, then continue to chop them into itty bitty pieces of flesh as the blood just splatters over everything in the vicinity.  Razor’s Edge also adds more weapons, skills, and abilities to the characters that you choose to play as.  This gives you much more ways to dismember your enemies and send them to their ancestors.

Razor’s Edge also is said to add improvements to the overall game play of Ninja Gaiden 3 by increasing the difficulty of the artificial intelligence of the enemies and by adding a new difficulty level to the challenges.  Coming from a person that has beaten the original Ninja Gaiden game for the NES, I found this game to be hard.  Really hard.  The developers know this too, or they wouldn’t give you the option to turn down the difficulty after you have died a number of times, which I, sadly, took that option just to beat the Regent of Masks in the Prime Minister’s home.

ninja-gaiden-3-razors-edge

Razor’s Edge shines in the game play department.  The game plays extremely tight and has the right improvements and balances once you have set the game to the level you are capable of playing.  One major critique that I have with Razor’s Edge is the camera during the fights.  A lot of the fights can get hectic in Razor’s Edge, and the camera has a nasty habit of being sucked into it’s own body if you get into the wrong place of the map.  Many times during the game, the camera would rotate on me, and I would get lost for a second, loosing precious moments as the enemies would begin hacking me to bits.  With a game that is already as hard as Razor’s Edge is, this just made the game much more frustrating for me.  It isn’t a deal breaker here, but it was a sore spot for me during this review.

Aesthetics:

Razor’s Edge has not been improved graphically over it’s predecessor.  It looks just as good as Ninja Gaiden 3 did on the Xbox 360.  The added gore factor for Razor’s Edge means that everything on your screen will eventually be coated in a nice layer of crimson, but other then that you get the same visual quality that the original had.  This goes  the same for the music and voice acting also.  Nothing has been changed in regards to sound between releases, except for the obvious adding voice overs for the new characters.  I consider the voice acting the same as I do about Team Ninja’s story writing, it does the job without being either bad nor good.  Team Ninja games have a particular feel for me, and Razor’s Edge feels exactly the same in regards to aesthetics that the rest of Team Ninja’s releases have.

Final Thoughts:

Razor’s Edge brings much more Team Ninja madness to Ninja Gaiden 3, and for less cash.  For $39.99, you receive the original release, all of the past downloadable content, three additional characters, more gore, and improved a.i. and game play.  If you did not get the original Ninja Gaiden 3 last year, Razor’s Edge is the copy that you need for that game.  Ninja Gaiden game releases are beginning to feel like a Peter Jackson Tolkien blu ray release, I know if I wait about six months after the release of the original game, I will be able to purchase the ultimate edition with all the added improvements and scenes that didn’t go into the first release.  Your purchase of Razor’s Edge will completely be decided on whether or not you own Ninja Gaiden 3.  I would recommend picking up this version over the original, as it has everything you could possibly want all in one package.

Dungeonland Screens and Update Details

02_-_handful_of_cards

NEW YORK — April 23, 2013 — Paradox Interactive, a publisher of games and a purchaser of souvenir photos, today released details on the evolution thus far of Dungeonland, the mostly-co-op action title from Critical Studio. Dungeonland, which has received a long list of gameplay tweaks and bizarre adventurer costumes since launch, continues to create DM tricks, silly costumes to force upon players’ hapless avatars, and a horde of behind-the-scenes tweaks on a regular basis. These alterations continue to lure unwary heroes inside the park where they will have so much fun that they won’t realize their best skills have been nerfed until it’s too late.

Dungeonland is a cooperative action game that sends three players to a theme park just for heroic adventurers, surviving relentless hordes of friendly staff and stealing loot from all of the gift shops. Since the game’s launch in early 2013, Dungeonland has been carefully altered and expanded by the Dungeon Maestro and his minions at Critical Studio.

“New language options, cheaper perks, Mimics who won’t bite you more than once each – it’s really amazing how much work goes into keeping my theme park open every day,” said the Dungeon Maestro, director of corporate defenestrations at Paradox Interactive. “I’ve even cut down on some of the grinding, so heroes can have their precious little abilities unlocked sooner. The actual grinder where I put their bodies, though, that part’s still there. I mean, can you imagine? Like I have room for all those corpses in here.”

Other additions include:

Strike Suit Infinity Announced

Strikesuit_Infinity_Logo_Final

Guildford, UK, April 23, 2013. — Today, development studio Born Ready Games has announced its latest addition to the Strike Suit universe, Strike Suit Infinity, which will be released for Windows PC on April 30, 2013. Strike Suit Infinity is a wave-based score-chaser that does not require the main game to play. Strike Suit Infinity combines all the combat skills and high-flying maneuvers players will have used in Strike Suit Zero and has been designed to provide endless challenge for competitive players through online leaderboards.

In Strike Suit Infinity, players fight to stay alive as long as possible against a never-ending armada of enemies, with the intention of surviving each round and climbing as high up the leaderboards as possible. Each round is comprised of numerous waves of enemies, which get progressively harder.
In order to reach the top of the leaderboard, players will need to successfully chain their scoring to increase their score multiplier. The multiplier will decay however, so players must maintain rhythm while quickly dispatching enemy ships.

In between rounds, players can use credits earned during combat to purchase reinforcements. Reinforcements range from Interceptors and Fighters all the way up to Cruisers and Frigates – challenging players to make strategic choices to get to the top of the leaderboard.

Strike Suit Infinity will be available via Steam on April 30 for $6.99 USD

Owners of Strike Suit Zero will be excited to learn that Born Ready Games will soon also release theHeroes of the Fleet mission pack DLC for the game. Further details on this pack will follow shortly.

Cloud Imperium Games Opens Santa Monica Office

cloud-imperium-banner1

SANTA MONICA, Calif., April 23, 2013 — Cloud Imperium Games™, led by legendary game designer Chris Roberts, has opened an office in Santa Monica to help create Roberts’ new space sim game, Star Citizen. The game marks Roberts’ return to the gaming industry and has garnered headlines in the last six months by bringing in more money via crowd funding than any other game to date. Cloud Imperium has raised more than $8.6 million since October of 2012 for the development of Star Citizen.

Roberts is best known for creating the hugely popular Wing Commander line of games in the 1990s. Those games sold millions of units worldwide and led to an animated television series, a feature film, a collectible card game and a series of novels and action figures. With Star Citizen Roberts wants to reinvigorate PC gaming and space sims in particular.

The new office in Santa Monica will be part of a distributed development approach for Star Citizen that spans from Montreal to Austin, Texas to the Los Angeles area. “I’m a big believer in utilizing small, very focused development groups,” says Roberts. “Each studio is working on key features of the game. In Santa Monica we’re working on some of the high-end creative elements, the structuring of our game engine and publishing. Other studios are working on technology, game design and production, customer support and web development.

“We couldn’t be more pleased with hanging our shingle up in Santa Monica. It’s an incredibly creative community here already with a lot of game development and art resources all around us. We’re reaching out to fill positions for the new office already.”

The office located in the Third Street Promenade area is 2900 square feet of space. Cloud Imperium plans on staffing with up to 20 people.

Nordic Games Picks Up Darksiders, Titan Quest, Red Faction, Others

Darksiders-Wii-U-feature-featured-image

VIENNA, AUSTRIA (23. April 2013) – Nordic Games announced today that it was one of the successful bidders in THQ´s auction process, which ended on April 15. Subject to approval of the bankruptcy court overseeing THQ’s case, Nordic Games will acquire more than 150 SKUs for a purchasing price of USD 4.9 million spanned across PC, Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony platforms.

This constitutes the biggest acquisition deal in the company history of Nordic Games so far. The acquisition is handled by Nordic Games Licensing AB, based in Karlstad, Sweden, whereas the day-to-day business (sales and distribution of said titles, evaluation of sequels & new content etc.) with the acquired portfolio will be conducted by Nordic Games GmbH, based in Vienna, Austria. The Vienna based business along with its North American sister company, Nordic Games NA Inc. already takes care of the previously acquired JoWooD and DreamCatcher IPs.

“First and foremost we are very happy about this deal which also turns over a new leaf for the entire Nordic Games Group. In the long term, we either want to cooperate with the original creators or best possible developers in order to work on sequels or additional content for these titles” comments Lars Wingefors, owner and CEO of Nordic Games Group AB. “A very important point for us is not to dash into several self-financed multi-million dollar projects right away, but rather to continue our in-depth analysis of all titles and carefully selecting different financing models for developing new instalments of acquired IPs.

“In August 2013, Nordic Games Vienna will have been in business for two very exciting and successful years, and this transaction takes us to new heights and challenges for the years to come” says Klemens Kreuzer, Managing Director at Nordic Games GmbH. “We gradually geared up our company over the years in terms of our overall online and boxed business, our range of platforms, and our headcount. This substantial increase of our games portfolio is the next step to maintain and strengthen our position across a wide range of digital platforms, licencing partners in emerging markets, and in our European and North American core markets” adds Reinhard Pollice, Business and Product Development Director at Nordic Games GmbH.

Nordic Games and THQ expect the US Bankruptcy Court to hear the motion for the sale on May 13, 2013 and to finalize the purchase transactions thereafter.

Nordic Games invites everybody who is interested to visit Nordic Games’ forums and openly discuss on how these titles should be moving forward: http://forum.nordicgames.at/forumdisplay.php?909-Discussion-about-THQ-IPs

KingsRoad Review (PC/Browser)

Just as they are celebrating 100,000 likes, we thought it a good time to talk about the Facebook browser launching game KingsRoad.  A dungeon crawler with surprisingly good graphics, it is definitely a game to consider.

Description:

KingsRoad sets a new standard for gaming on Facebook! Embark on a journey across the kingdom of Alderstone to reclaim your land from the monstrous creatures that threaten it.

• Engage in brutal real-time combat, explore a robust loot and skill system, and battle towering bosses – all rendered in stunning 3D graphics!
• Discover powerful new skills as a knight, archer, or wizard. Switch between classes at any time!
• Team up with friends for 3-player co-op and defeat the forces of darkness together!
• The first action-RPG that fits your schedule – giving you a truly epic experience every time you open your browser!

battling-commander-guradun

Hands On:

There are certain expectations someone goes into a browser game with. I try to forget those because we should just judge a game not by it’s platform but on the game itself.  That being said, when a game looks and acts much stronger than the platform it is on is known for producing, it should be recognized.  That is definitely the case with KingsRoad, which has all the sophistication and visual quality of a standalone PC video game – albeit in a Facebook browser game format.

It is a solid dungeon crawler with nods to all the famous ones from over the years, complete with crafting systems and armor modification.  It doesn’t really stand out from any of them in any particular way but it is a free browser based dungeon crawler and being able to play a Diablo like game on the go from any computer makes it stand out in its own way.  The animations of the creatures are done very well, the voice acting is excellent, and the gameplay is smooth and completely lacking in glitches.  KingsRoad is solidly built all around.

finally-he-is-gone

Now for the downside…  In these modern days, players have gotten used to, and accepted, free to play/pay to win as a gaming model that is here to stay.  Players decide how much a richer experience is worth to them and that is how much they invest in upping the quality of the game.  In some cases this means purchasing simply vanity items such as a special mount or pet or silly hat.  Then in other cases it means using real world money to get the best loots.  KingsRoad is definitely in this last category.  Opening chests in a dungeon crawler is a little like Christmas presents, you have waited to get to them and they often hold the best surprises and that is definitely true in KingsRoad.  Unfortunately those chests all cost gems, which can be earned VERY slowly through the game or purchased with real life money.  The chests can be as cheap as about 60 cents worth of real money or as expensive as over $10 each.  When you consider the best loots come from these and each section of dungeon has at least one of these this adds up incredibly quick.

area-map

Then there are the “buy now” pop ups that happen constantly throughout the game.  You get to a certain point and a pop up  shows up that says “Buy this great deal now for this many gems!  This is a one time offer, if you don’t buy it now you can’t later!”  These are great deals if you want to spend money but, if you don’t, you will wish you had what if offered soon enough.  Don’t worry though there will be another pop up soon to offer you something else for real world money.  Don’t have much time to play?  You can spend all your in-game gold to upgrade your smithing abilities only to find out it is going to take two and a half real world days before you can do that, unless you want to pay some real world money.  There’s a theme going here and honestly I am not against developers making money and I understand supporting a game through microtransaction funding.  There is a line where all the pop ups and real life money requests begin to detract from the game and it feels less like a game and more like an ad for a game and KingsRoad has done it more than any game I have seen.

defeated

Last Call:

If you are willing to pay plenty of money KingsRoad will be a great game to play, a standalone among browser based ones.  If you are broke this game can still be fun but you have to look past lots of ads and ignore the chests you see along the road, especially the really shiny ones because those are not for you.
