Knott’s 100th Anniversary Preview Night Rundown

Recently, we had the honor of attending the preview party for Knott’s Berry Farm’s 100th anniversary celebration. We arrived at Knott’s in the early evening and walked around the beautifully-decorated park, taking in the sights. Boysenberry-colored ribbons and bows adorn much of the pathways. Locations like the Gold Trails Hotel, Calico Saloon, and Calico Main Stage all looked stunning. After settling in, we watched an opening ceremony with clips of Knott’s memories as told by various celebrities, an intro from Jon Storbeck (the park president), and some reveals of various park characters to be found wandering the pathways during the 100th anniversary celebration. One minor mention from Storbeck was about Knott’s Merry Farm later this year, and gives us much hope that it will be proceeded by Knott’s Scary Farm!

🎃An aside as to the Scary Farm, several theme park blogs and YouTube channels have been showing video and photos of Knott’s Scary Farm mazes under construction. It stands to reason that the venerable haunt event will return this year – as to what extent, that remains to be seen, so stay tuned!🎃

After the presentation, we journeyed over to the Calico Mine Ride, followed by Knott’s Bear-y Tales: Return to the Fair. Bear-Y Tales: Return to the Fair is a 4D dark ride with shooting elements a la the Astro Blasters attraction at the “park down the street” and Knott’s previous attraction in the same location, Voyage to the Iron Reef. Bear-Y Tales: Return to the Fair takes a more whimsical foray into ride-shooters with guests lobbing blasts of boysenberry jam at those pesky Coyotes that try to ruin the fair and steal all the pies for themselves! The 3D video/glasses system in the ride is simply the best I have ever seen on a theme park ride – ever. The 3D is smooth and did not illicit any ill feelings while riding the attraction. The boysenberry blasters utilize a pull string system similar to Toy Story Midway Mania and, for the most part, worked well. There were a few times, however, that the interactive ride did not register my string pull. But, I digress, as the overall ride experience more than made up for it.

Still… And I am about to digress yet again, part of me wishes that Knott’s had gone all-in on making an entirely new Bear-Y Tales experience with real, physical animatronics, and sets. More and more, theme parks are opting for projection effects, 3D ride video, and other gimmicks which take away from the craftsmanship of practical, in-your-face characters and theming. Now that I’ve come off sounding like some crochety old timer complaining about “Back in my day…”, it’s back to our event experience!

After riding the two attractions, we headed out to find some of the various good eats available to park guests. I think my favorite of the night had to be the fried chicken sandwich. The catch is, instead of bread or buns, they use Krispy Kreme-style donuts! It was sweet, salty, and savory. The boysenberry funnel cake was, of course, outstanding (Knott’s is well-known for its special funnel cake recipe), and we had some great pulled pork and chicken over at the Boardwalk BBQ. The boysenberry cider was still incredible (it’s the same recipe as sampled in their previous tasting event) and, overall, Knott’s is bringing out some great food for the celebration. Additionally, Knott’s has brought back its Knott’s Summer Nights event, which sees various musical performers and Dj’s entertain guests on select evenings.

Scattered throughout the park, you’ll find some very cool photo opportunities based on various Knott’s attractions of yesteryear. Attractions such as the parachute ride, Soap Box Racers, Haunted Shack, and a lot more. Each photo op has its own gimmick – like the Soap Box Racers photo op featuring racers you can sit in, or the Haunted Shack featuring one of the attractions illusions. They even brought out the full-size, lit-up letter “K” sign that used to adorn the Sky Tower before being replaced by a more modern version with LEDs. It’s a great nod to the past and provides guests with even more enjoyment – especially those guests old enough to remember the original attractions!

Overall, the “Knott’s 100th Anniversary: A Knott’s Family Reunion” celebration is an outstanding way to get back into theme parks now that the light is at the end of the COVID tunnel. The rides are as great, food is fantastic, and entertainment – well – entertaining. The celebration runs until September 6th, so head over to Knott’s official website for more information.

Grand Casino Tycoon Out Now

Do you have what it takes to design, build, and manage a successful casino? It’s not as simple as it sounds! Try your own hand at the casino game in Grand Casino Tycoon, now available on Windows PC via Steam! Aerosoft, a prolific publisher of best-selling simulation titles, and developer stillalive studios are inviting players to take on the role of a virtual Sam “Ace” Rothstein as they bring to life their vision for the ultimate casino from blueprint to the strip — designing, building, and operating a deluxe house ‘o cards so magnificent, so opulent, and so enticing that everyone from wannabe cardsharps to billionaire CEOs will want to walk through the doors and empty their pockets.

“Grand Casino Tycoon is inspired by classics of the genre, but we’ve taken things in a new direction with all sorts of fresh and fun mechanics,” said Winfried Diekmann, CEO of Aerosoft. “It’s still a game about building a business, but with some original strategy and humorous elements sure to keep players coming back for more.”

“We set out to make a title that took all the popular tropes of the tycoon genre — planning, building, and operating a business — but that was also funny and endearing,” said Julian Mautner, CEO of stillalive studios. “These extra elements of humor and fun characters add an entertaining layer to a deep ‘observe-and-adapt’ business management sim. They created Grand Casino Tycoon.”

The casino business is about one thing and one thing only: lining your suit pockets with wads of sweet, sweet hard-earned cash. But not your hard-earned cash, of course. In order to do this, you’ll need to plan out the perfect casino floor. Make sure there are plenty of shiny, exciting slot machines for your less… wealthy patrons, along with a bar and some easy access snacks. The real money comes with the VIP guests: professional players, billionaire CEOs, and the occasional secret agent. Entice them to drop some dough by building the more traditional casino table games like roulette, blackjack, and…you guessed it…poker! Keep ‘em spending with a constant supply of fancy cocktails and energized by delicious meals from top-quality chefs. However, don’t forget to utilize all your security options to keep ‘em from collecting too many chips — the House always wins, after all.

Grand Casino Tycoon Key Features:

  • Plan, Build, Manage: The classic tycoon formula will task players with overseeing every step of the process, from designing the layout to monitoring the day-to-day activities
  • Players Gonna Play: Everyone wants to win, but preferences will vary. Ensure a successful business by catering to every level of customer: slot machines for the basic bunch, craps and blackjack for the high-flyin’ elite — there’s something for everyone in between!
  • Big Brother is Watching: Use security cams, pit bosses, and other manipulation tactics to keep a close eye on who is playing, but more importantly, who is winning
  • Two Different Modes: Not everyone wants to play in the cutthroat world of the Vegas strip; Grand Casino Tycoon offers two modes of play so that everyone can enjoy the experience the way they want: Campaign
  • Mode and Custom Casino Mode

Published by Aerosoft and developed by stillalive studios, Grand Casino Tycoon is now available for Windows PC via Steam for $24.95 USD with a special limited-time -20% new release discount.

CATAN – 3D Edition Announced

Today, CATAN Studio and Asmodee announced the forthcoming release of CATAN – 3D Edition, a premium game that showcases the iconic CATAN game in all its three-dimensional glory. CATAN – 3D Edition can be preordered at CatanShop.com. The MSRP of CATAN – 3D Edition is $300 USD.

The island of Catan rises up from the table for an immersive game experience like no other. Settlements grow up from fertile grain fields and cities nestle into the sides of majestic mountains. You can almost hear the sheep baa-ing in their pastures.

This long-awaited 3D Edition of the contemporary classic board game CATAN is based on terrain tiles that were hand sculpted by the game designer Klaus Teuber himself. All of the terrain is hand painted for stunning color, and intricately designed player pieces are antiqued for a look that is full of history and character.

“CATAN – 3D Edition is the product of years of diligent effort and attention to detail,” said Pete Fenlon, CEO of CATAN Studio. “Our goal was to create a durable premium product that not only looks beautiful on a game table, but that also creates a visually stunning foundation for immersive storytelling.”

This is not the first time a 3D version of CATAN has been released. In 2005, a special collector’s 3D edition of what was then called The Settlers of Catan was released. Ever since, the growing popularity and reach of the game has increased fan demand for a new 3D edition.

“The gaming hobby has grown by leaps and bounds since the last time we released a 3D edition more than 15 years ago,” Fenlon said. “There is a whole new generation of players who have been eagerly awaiting this game. Using refined designs and improved technology, we’re thrilled to finally be able to share it with them.”

CATAN – 3D Edition Contains:

  • Hand-painted 3D terrain hex tiles, sea frames, and harbor markers
  • Antiqued 3D player pieces in four colors
  • Antiqued robber figure
  • Card sorting trays
  • Custom CATAN dice

RIG PRO Compact Xbox Controller Review

Recently, we got the chance to check out one of the new RIG PRO Compact Xbox Controllers from NACON Gaming. The RIG PRO Compact Controller came about in order to provide gamers with a slightly smaller, more portable, and (hopefully), more comfortable controller. Did they succeed? Sort of! Read on to find out more about this new controller.

Starting off with the RIG PRO Compact Xbox Controller’s design, it features a slim profile with narrow D-pad and lighter weight by about 85 grams! It’s noticeably lighter, actually, so if the weight of the standard Microsoft controller is too much for you, you might like the RIG PRO Compact Controller.

Unfortunately, RIG has made a couple poor decisions in its redesigning the button and control layout in their new controller. The one that takes the most getting used to is the placement of the start and menu buttons. Instead of being close to the Xbox button like on the standard controllers, they spread them to above the analog sticks on opposite sides of the controller. This really threw my gameplay off and I fought to remember where they were when needed. A second issue that popped up is how its small size and curves force your hands into a semi-uncomfortable position when being held – it’s like they expect you to hold it in half your grip which doesn’t feel very natural. The position they put your hands in also makes it difficult to reach the bumper buttons without readjusting one’s grip.

What does work with the RIG PRO Compact Xbox Controller? Well, for one thing, it has terrific analog sticks with great tension and sensitivity. Furthermore, the texturing on the analog sticks is outstanding and should be implemented on the standard controller from Microsoft. Also, the trigger controls work very well and the built in haptic feedback motor provides great response and rumble – even better than the standard Xbox controller.

The cord is made from a braided cable and is long enough to reach from the Xbox to the couch. Also, its configuration software is well-done, allowing the controller to be (somewhat) remapped as well as the sensitivity curves on the sticks and triggers. This app is available on both the Xbox as well as the Microsoft Store on PC, so you have access to it either way.

One of the big selling points of the RIG PRO Compact Xbox Controller is that it includes a lifetime license key for Dolby Atmos – a first for a controller like this. If you have ever used Dolby Atmos before, you know how great it is in making even basic headphones sound like a surround sound system. While this is not a review of Dolby Atmos specifically, it’s a great technology and a nice little bonus for buyers of the controller.

Overall, the RIG PRO Compact Xbox Controller does provide the functionality of a wired Xbox controller in a smaller package. However, there are some design issues which might make it a difficult transition. It does retail for $49.99, which means it is very affordable and might make for a great choice if you have smaller-than-average hands.

WRC 10 Croatia Rally Gameplay Trailer

NACON and KT Racing are pleased to unveil some new gameplay images for WRC 10, the official video game of the FIA World Rally Championship, which releases on 2 September 2021 on PlayStation®4, PlayStation®5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and Steam.

As we celebrate the Croatia Rally’s very first appearance in the Championship calendar, it may already be regarded as one of the most exciting events in WRC history. Contested a few weeks ago, a WRC asphalt rally has never been so close with just six tenths of a second separating the winner, Sébastien Ogier, from Welshman Elfyn Evans.

And now these breathtaking performances can be recreated by virtual drivers in September in WRC 10. The Croatia Rally takes place entirely on asphalt on very varied surfaces that are often rutted and damaged from the region’s bad weather. These roads in the heart of the Croatian countryside are often extremely narrow and require immaculate handling to maintain speed. Thanks to the ultra-realistic physics developed by KT Racing, WRC 10 offers a unique driving experience in 4K and 60FPS that closely matches what real drivers feel. Follow in the tracks of the greatest drivers and become the next legend with WRC 10!

With WRC 10, the leading off-road racing simulator is reinventing itself once more! Finish the 2021 season atop the podium and relive the most intense moments at the wheel
of iconic cars to celebrate 50 years of the competition.

  • 6 historic rallies, including Acropolis, San Remo, Germany, Argentina…
  • Over 20 legendary cars, including Alpine, Audi, Lancia, Subaru, Ford, Mitsubishi, Toyota…
  • 4 brand-new rallies: Estonia, Croatia, Belgium and Spain
  • 52 official teams of the 2021 season (WRC, WRC2, WRC3, Junior WRC)

WRC 10 will be available on September 2, 2021 on PlayStation®4, PlayStation®5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PC and on Nintendo Switch™ at a later date.
