No Avengers? No Problem: Why San Diego Comic-Con 2025 Was the Best in Years

Leading up to SDCC 2025, the headlines were screaming doom and gloom. “No Marvel in Hall H?” “DC Studios sitting out?” It felt like the sky was falling. For a decade, the rhythm of this convention has been dictated by Kevin Feige wearing a baseball cap and announcing movies that won’t come out until my future kids are in college. Without that anchor, I honestly thought we were looking at a ghost town. But walking out of the San Diego Convention Center on Sunday, sunburnt, exhausted, and clutching a custom King of the Hill trucker hat like it was the Holy Grail, I realized something.

The sky didn’t fall. In fact, this might have been the best San Diego Comic-Con in years!

Here’s the thing: SDCC 2025 wasn’t about staring at a big screen in a dark room for four hours. It was about being there. It was the year the convention finally spilled out of Hall H and turned the entire Gaslamp District into a living, breathing theme park.

The Hall H Pivot (Or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Xenomorph)

Let’s address the elephant in the room – or rather, the lack of Avengers in the room. Marvel sat this one out. Well, mostly. Robert Downey Jr. was practically trolling us from his Instagram feed all weekend with Doctor Doom hints, but he wasn’t on stage.

And honestly? It was refreshing.

Instead of a conveyor belt of logo reveals, we got depth. Saturday in Hall H felt like a film school masterclass. When George Lucas walked out, his first time ever at the con, the air just left the room. Seeing the creator of Star Wars sitting there, talking about narrative art with Guillermo del Toro? That’s not hype. That’s historic. You could hear a pin drop. It was emotional in a way that a trailer for Avengers 17 never could be.

But the real “I was there” moment came from FX. Noah Hawley didn’t just bring a teaser for Alien: Earth. He walked out and played the entire pilot episode. Just dropped it on us. The show is set in 2120, grounded, gritty – proper horror. Watching a room of 6,000 people collectively realize they were seeing something no one else in the world had seen yet? That energy is unmatched and definitely one of my favorite SDCC moments ever.

The Gaslamp Events

If you stayed inside the convention center all weekend, you did it wrong. This year, the studios realized that buying our attention is expensive, but earning our memories is priceless.

The undisputed champion of the weekend was PeaceFest.

HBO Max took over the Nova Nightclub and turned it into a glam-rock dive bar from an alternate dimension where Peacemaker is a festival organizer. It sounds ridiculous because it was. You walk through a “Quantum Unfolding Chamber” (fancy light tunnel, but it worked), and suddenly you’re drinking hard tea while a hair metal cover band screams Ozzy Osbourne covers.

And they had a live eagle. A real eagle. I don’t know who signed off on the insurance for that, but I salute them.

What made it work wasn’t the spectacle, though. It was the chill factor. They let us hang out for 45 minutes. Usually, these activations herd you through like cattle – get your photo, get your swag, get out. PeaceFest let us actually party. It felt less like marketing and more like a Saturday night out in the DC Universe.

Paramount brought out “The Lodge” where you could not only grab sliders but also get a custom-made Star Trek inspired cocktail as well as take some great pictures at their assorted photo opps.

Propane and Propane Accessories

On the complete opposite end of the spectrum, Hulu won my heart with Hank’s Backyard.

They terraformed a parking lot into Arlen, Texas. It was simple: lawn chairs, fencing, and a propane grill. I played “Alamo Pong” using trash cans and giant balls, which is way harder than it looks, by the way.

The best part? The swag station. Instead of handing out generic posters that end up crumpled in your hotel room, they let us customize trucker hats with patches. I waited in line for maybe twenty minutes, drinking “Alamo Beer” (which was just canned water, but let me have my fantasy), and made a “Dale’s Dead Bug” hat that I have not taken off since.

It was tactile. It was comfortable. It was exactly what you needed after walking ten miles in cosplay boots.

When Immersion Gets Scary (and Messy)

Not everything was a home run, though. FX’s Alien: Earth activation, “The Wreckage,” was visually insane. They built a crashed spaceship site next to the Hilton that looked movie-set ready, dripping with black goo and smoke.

I went through during the day, and it was… fine? A bit of a confusing maze. But I heard the “Code: Red” night mode was terrifying. The actors turned the aggression up to eleven, and the lighting did a lot of heavy lifting. My big regret of this year’s con is that I didn’t get the chance to do the night event.

Then there was the Twisted Metal bumper cars. Yes, Peacock let us drive bumper cars dressed up like Sweet Tooth’s ice cream truck. It was chaotic fun, especially when Anthony Mackie showed up and started handing out PS5s to random people. Talk about a lottery ticket.

But we gotta talk about the Sonic Racing event at K1 Speed. Great idea: Sonic-themed go-karts. Execution? Oof. I heard horror stories of people waiting two and a half hours for food orders. It’s a reminder that no matter how cool the IP is, logistics are the real final boss of Comic-Con.

The Vibe Shift

Walking down 5th Avenue this year felt different. With the big superhero movie machine taking a breather, other fandoms stepped up.

The cosplay was fascinating. You couldn’t walk five feet without bumping into a group of four people in blue jumpsuits – the Fantastic Four hype is real, even without a panel. And Wicked? Everywhere. I saw at least three pairs of Elphabas and Glindas holding hands near the convention center steps.

Japanese gaming also had a huge moment. Western devs were quiet, so Bandai Namco and Sega just owned the floor. There was this life-size motorcycle from Code Vein II at Lou & Mickey’s that people were lining up just to sit on. It’s cool seeing gaming take up space that used to be reserved for Hollywood blockbusters.

And I have to give a shoutout to barleymash. They rebranded the whole restaurant as a “Retired Video Store” (think Blockbuster). I ordered a “Make it a Blockbuster Night”, bourbon and peach, and it came with a Red Vine straw. It’s cheesy, sure, but that’s why we come here! We want the cheese!

The Verdict

So, was SDCC 2025 a “quiet” year?

No way! It was a decentralized year.

We’ve spent so long thinking that Comic-Con is defined by what announcements come out of Hall H. But this year proved that the soul of the con isn’t in the press releases. It’s in the streets. It’s in eating BBQ in a fake Texas backyard, listening to hair metal in a fake dive bar, and getting scared by a fake alien in a hotel parking lot.

The big studios might have taken a break from the megaphone, but the culture didn’t skip a beat. If this is the future of SDCC—less staring, more doing—then sign me up for 2026.

Just remind me to bring better shoe inserts next time. My feet are never going to forgive me.

Halloween Horror Nights Reveals Five Nights at Freddy’s and WWE Presents: The Horrors of The Wyatt Sicks

Halloween Horror Nights awakens two iconic franchises in all-new terrifying haunted houses inspired by the blockbuster film Five Nights at Freddy’s and WWE’s legendary The Wyatt Sicks. The horror kicks off at Universal Orlando Resort on Friday, August 29 and at Universal Studios Hollywood on Thursday, September 4.

Five Nights at Freddy’s

Guests will fight to survive as they venture through an all-new haunted house inspired by the 2023 hit film Five Nights at Freddy’s, Blumhouse’s highest-grossing movie to date and an adaptation of the horror videogame phenomenon.

Guests will follow in the footsteps of Mike, who was recently fired and desperate for work so that he can keep custody of his little sister, after he accepts a position as a night security guard in an abandoned themed entertainment center: Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria. The terror will start as guests navigate the corridors and learn that nothing at Freddy’s is what it seems when they encounter the supernatural and become lured into the black heart of an unspeakable nightmare.

The journey will bring guests face-to-face with full-scale replicas of the eerie characters from the film—Freddy Fazbear, Chica, Bonnie, Foxy, and Mr. Cupcake—as they stalk visitors through iconic scenes, including the security room and the showroom where the chilling characters performed. The larger-than-life characters for the haunted houses were created in collaboration with Jim Henson’s Creature Shop, who also masterfully produced the animatronics and corresponding costumes for the fan-favorite film.

WWE Presents: The Horrors of The Wyatt Sicks

Guests will be immersed in the world of WWE in the bi-coastal haunted houses “WWE Presents: The Horrors of The Wyatt Sicks,” where they will go head-to-head with Uncle Howdy in an experience that not only features The Wyatt Sicks but honors the legacy of Bray Wyatt. The group derives from the creative mind of Bray Wyatt and was resurrected in 2024 by his brother Bo Dallas, also known as Uncle Howdy – the fearless leader of The Wyatt Sicks. The chilling crew of five has quickly emerged as one of the most disturbing and disruptive groups in WWE history with its ominous presence and portrayal of dark and twisted characters – all of which will come to life at Halloween Horror Nights this fall.

Horror fans brave enough to travel through the light of the lantern will find themselves transported into the maniacal minds of The Wyatt Sicks, where each member reigns supreme within their own horrific domains. There, Uncle Howdy together with Ramblin Rabbit, Mercy the Buzzard, Abby the Witch and Huskus the Pig will be waiting to take bloody retribution on a world that has abandoned them. Along the way, guests will be stalked by the eerie presence of The Fiend, Bray’s sadistic alter ego, who looms within the shadows and beckons them to let him in.

Razer BlackShark V3 Pro Review: A Home Office Warrior’s Perspective

As a gamer who has been navigating virtual worlds for the better part of three decades, my priorities have shifted. The flashing lights and aggressive aesthetics that once seemed essential have given way to a desire for performance, comfort, and, most importantly, focus. My gaming rig is tucked away in a home office, a space that is rarely as quiet as I’d like. Between the hum of the air conditioner, the distant sounds of family life, and the general background noise of a household, creating an immersive gaming sanctuary can be a challenge. It was with this mindset that I approached the new Razer BlackShark V3 Pro, a headset with a legendary lineage that now promises the one feature I’ve been craving most: active noise cancellation.

From the moment I unboxed it, the V3 Pro felt familiar, yet refined. It retains the classic aviation-style design that has defined the BlackShark series, a look I’ve always found more purposeful and less ostentatious than many of its competitors. Razer hasn’t reinvented the wheel here, but the small improvements are noticeable. The yokes connecting the earcups to the headband feel sturdier than in previous generations, and they now offer about 15 degrees of swivel, a subtle change that makes a significant difference in finding a comfortable, conforming fit. The large, textured volume knob on the left earcup is a brilliant tactile touch, easy to find and adjust without fumbling mid-game.

Comfort, for me, is non-negotiable during long sessions, and the V3 Pro largely delivers. Razer has employed a clever hybrid design for the ear cushions, combining a leatherette base for a solid seal with a soft, breathable cloth top layer. The result is excellent passive noise isolation without the sweaty, sticky feeling that full leatherette cups can produce. At 367 grams, it’s not the lightest headset on the market, but the weight is well-balanced, and the clamping force feels secure without being vice-like. My only minor gripe is with the headband; while padded, it could use just a bit more cushioning to completely eliminate any feeling of pressure on the crown of my head during multi-hour raids.

The headline feature, for my purposes, is the Active Noise Cancellation. Toggled by a dedicated button on the right earcup, the ANC is surprisingly effective for a gaming headset. It excels at eliminating the low-frequency, constant drones that plague my office—the whir of computer fans, the hum of the AC, the low rumble from the dishwasher down the hall. It creates a bubble of focus that is genuinely transformative for immersion. While it won’t completely silence a sudden, sharp noise or a nearby conversation quite like a high-end set of Bose or Sony cans, it’s a massive value-add that puts it a step above most of its gaming-focused rivals.

The core of any gaming headset is its audio performance, and this is where the BlackShark V3 Pro truly asserts its dominance. The headset is equipped with new 50mm TriForce Bio-Cellulose drivers. This advanced diaphragm material is thinner and more rigid than traditional designs, which translates into an astonishingly powerful and clean sound profile. The bass response is where you first notice the difference; it’s deep, impactful, and textured without ever becoming muddy or overwhelming the other frequencies. In action-heavy titles, every explosion and ground-shaking impact is delivered with cinematic force.

This low-end prowess is perfectly balanced with crystal-clear mids and highs, creating a wide, detailed soundscape. Positional audio is exceptionally precise. Thanks to the PC-specific THX Spatial Audio, which creates a convincing 7.1.4 virtual surround sound environment, I could pinpoint the direction of enemy footsteps, reloads, and distant gunfire with unnerving accuracy. The only slight blemish on its otherwise stellar audio report is a touch of sharpness in the upper treble. In certain situations, sounds like shattering glass or specific high-pitched weapon effects can come across as a bit shrill, though this was easily tamed with a quick adjustment in Razer’s Synapse software.

Connectivity is another area where Razer has clearly listened to feedback. The primary connection for any serious PC gamer is the new HyperSpeed Wireless Gen-2 dongle. It achieves a blistering 10ms latency, a figure so low that the connection is indistinguishable from a wired one. The dongle itself is a bit unusual, requiring a USB cable to connect to your PC rather than plugging in directly, which feels a bit clunky but does allow you to position it for optimal signal strength. The addition of simultaneous Bluetooth 5.3 is a fantastic quality-of-life feature, allowing me to take a quick call on my phone without ever losing game audio.

And then there’s the microphone. In a world of tinny, compressed headset mics, the BlackShark V3 Pro’s new detachable 12mm microphone is a revelation. With a sampling rate of up to 48kHz, it captures voice with a richness and clarity that is genuinely broadcast-grade. My teammates on Discord immediately commented on the difference, noting my voice sounded more natural and present than ever before. Its only minor weakness is that it isn’t the best at rejecting background noise, so a particularly loud mechanical keyboard might still be audible, but my voice always remained front and center.

The Razer BlackShark V3 Pro is a masterclass in iteration. It takes a beloved design and enhances it with meaningful, practical upgrades. For a gamer like me, who values performance and immersion above all else, it’s nearly perfect. The powerful, precise audio, the lag-free wireless connection, the outstanding microphone, and the genuinely useful active noise cancellation combine to create a premium experience that justifies its price tag. It has successfully turned my sometimes-chaotic home office into a dedicated gaming cockpit, and for that, it has earned a permanent place on my desk.

The Razer BlackShark V3 Pro retails for $249.99 and is available now!

Overall Score 5 out of 5

Pros:

  • Phenomenal audio quality
  • Best-in-class wireless performance
  • Broadcast-grade detachable microphone
  • Effective Active Noise Cancellation (ANC)
  • Comfortable, breathable hybrid earcups

Cons:

  • Microphone could reject a bit more background noise but I’m nitpicking

The Temple of Elemental Evil Coming Soon to Steam

Today, SNEG, Ltd., curator and publisher of treasured classic PC games, is using its Scroll of Sending to share exciting news about another new release in its catalog of classic DUNGEONS & DRAGONS games for PC. This time, it’s The Temple of Elemental Evil: A Classic Greyhawk Adventure, set for release on Steam this September. Based on the iconic and genre-defining DUNGEONS & DRAGONS tabletop adventure of the same name, and using the 3.5 edition of the tabletop ruleset coupled with intense tactical combat, The Temple of Elemental Evil challenges adventurers to explore the titular temple, facing off against monsters and cultists while dealing with four elemental-themed factions who are at war with one another!

The Temple of Elemental Evil was first released in 2003 and has since garnered a passionate community around it. Over the years, fans have added a lot to the game and kept it alive in ways we really admire. This version builds on that work, and we’re genuinely thankful to everyone who’s helped along the way.
An evil demoness founded a cult dedicated to exploring evil in its most elemental forms. This cult was based in a temple just outside the village of Hommlet in a vile shire known as Nulb. Soon, this cult ruled the region with tyranny; times of chaos and violence ensued. Hard-fought battles were waged and the war was eventually won by the good armies of nearby lands. The temple was razed, the villains were imprisoned, and order was restored. The temple itself faded into distant memory…until now.

Elgato Unveils Facecam 4K Webcam

Elgato, a CORSAIR® brand, today announced Facecam 4K, the latest addition to its webcam lineup. Featuring a robust sensor and advanced image processor, Facecam 4K captures Ultra HD video at 60 frames per second, twice the frame rate of competing webcams. It includes Camera Hub software, where creators can tune their look with DSLR-style control and a suite of cinematic effects, such as LUTs. It’s also the first webcam to support lens filters—like those found in photography and film—expanding creative possibilities. With results rivaling many professional cameras, Facecam 4K proves that incredible video no longer requires an elaborate setup.

Elgato Facecam4K Image2

“Back in 2022, we engineered the world’s first 4K60 webcam,” said Julian Fest, General Manager at Elgato. “Facecam 4K builds on this technology with better image quality and more creative control, at a price more people can afford. What once cost thousands of dollars in camera gear now sits comfortably on your monitor.”

Not all 4K is created equal

Inside Facecam 4K, light flows through a pipeline of professional-grade components, emerging milliseconds later as refined video.

Light first enters its Prime Lens, designed to maintain sharpness up to 1.2 m, with a full 90-degree field of view. It’s captured by a 1/1.8″ SONY® STARVIS 2 sensor, then converted into an electric signal with exceptional detail and color accuracy. A state-of-the-art image processor handles everything from encoding to noise reduction, turning raw sensor data into polished video. It’s all delivered from camera to computer with zero compression*, preserving every little detail and reducing latency.

*When connected by USB 3.0, up to 2160p30

Elgato Facecam4K Image3

By maximizing quality at each step, Facecam 4K can deliver video that looks true-to-life at any scale, even zoomed in or up on big-screen TVs.

Beyond the hardware

Elgato’s Camera Hub app takes Facecam 4K from excellent to extraordinary, letting creators achieve the DSLR-like look they’re after.

With manual ISO and shutter-speed settings, users can dial in exposure like a professional camera. PTZ controls let them pan or tilt freely around their scene, then zoom in digitally while staying remarkably sharp. In-app LUTs make pro color grading effortless, with curated presets and a growing collection on Elgato Marketplace. NVIDIA RTX users can even apply realistic background blur, for that signature DSLR depth-of-field effect. Additional features like advanced noise reduction and HDR round out a comprehensive toolset rarely found in webcams.

Elgato Facecam4K Image4

With a few simple tweaks, creators can unlock Facecam 4K’s full potential, for results that rival many professional cameras at a fraction of the cost.

Filters come to webcams

Lens filters have been essential tools in filmmaking and photography for over a century. Now Facecam 4K brings this capability to webcams, supporting 49-mm lens filters. For the first time, users can apply cinematic styling like diffusion and starburst, or even reduce the reflections off glasses with CPL filters. From streak effects to extreme close-ups, filters open up a world of creative possibilities, previously only possible with a professional camera.

Elgato Facecam4K Image5

To celebrate the launch, Elgato is offering a free CPL filter with Facecam 4K orders via their webstore. Beyond this, creators can attach any 49-mm filter they might already own or purchase elsewhere.

Availability

Customers can order Facecam 4K starting today on elgato.com and at authorized retailers in CORSAIR’s global network.

Razer Launches New BlackShark V3 Pro Lineup

Razer™, the leading global lifestyle brand for gamers, today announced the launch of the Razer BlackShark V3 Pro lineup — an evolution of its iconic esports headset series. Designed for peak competitive performance, the new lineup includes platform-optimized models for PC, PlayStation®, and Xbox, each delivering ultra-low latency wireless audio, crystal-clear voice communication, and tailored sound tuning.

“The BlackShark series has long been a trusted choice among competitive gamers,” said Jeffrey Chau, Global Esports Director at Razer. “With the BlackShark V3 Pro line, we’ve refined the essentials — sound quality, comfort, and noise isolation — based on direct feedback from esports professionals. Now, with the fastest wireless performance and ultra-low latency audio, every detail is tuned to meet the demands of today’s top players, delivering the clarity, speed, and focus they need to perform at their best.”

Engineered for Competitive Precision

Originally introduced in 2012 for competitive Battlefield play, the BlackShark quickly earned a reputation for tournament-grade reliability. As of July 2025, the BlackShark V2 Pro ranks as the #1 Headset on ProSettings. The new BlackShark V3 Pro builds on that legacy with next-generation features designed for elite esports athletes.

  • Razer HyperSpeed Wireless Gen-2 for Ultra-Low Latency

The BlackShark V3 Pro is the first wireless gaming headset headset to feature Razer’s Gen-2 HyperSpeed Wireless technology, delivering industry-leading, ultra-responsive audio with latency as low as 10 milliseconds. This represents a 33% reduction compared to the 15 ms latency found in top competing headsets, giving players a decisive edge in fast-paced competitive scenarios where every millisecond counts.

  • Razer HyperClear Full Band Mic for Pro-Level Communication Communication is critical in esports. The detachable 12 mm microphone offers studio-grade voice capture with a professional-level sampling rate of 48 kHz and a unidirectional pickup pattern — ensuring players are heard clearly, even in the heat of battle.
  • Hybrid Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) for Total Focus

For the first time in the BlackShark series, the BlackShark V3 Pro features advanced hybrid ANC powered by a 4-microphone system that intelligently filters out ambient noise. Combined with memory foam ear cushions and a closed-back design, the esports wireless headset helps players maintain focus in any environment.

  • Next-Gen Razer TriForce Bio-Cellulose Drivers for Crisp Audio

Gen-2 TriForce 50 mm drivers with ultra-thin bio-cellulose diaphragms deliver cleaner, more natural sound and sharper frequency separation for precise in-game audio cues. A redesigned driver plug reduces harmonic distortion by 50%, ensuring crisp clarity, while a 75% increase in magnet field strength enhances spatial accuracy for pinpoint detection of enemy movement.

  • THX® Spatial Audio with 7.1.4 Surround Sound (PC only)

THX Spatial Audio expands the vertical soundstage by adding four virtual overhead speakers to content that supports 7.1.4 channels on PC. This creates a more precise and layered sound environment, enabling gamers to locate audio cues not only around them but also above. The result is precise positional audio and greater directionality in supported games and media. The BlackShark V3 Pro is the first product to feature this new THX Spatial Audio configuration.

Pro-tested, Player-Approved

Developed with direct input from esports legends including Nikola “NiKo” Kovač, Counter-Strike icon and newest member of Team Razer, and Shotzzy, professional Call of Duty player for OpTic, the BlackShark V3 Pro gaming headset was meticulously fine-tuned for competitive excellence.

“Sound plays a huge role in how I make decisions in-game,” said NiKo. “With the BlackShark V3 Pro, it became easier to pick the more subtle audio details around reloads, footsteps and position shifts, that were harder to catch before. I had a chance to try the early prototypes and worked closely with Razer’s team to help fine-tune the headset for competitive CS2. It’s definitely a step up, and a clear upgrade that keeps me focused and confident.”

“The audio clarity and mic quality are next level—it’s everything I need to stay locked in and make the right calls,” said Shotzzy. “I’ve used it in scrims and tournaments, and the clarity really stands out. I also shared feedback with Razer during testing—it’s clear this headset was built with competitive play in mind.”

Tailored Audio for Every Platform

Each BlackShark V3 Pro model is optimized to deliver competitive-grade audio for its respective platform:

  • PC – THX Spatial Audio with enhanced 7.1.4 surround for expanded verticality and precision.
  • PlayStation® – Compatible with Tempest 3D Audio for console-specific soundscapes.
  • Xbox – Supports Windows Sonic for spatial sound tuned to Xbox environments.

The esports gaming headset supports four versatile connection modes: 2.4 GHz wireless, Bluetooth, USB-A, and 3.5 mm. It also supports simultaneous 2.4 GHz HyperSpeed Wireless and Bluetooth audio, allowing dual-device connectivity ideal for staying connected to voice chat or calls while gaming.

With 12 pro-tuned EQ profiles optimized for popular FPS titles and support for up to 9 custom EQ profiles stored directly on the headset, gamers can enjoy plug-and-play performance without software.
