Team Alpha Recon Airsoft Interview

IMG_2803

Recently, I got to interview the guys at Team Alpha Recon – a well-known, Texas-based airsoft team making waves in the action sports community with their upcoming Op. Red Bear. I’d like to thank “Reaper” and “XL” from Team Alpha Recon for taking the time to answer our questions.

Q) Hey Reaper! Thanks so much for taking the time to do this interview. You are one of the co-founders of the Team Alpha Recon airsoft team. Could you tell us a bit about your team in general? How it came about, how long you have been a team, number of members, etc?

A) No problem, we are honored to be a part of it Jerry. XL and I met in mid-2013 when we first discovered “Milsim” and we became very interested in the unofficial sport. We began buying gear slowly as we gradually learned about big name brands. Shortly after a few training sessions, we created Team Alpha Recon; in the beginning it was very slow for us because we didn’t know about all the National Ops. We first attended a local operation called “Op. Gridwall” which is located at Tank’s Paintball in Richmond, TX. This is where we quickly became part of the community and started making a name for ourselves. A little over a year later, we have acquired over 20 teammates ranging from 14 – 45 years of age.

Q) There are probably as many ways to coordinate and organize an airsoft team as there are teams themselves. How does Team Alpha Recon organize itself – fire teams, etc?

A) Being such a big team we first separated the adults from the younger guys.We usually break up into two fire teams and rely on our comms; we do this so we can be at two places at once giving fore from two different angles. You become more of a threat that way.

IMG_20150316_002900

Q) Operating such a large team must come with some challenges. What kind of challenges, if any, do you encounter in keeping the team operating and everyone engaged?

A) Challenges you say? Definitely, you will always have small conflicts in a big group of guys. You don’t always know a player’s true personality until after a few times going out together. We’ve dealt with negative attitudes, guys not showing up to training, even an occasional argument between players. Being that we (XL and I) are both CO’s we have each other’s backs and handle any problem as a unit.

Q) How often does your team practice and train, and what kind of drills do you guys prefer?

A) We practice every Sunday when the weather allows us to. We like to do a lot of two man drills; it adds a whole other element to the drill. We study a lot of Haley Strategic doctrine so our drills tend to mimic theirs.

Q) Airsoft is definitely starting to become a multi-generational sport with players of nearly all ages participating. What is the age range of the players in Team Alpha Recon?

A) When we first began we started out as an adult only team with about 5 players. After getting some attention from the smaller ops, local juniors started asking if we could create a junior squad so that they could be apart of the team. So we did, our junior team consists of 14 – 17 years old and our adult team ranges in age from 18 – 45 years old. If you can operate, you can operate – age is just a number.

IMG_20150301_223901

Q) Does Team Alpha Recon have any sponsors you would like to plug now or perhaps pursue in the future?

A) First I’d like to give our partners at Watch Your Six Clothing a shout out. We started a partnership with them shortly after making our team. We help them sell their gear and they return the favor for us! We are currently sponsored by Tanks Paintball in Richmond, TX. That being said, we are not sponsored with a major airsoft-specific company. We have had opportunities with local shops in the past but nothing promising for the team. We are patiently waiting for the right companies to partner with. Some of the companies we would like to work with are: Valken, Evike, Arisoft GI, AMS, Elite Force, KWA, G&G and Emerson.

Q) How does Team Alpha Recon work its recruitment procedures? Do you guys host dedicated “open houses” or just keep your eyes on players you meet on the field?

A) We look for players that are as dedicated as we are and can afford to put time and effort into training and our team, the rest can be developed within training. We want the sport to grow so being new to airsoft doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re not good, if you find that your friend is a little better than you, ask him to teach you anything simple that’ll help you. Those are the type of guys we are! We love to have fun and hang out but we do take our team seriously so you have to be very dedicated to be a part of TAR.

Q) Would you guys like to share any stories or anecdotes from your most memorable games or ops?

A) Well I’ll never forget the time we played a local team, who was supposed to be a pretty good and well known team. Outnumbered and not having the equipment like they did, we managed to win every round – most of the time without the single death of a teammate. After that game, we knew we could really compete in airsoft ops and take things to the next level.

Q) Now that we are at the start of the year, event hosts like American Milsim and Operation Lion Claws are both gearing up their new season. What are Team Alpha Recon’s next big games/ops coming up?

A) As of right now, we will be attending BB Wars at D14 in Dallas, Tx hosted by Airsoft GI; along with Broken Home 4, Iron claw 2 & the Reindeer game at the end of the year hosted by American Milsim.

IMG_20150301_230003

Q) Can you give us a rundown of your basic loadout? Any particular brands or types of guns, gear, etc you swear by and don’t leave home without?

A) Adult team – AOR 1 GEN 11 Emerson BDU’s (awesome fit and very operational). We run coyote tan gear and plate carriers but the rest is based on players preference. As of right now only the BDU’s and tan gear are a requirement. Weapons we run – M4,M14, SR25, G36c, R36k, etc. We only run BluFor weapons so that way if a teammate runs out of ammo, one of us can help out.

Q) What advice would you give players looking to start their own team?

A) If you want to start a team I’d say the first thing you should do is figure out exactly where you’d like your team to go. A plan or goal is vital to a team’s success. Always recruit guys that share the same passion you have for the sport – you’ll find out that half the guys that play show up whenever they want and aren’t very dedicated. Also, a team doesn’t necessarily have to be real big, a 5-7 man squad is perfect plus it’s easier to manage. So, good luck guys and I hope this ends up helping out!

Q) Thanks so much for taking the time to answer our questions, Reaper. Finally, is there anything else you would like our readers to know about Team Alpha Recon that we haven’t touched on already?

A) We would like people to know that we are hosting Op. Red Bear in Humble, TX this May 31st and hope to see you there! This sport means a lot to us and we will continue to help out the community as much as possible. Thank you so much for taking the time and remember, BANG BANG!!

Once again, we would like to say thank you to Reaper, XL, and the rest of Team Alpha Recon for taking the time to answer our questions!

Carrie the Musical Review – La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts

carrie-the-musical-1

I originally attended the March 20, 2015 performance of Carrie the Musical, over at the La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts, not intending to review it. Many of you readers know that we have a dedicated horror/Halloween column here on the site thanks to my love of that kind of media. So, I was really excited to check out this production in person. After about fifteen minutes into the show, I knew I had to write a review of it. Carrie the Musical tells the story of a girl, Carrie, who is relentlessly bullied at school, and eventually finds her voice as well as a power she could not imagine. If you have seen the Stephen King movie or novel that this musical is based on, you know things don’t end well…

Emily Lopez does an amazing job in the titular role of Carietta “Carrie” White, and Misty Cotton is wonderful in her role as the tragic, and detestable, Margaret White, Carrie’s Mother. Kayla Parker plays as Sue Snell, the girl who is most sympathetic towards Carrie and Valerie Rose Curiel plays Chris Hargensen, the true villain of the story. Jon Robert Hall plays Tommy Ross, Carrie’s prom date, and Garrett Marshall plays Billy Nolan, boyfriend and accomplice to Curiel’s Hargensen.

Emily Lopez has a terrific way of getting the audience to feel sorry for her and protective of her all at the same time. By the musical’s climax, you can understand exactly why Carrie does what she does in a blind fit of rage. Also, big kudos to Lopez for fearlessly doing a fully nude scene on stage. Lopez uses the vulnerability of the situation to her advantage and sells the sad, shocking scene to the audience with the skills of a veteran actor. Misty Cotton manages to masterfully-walk a fine line in a place where the adjectives “crazy”, “sad”, and “tragic” all merge together and this further adds to how we feel about Carrie and her struggles. Like most characters in Carrie the Musical, Margaret White also has her own cross to bear (no pun intended). Their relationship throughout the musical is complicated, to say the least.

Kayla Parker’s Sue Snell is the character we are first introduced to in the show and she does a great job of walking both the pre and post-prom worlds. Her character is also sympathetic to Carrie and, in terms of the story, has a lot to feel guilty about when all is said and done. John Robert Hall’s Tommy Ross is more of the “straight man” to the actions of the rest of the male cast. Tommy is great at sports but he has his own internal struggle about his future to deal with, and really doesn’t want anything to do with tormenting Carrie White. In fact, I would say Kayla Parker and Jon Robert Hall’s characters are the most “real” of any of those in the story – middle of the road kids who feel for what Carrie is going through, they try to make things right, but also are going through their own issues.

carrie-the-musical-2

Valerie Rose Curiel plays the malicious and evil Chris Hargensen and she is outstanding in this role. Before that gets misconstrued, I will state for the record that I heard Curiel speaking after the show and she was exceptionally nice and nothing like Chris. This makes me give her even more praise as she really made me hate her character consistently through her performance. Chris is broken and, in some ways, the true monster of the story. Then again, there are also a few moments, phrases, etc where you can see some cracks in her armor and those moments give the audience pause in thinking what she must have gone through to be the way she is. Garrett Marshall’s Billy Nolan is the Yin to Hargensen’s Yang. He is a trouble-making, give no f***s about anything student that looks to be on a one-way trip to prison or worse. Like Curiel, Marshall makes us seriously hate his character’s guts. Also like Curiel, Marshall is nothing like his character – I have spoken with Garrett several times now and he has always been friendly and open. They are both highly commendable in their performances as bullies.

In my watching of this performance, I was shocked at just how seriously I viewed what was happening to Carrie. I was sometimes angry and even a little wrathful of her tormentors. The protective instinct in me partly wanted to march down onto the “gym” floor, wrap a safety blanket around the poor girl, and take her out of that situation. This was in stark contrast to my memories of watching the movie, starring Sissy Spacek, when I was younger. I remember viewing the film as a sort of campy revenge flick where the mean girls got their comeuppance. Not this time however, and I couldn’t quite figure out why until sitting down to write this review. Maybe it was because I had my share of bullying and name calling in high school – maybe it is because I am simply older now. However, I think there is more to it than that…

There is a reason why the story of Carrie resonates so much more effectively in 2015 than it did when the original novel came out in 1974, or the movie in 1976, or even the many (sometimes failed) incarnations of the musical since 1988. That reason is simply that we live in a Post-Columbine world where, as a society, so much more light has been shed on teen bullying and school violence due to grizzly situations like that one and, unfortunately, several others. One could argue that “Carrie” is the first fictional active school shooter story – just have Carrie bring an assault rifle to the prom instead of her telekinetic abilities. But, I digress…

carrie-the-musical-4

Carrie the Musical’s design/production team needs to be given huge kudos for the terrific job they did of immersing the audience into the world of Ewen High School. Throughout the performance, characters and effects appear all around the audience and it added a fun, dynamic staging to the show. This is in stark contrast to past incarnations of the musical which have been performed in a traditional audience facing a stage and proscenium style. Oh no – in this version of Carrie the Musical, you are all on stage! I am sad to report that the seating is not very comfortable as you are basically sitting on wooden bleachers. If you have a seat pad you like, bring it – you will thank me!

Now, while the show has been cleaned up and streamlined from past versions, it still has some moments where a musical number or two drags on longer than it should. Sometimes that is to hide a quick change (which is understandable) but, other times, it’s just the way it is… However, these are minor occurrences and were mostly exacerbated by the seating issue.

Overall, I would highly suggest you pick up a ticket to Carrie the Musical. It is a great show with some truly intense moments. It also features a cast that gives it their all and commits to the roles they are playing – even when scenes are uncomfortable, anger-provoking, or simply shocking, they are a joy to watch work their craft.

Carrie the Musical runs until April 5, 2015. You can find ticket information and more over at the La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts website.

Resident Evil Revelations 2 Soundtrack Available Now

Resident Evil Revelations 2 Cover

New York (March 18, 2015) – Sumthing Else Music Works, through its licensing relationship with Capcom, today announced that the official soundtrack for Resident Evil® Revelations 2 is now available for digital download from Sumthing.com and other major digital music sites. The Resident Evil® Revelations 2 Original Soundtrack features over three hours of original score from Capcom’s new entry in the ground-breaking survival horror video game series which has sold over 50 million units worldwide.

Defining a new musical direction for the series, the original score for Resident Evil Revelations 2 was created and supervised by Capcom’s composer and sound director Kota Suzuki (Resident Evil® Revelations, Resident Evil® 6, Resident Evil® 5) in collaboration with film composer and multi-instrumentalist Nima Fakhrara (“Gatchaman,” “The Pyramid,” “The Courier”) as well as composer and sound designer Ichiro Kohmoto (Resident Evil Revelations, Resident Evil® 0). The soundtrack was produced by Koyo Sonae. Music samples are available at Sumthing.com.

“Our main theme of focus was ‘duality of sound’ implemented through original instruments,” describes Kota Suzuki, composer and sound director of the Resident Evil® series. “We assembled this compilation with two distinct genres of sound in mind. Aiming for the overall music to deliver a broad, airy feel, while at the same time introducing acoustic instruments to create gaps within the sound, the composition reduces how quickly players grow accustomed to the music, and allows for sound effects to easily create the game’s desired atmosphere.”

Describing Capcom’s collaboration with Nima Fakhrara, a film composer renowned for creating unique instruments as the basis for his original scores, Kota Suzuki added, “We always kept aiming to provide players with a new sense of suspense and surprise with this installation. His productions possessed that particular element of darkness that worked perfectly with our[s]. After many brainstorming sessions we decided to use ‘iron’ and ‘water’ as our concepts in creating new instruments. And, after recording, we edited and mixed the sound with other tracks to create a truly unique sound…His touch was exactly what we needed to give our sound the definitive edge.”

The beginning of the Resident Evil Revelations 2 tale sees fan favorite Claire Redfield make a dramatic return. Survivor of the Raccoon City incident depicted in previous Resident Evil® games, Claire now works for the anti-bioterrorism organization Terra Save. She and Moira Burton are attending a company party for Terra Save when unknown armed forces storm the office, capture Claire and Moira and take them to a dark and abandoned detention facility on a mysterious island. Headed for the remote island in search of his missing daughter, Barry Burton meets brand new character Natalia Korda, a little girl who has a strange power that allows her to sense enemies and hidden items. Using this skill alongside Barry’s proven combat abilities, players will need to alternate between the two to survive the mysterious island and find Moira. With terrifying enemies waiting around every dark corner, players will need to use their ammo and weapon supply wisely, in classic survival horror style.

Evolving the episodic chapter set-up of the original Resident Evil Revelations, Resident Evil Revelations 2 initially released as a weekly series of four episodic downloads beginning on February 24, 2015. A full digital download option of the Complete Season is currently available to ensure fans can get access to all individual episodes now. Each episode in Resident Evil Revelations 2 includes Raid Mode content and two full playable scenarios focused on the Claire and Moira storyline as well as the Barry and Natalia campaign. The full retail disc version, including all individual episodes and all additional game content, is available now across North America.
