World of Tanks Blitz Halloween Special Kicks Off

wot-blitz-tankenstein

October 14, 2015 — World of Tanks Blitz has a spooky surprise in store for tankers beginning today and running until October 31. This event delivers a series of Personal Missions that rewards players with a unique vehicle: Tankenstein.

This event consists of several stages allowing players to build the chilling Tier 7 heavy tank, piece by piece. Due to Tankenstein’s ghastly origins—brought to life by six tanks from around the world—it arrives with a unique skin. Players can also choose from two guns to install, each with special characteristics and appearance. If all seven missions are not completed, in-game prizes will be awarded for participating in the event.

Friday the 13th: The Game Announced

friday-the-13th-logo

In a great Halloween time twist, Gun Media’s upcoming horror game, Summer Camp, has been revealed to actually be Friday the 13th: The Game! According to the developers, the game is an online, asymmetric multiplayer experience where one player will assume the role of Jason Voorhees against seven other players assuming the roles of camp counselors trying to survive the night. Friday the 13th: The Game is being developed for PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4, for release in the fall of 2016.

You can find the game’s Kickstarter page here if you would like to help make this game happen (which it probably will whether or not the Kickstarter is successful).

2015 Queen Mary’s Dark Harbor Review #DarkHarbor

IMG_2280 copy

Queen Mary’s Dark Harbor is back again for another terrifying year in the Long Beach harbor, bringing with it 6 mazes, a plethora of shows, and an eclectic assortment of freaks, ghouls, and ghosts ready to torment guests throughout the Halloween season. This year Dark Harbor debuts two brand new attractions: Lullaby, a haunted maze, and Curse of Anubis: Paintball Adventure. Also back are 5 returning, but heavily updated mazes.

Natives of Southern California are all too familiar with the Queen Mary’s historically haunted reputation and this is something that the heads of this event took very seriously. Seeing as how the ship is rumored to be inhabited by several spirits, Dark Harbor actually brought in a psychic medium, someone who can communicate with the dead, to ask permission before they went forward with building any mazes on board, just in case. We assume that they gave their approval as half of the mazes are built on the ship.

First up for the night was Soulmate.  This maze was one of our favorites last year, and this year was no disappointment. Returning as the feature of this maze is Graceful Gale who is on a mission to create her perfect mate made from all the perfect parts of the men she attracts. The length of this maze felt a bit shorter than last year, which may be due to some renovations currently taking place on the ship. However despite the length, the designers were somehow able to find room to add new scenes and scares that took this already great maze up a notch.

Also returning this year is Deadrise, located on the midway, the crew of a sunken navy ship have surface to recruit new members. This one felt longer than last year and had some added features like multiple path choices. Our hats off to the crew in this maze. These sailors were high energy, witty, and super aggressive. Definitely a must see.

B340 is the story of a man that went on a killing spree aboard a cruise ship and was held captive in his room (Room B340) until the ship reached shore, where he descended into madness.  This is a maze that we really enjoyed last year even though we weren’t quite sure what the story was at first. Something I took note of this year was the use of signs set throughout the queue lines of the mazes that told some of the back story of the characters and settings you are about to encounter. Having an idea of what we were about to walk into made the mazes work that much more. B340 in a word, is unsettling. Highlights for us were the church and its nuns and of course the brain room, as you literally walk through the mind of psychopath. Be sure not to skip this one.

Next we checked Curse of Anubis: Paintball Adventure. This attraction puts you into a haunted Egyptian tomb where you have to use paintball guns to fight off Anubis, the God of the Underworld and his mummies. This attraction is a $10 up charge and despite it being billed as an adventure, is nothing more than a shooting gallery featuring static and animated targets as well as a some talent dressed as mummies trying to dodge your shots. I can’t say that we didn’t have fun shooting at stuff, but I also can’t say we got $10 worth of fun.

Another up charge attraction, at a $5 admission price, is the Side Show of Freaks and Oddities, featuring the Side Show Bar and stage. This is basically a lounge and entertainment area, featuring a small stage that has rotating acts throughout the night, 2 mini mazes houses in shipping containers, and tarot card readers. This might be a good place to sit down and rest a bit while enjoying some refreshments, if it wasn’t a $5 admission. Save your money on this one and take advantage of the bar and lounge areas on the midway.

IMG_2661 copy

Back to the mazes, we headed next to the Voodoo Village. We were super impressed by this maze design and its talent. As you venture through dank swamps and catacombs, the Voodoo Priestess and her followers are looking for new sacrifices. I have to admit, the talent in the maze got good scares out of me and I’m not easy to scare. Great sets. Great talent. Great maze.

Circus has been almost completely redesigned for this year, adding in some big set pieces and new gags. Unfortunately these additions made for a much less enjoyable experience than last year. 2 of the new additions are a spinning tunnel and a ball pit. Yes I said a ball pit…one that you have to climb over a small wall and wade through to proceed. These additions were really bold ideas, and I can completely understand where the designers were going with it, however it really only served to slow the pace of traffic to a crawl so most of our time was spent standing in the maze, waiting to move forward in line. Also it should be noted, that anyone in a wheelchair or with mobility issues would have to bypass these rooms, which are a large percentage of the maze. The Queen Mary was built long before laws for handicap access existed, so when the mazes on the ship require walking up and down stairs or through paths that might not be as handicap friendly, it is somewhat understandable. This maze however is not house on the ship, and still was designed to be limiting to anyone with mobility issues, and I for one feel that is a big misstep. Skip this one unless you are really into ball pits.

IMG_2545 copy

We’ve saved the newest and best for last. Lullaby replaces last year’s ‘Submerged’ by focusing in on one of that maze’s main characters, Scary Mary. Having drowned on the ship, Mary has been rumored to have haunted the pool of the ship for decades. In this maze, she wants nothing more than to keep you aboard the ship forever as her new friend. Mary is featured in nearly every scene in this maze, seemingly appearing ahead of you over and over with no indication of how she is in every room – very impressive. The design, story, and casting of this maze is top notch. Our group enjoyed it so much that we went through several times. Be sure to check this one out and let yourself play with Mary, if you are brave.

It should be noted that we took advantage of the Fast Fright Pass, which allows you to skip most off the lines for the mazes and attractions. This is a must have for this event in our opinion as the lines get unbelievably long. These passes are well worth the prices to be able to see all the mazes as many times as you like.

Dark Harbor is well worth the price of admission. Be sure to check out the slider show on the midway and the entertainment throughout the park. Dark Harbor is open on selected dates throughout October and offers several VIP ticketing and hotel packages as well as special events throughout the Season. Be sure to check out their website for more details.

Warhammer: End Times Vermintide – Dwarf Ranger Action Reel

Warhammer-End-Times-Vermintide-Screenshots-1

October 12, 2015 – Independent developer Fatshark today released the fourth of five Action Reels, showcasing gameplay from each of the five heroes playable in Warhammer: End Times – Vermintide. The latest Action Reel is of Bardin Goreksson, the Dwarf Ranger hailing from the Grey Mountains. Dwarves are often considered a gregarious folk, prideful and not afraid to offend, and few are more so than Bardin. He is not the vindictive type or cruel in nature, but he has a habit of belittling his comrades through sheer ignorance and his robust attitude. He will oftentimes be the loudest in the group, even if silence would have been preferable. If negotiations go sour, the Dwarf Ranger is the first with his axe out and swinging.

In Vermintide, the city of Ubersreik is under siege as players select from a band of five heroes with different play-styles and abilities, all equipped with unique gear and personalities. Working together cooperatively, players must use their individual attributes to survive an apocalyptic invasion from hordes of relentless, power hungry Skaven, across a range of environments stretching from the top of the Magnus Tower to the bowels of the Under Empire.

Vermintide will launch on Steam for Windows PC on October 23rd and is now available to pre-order in a Standard and Collector’s edition. To secure your pre-order please visit the Warhammer: The End Times – Vermintide Steam page: store.steampowered.com/app/235540/

2015 LA Haunted Hayride Black Carpet and Review

la-haunted-hayride-2015-267 copy

Our evening at the 2015 Los Angeles Haunted Hayride began as it usually does, with their black carpet event. We arrived to the Griffith Park Old Zoo location just prior to dusk and checked-in with the media desk. We got situated on the press line side of the red carpet and waited in the sprinkling rain for the celebrities to arrive. One by one, they came and walked the carpet. We got the chance to see Bridget Marquardt, Bryan Greenburg, and Elaine Hendrix – to name just a few. After taking photographs for a while, it was time to venture into the event location proper and check out its various attractions. The LA Haunted Hayride offers three ticket tiers – General admission for $43, VIP admission for $59, and a hayride only ticket for $30.

The LA Haunted Hayride has consistently been one of my favorite Halloween attractions for several years now – very sadly, until this one. Unfortunately, the entire narrative of the hayride attraction is muddled and inconsistent with no real payoff. The queue line is dotted with monitors telling about the history of the mythical “boogeyman”, so I fully expected the hayride to be a search for or, perhaps, an escape from the boogeyman. The different vignettes that your hay cart passes by seem disjointed and, even though we got teased of the boogeyman’s approach near the end of the ride, there is no climax or resolution featuring the creature itself – it just falls a bit flat for my liking. Also, the hayride was missing some of the technical ingenuity from years past.

la-haunted-hayride-2015-220 copy

Past hayrides featured growing demons, burn victims still smoldering as they attacked the hay cart, and even crow people that descended on the cart via giant, flexible poles. This year seemed to lack that magical, “how did they do that” factor. Additionally, they have erected these black vinyl-draped fences along a lot of the hayride route. This is a mistake as the outlying forest of the Griffith Park Old Zoo location is really creepy and seeing it adds to the overall ride experience. Even seeing glimpses of the next vignette in the distance adds to the suspense of what might happen to riders. TenThirtyOne Productions was very focused on getting the New York Haunted Hayride online this year and, in its natal form, I can’t help but wonder if it took some of the work away from the LA experience. My hope is that next year, after the New York Haunted Hayride has had its base infrastructure set up, that the designers and creators of the experience can more equally share their time between coasts. That is not to say that the hayride is devoid of scares – not by any means. Several people in our hay cart were screaming like banshees as the monsters terrorized them. Overall, the hayride just didn’t live up to its previous incarnations this year.

(As an aside, I must confess that I am terribly saddened to have had to write that preceding paragraph. I have been a fan of the LA Haunted Hayride for a long time – it is the only haunted attraction in Southern California that successfully merged the feel and look of a Midwestern Halloween carnival with modern effects and scares.)

After the hayride, we ventured over to Jack’s Carving Shack where, for a small fee, guests can carve pumpkins. The first Sunday night of the event’s run saw very little in the way of crowds, so there were really no lines for anything. This, undoubtedly, will change as we get more into October proper. The hayride can attract over 60,000 people a season, so be sure to get there early if you attend. Last year, we saw all manner of cool-looking pumpkin designs and it is always fun to see how creative people can get with their creations.

la-haunted-hayride-2015-199 copy

The “Grub Shack” is back this year and the menu hasn’t changed since last time. It’s all vegan-friendly, so don’t expect your burger to be real meat. That being said, the “Pumpkin Head Fritters” are delicious. Unfortunately, they are still using cold caramel sauce on the “Candyman Apples” – a mistake. I hope next year they select hot caramel to drizzle on them. I know hot caramel can be tricky, but the pay-off in taste experience is well worth it. The “High Tension Taquitos” where also good as were the “Misery Mac & Cheese Balls”. Do yourself a favor and just order the mac & cheese balls plain – sans ranch or BBQ sauce. The “cheap” flavor of the sauces detract from the crispy, cheesy goodness of the cheese balls. Also, they should bring back the hot chocolate that the “Grub Shack” had a couple of years ago – nothing sets the Halloween mood like candied or caramel apples and hot cocoa on a cool Fall evening.

Here is another example of where the LA Haunted Hayride needs to regain a bit of its previous “heart” from past years. In past hayrides, the event would see these concession workers walking around the grounds selling things like candied apples, popcorn, sodas, etc. What was cool was that they were all themed and costumed in some way. I loved the candied apple hawker’s mask that looked like two candied apples were shoved into his eye sockets. This year, there was simply a guy who looked like he walked in from the public park with an ice chest of sodas and a stool sitting on the side of the event grounds – no uniform or costume. In fact, I was tempted to call security at one point because he didn’t look like he was an official worker of the LA Haunted Hayride or its food vendor. Then I saw a recent image from the NY Haunted Hayride and, sure enough, there was the candied apple mask. I do believe they split their resources a ton this year in getting the East Coast event off the ground.

la-haunted-hayride-2015-271 copy

The “In-Between” dark maze has returned and is as winding and disorientating as ever. Guests are given a small lamp and are made to wear masks inside. The cool part about this haunted house is that the monsters are wearing the same kind of masks. So, guests are never sure if they are running into monsters or other lost souls trying to navigate their way through the dark experience.

The new “Trick Or Treat” haunted house offers guests a chance to engage in trick or treating, LA Haunted Hayride style. Guests move from scene to scene, receiving either a trick or a treat – the treats in this case being real candy! The timing of some of the gags was a bit off but, overall, this was interesting to go through and experience.

“House of Shadows” is also a new haunted house at the LA Haunted Hayride. A semi-escape room style experience, groups of guests are made to navigate the dark interior looking for the boogeyman. There are several neat little gimmicks throughout the haunted house and, overall, this was the most successful of the various attractions at the LA Haunted Hayride. Definitely check this one out if you get up to the LA Haunted Hayride this year.

Overall, this year’s Los Angeles Haunted Hayride feels like it has taken a backseat to TenThirtyOne’s New York Haunted Hayride. They seem to have received a lot of costumes, masks, and props from the LA experience and it has suffered for it. I would call this season a growing pain for the event – you will have fun, but you may be letdown if you attended the events previous incarnations.

ROCCAT Unveils Kova Gaming Mouse

roccat-kova-mouse

Hamburg, 8 October 2015 – ROCCAT kicks off the release season in 2015 with the launch of its all new Kova performance gaming mouse, the successor to the popular Kova[+]. The Kova[+] took the gaming scene by storm when it was released in 2010 and went on to develop a hardcore cult following thanks to its streamlined aesthetics. Forged using the legacy of its predecessor as its blueprint, the new Kova represents a re-imagined fan favorite for gamers who value pure performance above all else.

The new Kova features a sleek, ambidextrous design suitable for left- and right-handers alike. Built for power and speed, the mouse places a strong emphasis on raw performance. The result is streamlined, sports-car like aesthetics with doubled-up core functionality.

The all new Kova – doubled up functionality

The mouse is equipped with a latest generation Pro-Optic R6 sensor with 3500 native dpi featuring Overdrive mode. Overdrive allows for a stable dpi double-up, resulting in an effective dpi of 7000. This technology is made possible by the powerful Turbo Core V2 32-bit ARM-based MCU in the engine room. Two Smart Cast buttons sit on either side of the Kova’s mouse 1 and mouse 2 buttons. They form part of an overall intuitive button layout designed for lightning-fast reactions to in-game events. Optimally placed within finger-tip reach, the Smart Cast buttons add a new level of reflexive control for fast-paced games and facilitate rapid combos and easy switching between, for example, weapons or ammo types, and so on.

The Kova features double the illumination power thanks to a vivid RGB lighting system. The 16.8 million color illumination suite lets you configure the scroll wheel and mouse rim lighting independently of each other.

ROCCAT’s famous Easy-Shift[+] technology takes the Kova’s total number of button functions up to an impressive 22. The mouse is available in both black and white and is compatible with ROCCAT’s new Swarm driver system.

ROCCAT founder and CEO, René Korte, comments: “The Kova[+] was cherished by gamers for its sleek aesthetics, and that’s something we wanted to keep when re-imagining the mouse for the games of today. The new Kova is a worthy successor to the name, carrying on the tradition of streamlined performance. It features a high-octane, sports-car like build with staggering power under the hood. We’re sure it’ll delight hardcore gamers as well as fans of the original.” The all new ROCCAT Kova will retail for 59,99 Euro and hits stores worldwide 17 November 2015.
