Slain! Pushed Back to March 24

Wolf Brew Games and Digerati Distribution are sad to say from their deepest, darkest metal hearts that you’re going to have to wait a little longer before you can reign in the blood of monsters, demons and evil lords as the Nordic warrior Bathoryn in gruesome gothic puzzle-combat platformer Slain!.

The game needs a few last tweaks because right now no mortal man or woman could possibly get past Slain!’s intense platforming, traps and monstrosities. Luckily the wait isn’t too long as Slain! will now launch March 24 on Steam.

If you’re unfamiliar with Slain!, think Castlevania meets Metalocalypse meets Slayer. The game pays homage to the hack-and-slash action titles of the ‘80s and ‘90s, but features a strategic twist that has players use elemental weapons, Mana spells and cunning skill to exploit the weaknesses of enemies such as werewolves.

Wargaming Announces “Project R” for World of Warships

January 18, 2016 — Wargaming today announced “Project R”, the brand-new community campaign for World of Warships, is now live. In “Project R”, players must reach various milestones to earn Pearls, which they use to rebuild the famed Japanese destroyer Kamikaze with unique camouflage, as well as unlock fantastic in-game rewards.

“‘Project R’ is a great opportunity for us to engage with the vibrant World of Warships community and provide great content in a fun way,” said Jacek Pudlik, Associate Publishing Producer, Wargaming Europe. “We’re all looking forward to seeing just what the fans of the game are capable of who the really standout players will be.”

To earn Pearls, captains must challenge special “Project R” in-game missions. By completing these missions and achieving various milestones, they can also earn credits, Premium Account, camouflage and other boosts which are based on an individual’s contribution. What’s more exciting: if the community reaches the milestone of 32.5 million, Kamikaze will be completed and 1,000 Japanese destroyers will be randomly given to participants who collected 150 Pearls or more.

“Project R” lasts for five weeks, giving the whole community a boatload of time to band together and scourge the oceans in search of awesome rewards.

Mountain High Media Day January 2016 Travelblog

From E3 to ScareLA to CES, to a variety of theme park-related events, we have certainly had our fair share of traveling adventures for GamingShogun.com. But, when the opportunity to attend the recent media day at the Mountain High resort presented itself, I couldn’t pass it up. I had never been skiing before and, up until the media day, I was under the impression that I would careen down the slopes wearing only one ski to show up Ski Patrol bully “Blaine” and win the heart of the beautiful “Beth” only to realize that I truly belonged with “Monique” all along. Yes, I am referring to the venerable John Cusack classic, Better Off Dead.

Back to Reality

With these 80’s film-inspired ski fantasies living in my brain, I knew that I had a lot to learn about real world skiing. So we packed up the GamingShogun family truckster and headed off for the resort in the early morning hours. That was a good thing too, as it didn’t take long for the entrance road to the Mountain High resort to get backed up with cars trying to get to its three parking lots. The best advice I can give anyone wanting to have fun at Mountain High is to get there as early as humanly possible. This is one popular resort and skiers and snowboarders arrive in droves – the earlier you arrive, the better. You will get a better parking spot as well as place in line for any equipment rentals you need to do. As we waited in line for our equipment rentals, the nerves started in as this was actually going to happen. We were going to be sliding across a field of snow on a couple of “flimsy” sticks!

Resort Amenities

Mountain High is also home to three “lodges” were you can rest, chat with other resort guests, browse the pro shop, and grab a quick snack. However, Mountain High also has a great grill up the hill a bit on the West Resort called the Bullwheel Grill. I highly recommend taking some time out of your visit to dine here and enjoy the sights of the mountain – plus, the food is very good! Aside from that, Mountain High is also home to “North Pole Tubing”! This attraction is, as you would expect, a tubing ride down their special tracks located in the North Resort. We were unable to get to this attraction on the media day as it had already sold out by time we arrived. Again, if you want to do this stuff be sure to arrive early! From the looks of it, however, North Pole Tubing is a lot of fun.

The First Lesson

So, we got our ski boots and skis and duck walked up to the West Resort’s “moving carpet”, which is a slow conveyor belt to take you up to the bunny slopes/training area. Our instructor lined us all up and provided us with the necessary pre-lesson safety briefing and we began. The lesson started with the basics of how to fasten your boots and, after about an hour of training, we were slowly making our way down the bunny slope practicing our “pizza” and “french fry” ski configurations.

Unfortunately, I am not the most agile or coordinated of individuals and it took me quite a bit of time to get the hang of this. By the end of a two our session, I had gotten fairly good at going down the bunny slope at slow speed, still doing my pizza and french fries. I was feeling a lot more confident about it after that and think that, with some more practice time, I could be ready for hitting actual slopes in the future. Above all else, it was a lot of fun to do!

Additionally, it was a killer workout! I wore some heavy snow gear thinking that with the low temperatures, I would be a human Popsicle. With all the movement and maneuvering of the skis, I was warm and toasty – a little too much, actually. I would highly suggest wearing layers of light garments so that you can remove them if/when you start heating up.

Pricing

An 8 hour lift ticket will put you back $69 dollars on most Saturdays, which works out to around $8.60 per hour of enjoyment – not too shabby! You can also purchase a 4 hour lift ticket for a little cheaper, but the 8 hour is definitely the best value. Mountain High has also introduced an online Express Pass purchasing method which allows customers to purchase and print out their passes. This will help customers avoid waiting in lines at the ticket window!

You can also rent the “Complete Ski Package” equipment set, consisting of skis, poles, and boots for only $30 dollars! Helmets are a separate rental, but can be donned for the low price of $5 dollars.

Overall

Mountain High was a lot of fun and something I would highly recommend everyone who lives in Southern California do, if physically able. It is right in our own backyard, located just off the 138 in Wrightwood, CA. While I never encountered Blaine or zoomed down the mountain on just one ski, the whole event was a blast and I can officially claim to have caught the ski-bug. I simply can’t wait to go back up and try it again. The snowfall this season has been really good thus far, and they estimate the end of season date to be sometime in March, so you have plenty of time to get on out there.

ROCCAT Announces Renga Stereo Gaming Headset

Hamburg, 14 January 2016 – Say hi to the Renga, the latest studio grade-stereo headset offering from German peripherals manufacturer ROCCAT. Complete with compatibility for PC, PlayStation®4, mobiles, tablets and more, it promises a premium stereo audio experience with its comfortable over-ear design built on a reinforced structural housing as its framework.

The Renga features high-spec 50mm neodymium driver units in each ear cup. The drivers are optimally aligned, providing an immersive and dynamic audio experience with crisp trebles and deep, powerful bass. The headset is designed on a reinforced skeletal frame which makes it low in weight and yet surprisingly robust. This provides the framework for a trio of comfort-providing extras, such as ventilated ear cups, an ergonomic headband and plush ear cushions. Suitable for countless hours of continued use, the Renga makes it feel like you’re not wearing a headset at all.

The inline remote control provides an easy-access overview for the most-used sound settings. This allows for on-the-fly, no-look control, enabling an intuitive gaming experience. The Renga’s crystal clear rotatable mic complements swapping easily between gaming and music playback. The premium over-ear headset experience is not just limited to the PC, however. Out of the box, the Renga’s outstanding sound is compatible with the PlayStation®4, Xbox One controllers with a 3.5mm headset jack, as well as mobiles and tablets.

“The Renga is the first of our newly-designed headsets built for just one use – the perfect stereo sound experience”, says René Korte, CEO and founder at ROCCAT. “Lightweight, robustly built and compatible with almost any device, the Renga is the everyday gaming headset that comes with an affordable price tag, without making compromises in quality.”

The ROCCAT Renga will be available in late February with a suggested retail price of 49,99 Euro/USD.

Cross Roads Escape Games The Hex Room Review

hex-room-IMG_5447 copy

Escape room challenges like The Hex Room from Cross Roads Escape Games in Anaheim, CA are all the rage these days. They offer guests an intense, brain-stimulating experience while often in the guise of a horror film a la SAW or Hostel. The core concept is that your team must complete a set of challenges and solve puzzles in order to escape. The usual formula, however, has been to put the group together and let everyone work together to solve these challenges. The Hex Room has taken this formula and turned it on its head – this time, each of your group is in their own room and must worry about solo AND group puzzles.

Going further with the horror film metaphor, The Hex Room assigns an archetypal horror film role to each of the team’s six members: The nerd, the jock, the virgin, the detective, the prom queen, and the rebel. The starting point for each person is based on his or her assigned role – giving each player a unique experience. The beauty of this is that you could technically come back six different times, and have six different puzzles to solve (Editor’s Note: The Detective role is the most challenging in the game, be warned). Cross Roads Escape Games was created by the dynamic duo of Madison and Luke Rhoades, who have attended and/or worked a multitude of escape rooms and other haunted events over the years. Their goal was to create something that stands out from the crowd and, I am pleased to write, they have succeeded.

Upon checking in, we each filled out a brief questionnaire which Madison used to determine each of our roles. I was deemed “The Virgin” and got to sport a pink “Hello Kitty” style ribbon in my short hair. One-by-one, we were each walked into the game area and sat in a pitch black room. Instructed to wait until the lights come on, I tried to survey the environment, to no avail. Then, over a loud speaker, the killer/game master/psychopath who put us all into the game introduced us to the situation at-hand. I will not spoil and of the puzzles that we encountered, but can definitely say they are challenging and will test you – both individually and as a group.

hex-room-IMG_5452 copy

The most important tip I can provide is that everyone must be able to communicate effectively as some people will have items or clues that other people need (as you are separated, this presents a challenge in and of itself). The Detective, as previously-mentioned, is the most challenging role in the experience, as it requires the most communication, as well as the ability to delegate and compartmentalize the situation to keep everything flowing smoothly.

Given one hour for the group to complete all the tasks and escape, we managed to get out with 40 seconds left on the clock! I am proud to say that we were the first group to actually escape during Cross Roads Escape Games’ press preview week (Editor’s Note: Smug-face, activated!).

Overall, Cross Roads Escape Games Hex Room is an entertaining, fun, and creepy escape room challenge that I highly recommend. Tickets are $32 a person and, remember, you must bring a group of six people. They will not add other people into your group that you don’t know.

Umarex Teams with Beretta for Limited Edition Airgun

  1. FORT SMITH, Ark. (Jan. 14, 2015) – Umarex USA is offering a limited edition Operation Desert Storm commemorative Beretta airgun in honor of the 25thanniversary of Desert Storm. The gun has the words “Desert Storm” and a profile of the M1A1 Abrams tank on the slide. Guns will be numbered consecutively from 1 to 750.

The 750 limited edition Desert Storm Beretta airguns will be available to order on a first-come-first-served basis to dealers who place an order at the 2016 Shooting Hunting & Outdoor Trade Show (SHOT Show®). Orders will be taken at the Umarex booth (#15062), in Las Vegas from January 19 to January 21. Dealers are limited to 30 guns and they are expected to sell out quickly.

A portion of proceeds will benefit Boot Campaign, a national non-profit charity dedicated to promote patriotism for America and our military community; raise awareness of the unique challenges service members face during and post-service; and provide assistance to military personnel, past and present, and their families.

Adam Blalock, President and CEO of Umarex USA, Inc. said, “This month marks the 25th anniversary of Operation Desert Storm. Because a Beretta M9 was the then-issued sidearm of the U.S. Military, it only seemed fitting that an Umarex-made Beretta, with proceeds benefitting the Boot Campaign, be used to commemorate those who served during that period in our country’s history.”

This is the third consecutive year that Umarex USA has offered a limited edition commemorative. At the 2014 SHOT Show®, a Colt 1911 commemorating World War II was offered and in 2015 the Limited Edition U.S. Marshals Colt Peacemaker was offered. The Desert Storm Beretta will serve as a tribute to the warriors who served during Operation Desert Storm of the Gulf War. A portion of proceeds will go to the Boot Campaign to help connect the 99 percent of Americans who have never served in our country’s military with the one percent that have served.

Since 2010, Boot Campaign has raised more than $12 million dollars to provide veteran housing assistance; wellness and family support; career and education grants; and financial assistance. In that time, more than one million patriots have been awakened; those who have attended Boot Campaign events, purchased combat boots, and engaged on Boot Campaign social platforms have been enlightened to the challenges facing America’s active duty and veteran families.
