Hogwarts Legacy Gameplay Showcase II

Warner Bros. Games and Avalanche Software today unveiled new gameplay videos for Hogwarts Legacy, the upcoming open-world, action role-playing-game launching February 10, 2023. The gameplay videos provide a look at the open world outside Hogwarts Castle via broom flight, a deeper look at combat in the Dark Arts Battle Arena and personalization in the Room of Requirement.

In the first section of gameplay, the player, a student at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in the late 1800s, mounts their broom flying low over the open world. Flying above the Scottish Highlands, the player lands to explore a hamlet which provides an opportunity to meet different witches and wizards while also participating in quest opportunities. The player then mounts an Onyx Hippogriff (a Hippogriff variant exclusive to pre-orders) to traverse the landscape as it changes to winter and the land is covered by snow.

In a deeper dive of the combat, the player, wearing the Dark Arts cosmetic set, walks through the Forbidden Forest before riding a Thestral to the Dark Arts Battle Arena. The Dark Arts Cosmetic Set, Thestral Mount, and Dark Arts Battle Arena are available exclusively in the Hogwarts Legacy Deluxe Edition or for purchase in-game in the Dark Arts Pack. The player immediately casts an Avada Kedavra spell to show the enemy’s health bar instantly go to zero. Tools such as potions and plants from the Room of Requirement can be brought with the player into combat to help defeat enemies more efficiently.

In the final video, the player visits the Room of Requirement. The entire space can be personalized and the architecture can be changed as the player conjures objects into the space. Conjurations can be found at Tomes and Scrolls in Hogsmeade or rewarded for completing various activities throughout the game. Utility items like planting pots and brewing stations can also be customized. Over the course of gameplay, the player will be able to conjure the Loom which can be used to customize and add magical properties to their gear. And finally, the player walks to the Vivarium where beasts are cared for. A Graphorn, Niffler, Kneazle and Mooncalf are revealed. By petting and feeding a beast, they will give the player the magical ingredients needed to customize and upgrade their gear. A toy chest is also available to play with the beasts and the beasts can be given individual names.

Review of Holidays at Universal Studios Hollywood 2022

The holidays have returned to Universal Studios Hollywood, bringing with it the wholesome fun of Grinchmas as well as the magical mischief of Christmas in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. We arrived at Universal Studios Hollywood early on a Sunday when we were not sure if it would be raining or not. Thankfully, the weather ended up being nice and cold without any rain that could have delayed or postponed any outside activities. I’d like to thank Universal Studios Hollywood’s press team for helping us get this access.

Walking into the park, we were greeted with beautiful holiday decor adorning just about every building and storefront. The Universal Plaza is the main home of Grinchmas, housing all the event’s activities and especially the Grinchmas tree itself. The Grinchmas tree is always impressive, and this year is no different. Guests can take their pictures with the Grinch himself as well as various residents of Whoville. The makeup artists applying the various Grinch and Whoville prosthetics should be given some serious kudos. Their edges are well-blended and everything looks movie quality. One thing we just had to do while at Grinchmas was get our picture taken with the Grinch’s dog, Max. Such a sweet dog, wearing the Max cowl that feature the character’s antler. Also in the Grinchmas area are special food and drink vendors just for the occasion, so be sure to grab a sweet treat!

After Grinchmas, we made our way into Hogsmeade and Christmas in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Once again, the decorations are themed perfectly and it really helps transport guests into that fantasy world created by J.K. Rowling and WB Pictures (the Harry Potter films were made by Warner Bros. however, in a stroke of brilliant collaboration, Universal has the theme park space). The Three Broomsticks restaurant is the primary dining spot I like to frequent when visiting the park and they had some seasonal offerings which I just couldn’t order – it’s a lot of food! Instead I opted for the stew and some hot butter beer. It was a great pairing, especially with how blustery and cloudy it was that day. Of course, we had to attend a wand ceremony at Olivander’s as well as ride Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey.

What trip to Universal Studios Hollywood would be complete without an excursion on the world famous Universal Studios Tour. The 45 minute tour took us to all the usual spots around the Universal backlot with the exception of Courthouse Square (with the Back to the Future clocktower) as something was filming there that day. One thing I still dislike about the current direction of the Studio Tour is its growing reliance on 3D film attractions like they have done with Fast and the Furious and King Kong. I remember going on the studio tour as a child and being in absolutely shock at the size and presence of the then-practical King Kong animatronic. The 3D film stuff just loses so much of that experience. Also, I seem to be one of the people that gets more than a little dizzy during these experiences – but, I digress…

Once back at the park’s Upper Lot, we walked around some more and enjoyed the Animal Actors show. Seeing the trainers and their animals perform is always a treat. We also took a ride on The Simpsons Ride (unfortunately, it is showing a lot of its age at this point).

Our time at Holidays at Universal Studios Hollywood was an absolute blast. It is a breath of festive fun for the whole family. Holidays at Universal Studios Hollywood runs now through January 1st, 2023. Check out the Universal Studios website for ticket information, hours, and more.

Adult Swim Horror Movie Yule Log By Creator of Too Many Cooks

Adult Swim fans received an early holiday gift last night with the reveal of a new feature horror film from Casper Kelly, the acclaimed writer/director behind the viral Adult Swim short “Too Many Cooks.” Fans who stay tuned for the “Adult Swim Yule Log” after last night’s Season Six finale of “Rick and Morty” witnessed a traditional holiday fireplace video transform into Adult Swim’s first-ever live-action feature. After last night’s surprise airing on Adult Swim, a must-see uncensored version of “Adult Swim Yule Log” is now available to stream on HBO Max and to purchase digitally.

“At this time of year, it’s nice to recognize the people important to you, and for us, that’s Adult Swim fans,” said Michael Ouweleen, president of Adult Swim and Cartoon Network. “We hope they enjoyed this gift that literally no one knew they wanted.”

Described only as a “cozy crackling fire,” viewers were forewarned that the TV-MA yule log contained “violence, adult language, and brief nudity.” After beginning with festive fireplace visual and holiday music, “Adult Swim Yule Log” gives way to unfolding a pulse-pounding story set within a remote cabin in which a mysterious and deadly fireplace constantly burns. Filled with mind-bending twists and a bizarre cast of characters, “Adult Swim Yule Log” welcomes viewers into a surreal, genre-defying thriller.

Kelly explains: “Last year during the holidays I was watching a yule log video and suddenly I had an image of legs walking past the fire, just slightly out of focus, and hearing dialogue off screen. I loved the mysteriousness of that, and a story started to form. I’m so grateful to Adult Swim for taking the plunge with me, and I’m so proud to have made their first live-action film!”

Like Kelly’s massively successful short, this micro-budget horror feature was also filmed entirely in Adult Swim’s hometown of Atlanta with local talent. Written and directed by Kelly (“Your Pretty Face is Going to Hell”), “Adult Swim Yule Log” stars Andrea Laing (“The Game”) and Justin Miles (“Half Baked 2).

The end credits song “The Fireplace” was performed by Puddles Pity Party and composed by “Too Many Cooks” scribe Shawn Coleman with lyrics by Kelly. It will be released by WaterTower Music and will be available on Spotify, Apple Music, and all digital streaming services beginning tomorrow.

DreadXP Announces New Studio to Bring Titles to Console Platforms

DreadXP — an independent horror publisher and production company — is thrilled to announce that it has founded a new development studio tasked with bringing DreadXP’s library of unique and spooky Windows PC games to consoles. DreadXP’s console port initiative begins with imminent Nintendo Switch releases of Sucker for Love: First Date, independent developer AkaBaka’s popular Lovecraftian dating sim, and the newly-acquired atmospheric horror game Iron Lung from developer David Szymanski. Both titles arrive on Nintendo Switch on December 16, 2022. Other DreadXP titles coming to Nintendo Switch include The Mortuary Assistant and SPOOKWARE in Q1 2023.

“As DreadXP has grown, one of the top requests that we’ve received from fans is having access to our games on consoles,” said Ted Hentskchke, Head of DreadXP Productions and Producer. “We searched far and wide for development partners to faithfully port our developers’ titles, and our search for talent led us to the creation of our new porting studio, Port My Game Collective (PMG Collective). We are excited to introduce console gamers to our slate of games for the first time and look forward to our goal of simultaneous multiplatform game launches.”

“As DreadXP enters console game publishing, we’re looking at our existing library of games as well as other cult hits in the horror genre that deserve to be played by as many gamers as possible,” said Abbey Smith, Co-Producer at DreadXP. “Our highly-rated visual novel dating sim Sucker for Love: First Date is the first of our existing titles to get ported. And in 2023, we’ll launch The Mortuary Assistant and SPOOKWARE on Nintendo Switch as well.”

She continued, “We also have the honor of publishing David Szymanski’s previously self-published PC game, Iron Lung, on Nintendo Switch next week. This is a new era for DreadXP, and we are so excited to put more spooky games into the hands of horror fans worldwide.”

The full list of presently announced DreadXP titles coming to consoles is as follows:

  • Sucker for Love: First Date — Nintendo Switch
  • Iron Lung – Nintendo Switch
  • SPOOKWARE — Nintendo Switch
  • The Mortuary Assistant – Nintendo Switch

Sucker for Love: First Date is available now for Windows PC on Steam, Itch.io, and the Epic Games Store, and on December 16, 2022 for Nintendo Switch. A sequel, titled Sucker for Love: Date to Die For, was announced in September 2022.

A frequent DreadXP creative contributor on such titles as Squirrel Stapler in Dread X Collection 2, independent developer David Szymanski is also known for DUSK and Gloomwood. Called “one of the most terrifying games I have ever played” by Vice Waypoint and “brilliant” by Destructoid, Szymanski’s Iron Lung was self-published for Windows PC in March 2022. The game is a short, dread-driven experience set many years after an event called The Quiet Rapture erased all hospitable planets from existence. Players embark on a journey into a newly discovered ocean of blood on an alien moon. In a claustrophobic one-man submarine, they’ll plunge the depths of the blood ocean and photograph their findings in search for any trace of remaining natural resources… and hope that whatever lives below doesn’t find them.

Iron Lung releases on the Nintendo Switch on December 16, 2022.
