Classified: France ’44 Announcement Trailer

Team17 Digital and Absolutely Games have today announced the turn-based tactics game, Classified: France ’44. Launching on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation®5 in 2023, Classified: France ’44 is inspired by the untold story of the Jedburghs – a group of heroic Allied special forces dropped behind enemy lines – and disparate brave Resistance groups working across Northern France during the weeks and months ahead of the decisive Normandy landings on D-Day.

Classified: France ’44 features a series of evolutionary gameplay mechanics for the turn-based tactical genre, including a much greater emphasis on the use of stealth to complete missions, an enhanced overwatch ability that provides further tactical options, and an engaging morale-based combat & suppression system that means every shot matters.

Classified: France ’44 Key Features

  • Engage in tactical realism: Combined with tactical stealth play, enemy engagements are designed to replicate real-world military strategy, with combat relying on suppressing opponents with morale damage, then flanking pinned targets to finish the job
  • Discover an untold story: Follow a campaign based on the heroic exploits of the Allied special forces and French Resistance factions ahead of the Normandy landings, as you lead a unique and memorable team with their own skills, politics, and personalities
  • Define D-Day’s success: In the game’s non-linear and highly replayable campaign, gain the trust of disparate political factions, manage your growing team, face challenging dilemmas, and ultimately, raise a Resistance force that will make or break the D-Day landings
  • Fight on: Classified: France ’44 will include a mission editor for the community to craft and share missions using the very same tools that the game itself was built in (PC only) and upcoming DLCs

James Brooksby, CEO, Absolutely Games, said: “Myself and the team are huge fans of tactical turn-based games and strategy games, and so for Classified: France ’44 we not only wanted to evolve the genre and be ambitious in the game we have created, but also, we wanted to depict the largely untold story of heroism behind enemy lines in Northern France before D-Day. The Allies created groups of the world’s first special forces who teamed up with the French Resistance to cause destruction and mayhem in the lead up to D-Day, something that we can tell through Classified: France ‘44’s tense and exciting campaign and our characters. We’re looking forward to delivering our unique turn-based tactical game with its mix of tactical stealth, intense firefights, strategic campaign, and strong characters.”

Roger Carpenter, Head of Studios, Team17 Digital, said: “Being able to partner with James and his team at Absolutely Games to elevate the turn-based tactics genre and peel back the pages of history to the events of June 1944 is so exciting for us. They are very focused on delivering a campaign based on real-life events and the people who helped bring about the beginning of the end of World War II, one that will wholeheartedly deliver when Classified: France ’44 is deployed on PC and consoles.”

Six Days in Fallujah Coming to Early Access on Steam June

Victura and Highwire Games today announced their upcoming first-person tactical shooter Six Days in Fallujah will release on June 22, 2023, through Steam’s Early Access program. The game will launch with four co-operative four-player missions. These missions are set in urban maps that are generated procedurally every time the game is played to recreate the uncertainty of combat along with unlimited replayability.

Six Days in Fallujah is a highly realistic first-person tactical shooter developed with help from more than 100 Marines and Soldiers who served in the Second Battle of Fallujah, as well as more than two dozen Iraqi civilians and soldiers. Based on true stories from the battle, Six Days requires players to overcome real-world scenarios with their fire team by using real-life military tactics.

“The way we play video games right now is not how people fight in real life,” says Sgt. Eddie Garcia, a Marine who was wounded during the Second Battle of Fallujah. “Six Days in Fallujah requires tactics and teamwork that are more like real combat than any other game I’ve played.”

Six Days introduces many new technologies that make combat more realistic:

  • Procedural Architecture re-shapes the inside and outside of every building each time the game is played. Just like the real battle, players never know what to expect.
  • Block-scale AI is a dramatic new approach to AI based on insurgent tactics from the battle. Unlike games in which AI is constrained to move in very small areas, AI enemies in Six Days can go anywhere on the battlefield, and they will stalk, flank, and ambush players while coordinating their attacks with each other and luring players into difficult situations.
  • Global Dynamic Lighting simulates real weather and lighting effects dynamically, so visibility shapes gameplay, especially as players move between blindingly bright outdoors and terrifyingly dark indoors. Realistic smoke, dust, and weather effects complicate visibility in unpredictable ways.
  • Tactical Indoor/Outdoor Sandbox. Players — and their AI enemies — are free to approach challenges from any direction in Six Days in Fallujah. Rather than breaching a house through a front door, for example, players might choose to climb to a rooftop, or cross rooftops on wooden planks, to attack from the top down.

In Early Access, Six Days in Fallujah will focus initially on the experiences of US Marine fireteams on the first day of the battle. As Early Access develops, players can also choose to play cooperatively as special operations or Iraqi soldiers fighting alongside coalition forces, and players will begin to encounter civilians as the battle progresses. Victura also plans to release additional co-operative missions, as well as story campaign missions recreating real stories from the Second Battle of Fallujah from the perspective of both coalition forces and Iraqi civilians.

The Second Battle of Fallujah began in November 2004 after Al Qaeda in Iraq seized control of the city of Fallujah. Six months later, Iraq’s prime minister ordered a military operation in which Iraqi soldiers fought alongside American and British forces to re-take the city. Within a few days it had become one of the world’s bloodiest battles in half a century.

Six Days in Fallujah began development 18 years ago, just months after the battle ended. Conceived by a Marine who was wounded during the battle, more than 100 Marines and Soldiers, along with more than two dozen Iraqis, have helped with its development. The game was canceled in 2009 by the game’s original publisher, Konami. Development restarted in 2017 when publisher, Victura, partnered with developer Highwire Games, a studio founded by many of the original Halo and Destiny leadership.

The PC version of Six Days in Fallujah will launch into Early Access on the Steam store on June 22, 2023 at a price of US$39.99. The full release of the game is expected to be available for both console and PC in 2024. More information about Six Days in Fallujah is available at www.sixdays.comSix Days in Fallujah is also on Twitter (@VicturaGG), and YouTube.

System Shock Remake is Out Now

The wait is over. The full-fledged remake of the groundbreaking System Shock from 1994 is now available for PC from Steam, Epic Game Store, and GOG.

Developer Nightdive Studios’ stunningly-faithful recreation of this classic shooter/immersive sim invites players to experience the classic video game, updated and upgraded for modern audiences.

Starting today, [human insects] players all across the world get to face off against SHODAN — the iconic rogue AI with attitude.

The System Shock remake combines the gameplay of the iconic original game with all-new HD visuals, updated controls, an overhauled interface, and all-new sounds and music.

Never-before-seen enemies, quality-of-life gameplay tweaks, a revamped hacking system, and visceral new combat options — featuring a brutal dismemberment system — also await players new and old.

A legion of hostile and mutated creatures — created and controlled by the delightfully villainous SHODAN herself — await players as they make their way through Citadel Station’s all-new areas, flexing their puzzle-solving skills and hacking prowess to reach new sectors of the station.

Players will also encounter traps, puzzles, and secrets in their pursuit of (hopefully) defeating SHODAN once and for all. Nightdive Studios worked closely with many of the members of the original System Shock team, including the voice of SHODAN, Terri Brosius.

Console editions of System Shock will release on PlayStation 4|5 and Xbox One and Series S|X in due course; more details will be shared in the future.

Terminator: Dark Fate – Defiance RTS Announced

Renowned strategy publisher Slitherine today announced Terminator: Dark Fate – Defiance will launch on Steam in Winter 2023.

Terminator: Dark Fate – Defiance is a gritty real-time strategy game set in a war-torn future where surviving humans fight for their existence against the all-powerful synthetic intelligent machine network Legion, but the greatest threat may not come from the ravaging machines but from bands of other human survivors.

Players will take control of armies as they fight complex tactical battles using near-future and machine-tech weaponry as part of one of three factions available at launch: Founders, Legion or Resistance. Prospective commanders will be able to play across a riveting single-player campaign with massive strategic maps or take part in multiplayer modes.

Throughout the game, players will have freedom of choice and will make decisions that will have an effect on subsequent missions and resonate throughout the game as players progress. These decisions can result in various outcomes including gaining intel, weaponry or allies in future conflicts.

A first look at new gameplay was showcased as part of today’s live. A ragged force of Founders, hotly pursued by Legion machines, have encountered various other bands of human survivors. While the player has a choice to ally or not, joining forces with certain groups will reap specific benefits. In the mission highlighted, a steady stream of Legion convoys provides a juicy target for the resistance fighters to destroy. In addition, successfully retrieving a downed pilot in the area gives critical air support in later missions, while the appearance of a new human group – the Integrators – means either additional soldiers to be folded into the Founders ranks or another foe to be battled. What’s more, with the mission’s success lies the possibility to re-establish radio contact with Founders’ command center – a newfound connection that might be less fortunate than the player thinks.

In addition, the team shared teaser trailers for the game, which can be viewed on Slitherine’s YouTube channel (links below).

A beta for Terminator: Dark Fate – Defiance will be available in the coming months. Players interested in participating should sign up through Slitherine’s official site.

While many of us plan trips and extend the Memorial Day weekend as much as we can, I think it is essential to take a step back and spend a moment thinking about why this holiday exists as well as the men and women it honors. Thank you.
