Plex Media System (Tech)

Hearing of Plex at various electronic trade shows, I was curious how it might work for me, especially as a video game reviewer and a disabled individual.  Being able to start playing personal media or sharing photos with fellow GamingShogun staff from bed when my body had finally failed out on me was something I was really hoping to find a way to simplify.  Plex seems like it just might be the answer to those problems.

Features:

  • Enjoy your videos, movies, TV shows, music and photos anytime, anywhere. – Run Plex Media Server on your Windows, Mac or Linux computer and stream to your iOS, Android, Windows Phone or Windows device. Have multiple TVs in your house? No problem, Plex also works on Chromecast, Amazon Fire TV, Roku, Apple TV, Android TV, Xbox, PlayStation®, NVIDIA® SHIELD™, and many late-model smart TVs. Plex is even available on most network-attached storage devices.
  • Make your media beautiful – Plex gives you one simple interface to organize all of your media: your movie and TV collection, your music library, and all of your photos and home videos. Plex enriches your media library by adding descriptions, plot summaries, posters, and album covers. Enjoy your media on every TV in the house or on any mobile device on the go.
  • Plex keeps track of your media – Recently added content is presented front and center so you can instantly see what’s new. Plex also knows which movies and shows you’re watching, so you can easily pick up where you left off or play the next episode.
  • Manage what’s being watched on Plex – Control the media that your friends and family can access, both in and out of the home. Plex Home allows you to create customized, managed accounts, and restrict content those users can access. Restrict based on content ratings, or share specific items. Buy one Plex Pass for your home and share benefits like free apps.
  • High quality SSL certificates for all media servers – We’ve teamed up with DigiCert to provide high quality SSL certificates for your media servers, at no cost to you. Your media server will be able to securely communicate with your devices with top-grade encryption, it’s like having your own secret service escort protecting your data end-to-end, preventing hacks, attacks, and snooping.
  • Your music’s new homeMusic on Plex is accessible everywhere and beautifully presented. With support for nearly all audio formats, all of your music gets airtime. Once setup, you can hear (and even watch!) your music anywhere, on anything, and even share access to your music libraries with your friends. Recent improvements include Vevo music videos and Gracenote functionality that improves the metadata of your music library.
  • Playlists, for endless entertainment – Create customized music or video playlists to fit any occasion, based on mood, genre, collection, and more. You can even import existing iTunes playlists, ratings, track counts, and other details! Playlists are currently available on most platforms, but we’re working hard to bring them to all as quickly as possible.
  • Automatically upload your photos – Now, photos from your phone or tablet can be wirelessly synced to Plex automatically thanks to Camera Upload. It’s a new Plex Pass feature that makes sharing special snaps with family and friends easy, lets you stream photos to different screens, and allows you to free up space on your mobile device.
  • Your big screen’s best friend – Plex liberates you from single-screen viewing. With Plex Companion, you can fling great content from your phone to your TV. Keep watching that movie on your tablet when you head to bed. • Movie trailers, interviews, and other extras – Automatically get access to high quality online trailers and extras for the movies you have in your Plex library. Also, our new Cinema Trailers feature lets you start off your movie with a few trailers for movies from your library or from new and upcoming releases. Harness the power of the most sophisticated DLNA server available to effortlessly stream nearly any format to your device, right out of the box.

Hands On:
I wanted to cut down the list of features above but each thing I read seemed like something else that our readers might want to know.  The Plex service has definitely have been designed to cover many possible aspects of user needs that each one I looked at had to be mentioned.

Let’s start with professional usage.  I can have my Editor-in-Chief on my friends list and upload pictures and video from various events quickly and smoothly so that he can start choosing, editing, and watermarking them while I am still collecting them in the field.  If I stumble on some news I want to pass along to him I can just send a quick upload while in the Plex app and he can see the press release that caught my eye or video I thought would make a story.  There are other ways to do this but the real way to think of Plex is as a complex of media, pulling multiple applications and other media sources and putting them in one neat customizable interface.  Time really can be of the essence in news and the faster it can be past along the better.

This also is important when I am doing my own writing.  If I have found a bunch of media while running around with my phone and it comes time to write and all I have to do is log into Plex and all my different available galleries are right there at my fingertips and well as interviews for quotes I can cook through a story far faster than if I have to take the separate time to download or upload to the storage cloud the media I want to use.  There has been more than a few times I have done a search for just the right trailer while on a monorail or something on my way home to write, found exactly what I wanted and when I got home had to open up a program and repeat the search.  With Plex on my mobile devices I can have it all set up and ready to lay down in the article when I hit the computer.

During certain times of the year I also do quite a bit of traveling, part of it is flying, other times it is just through cell dead zones.  With the most minor bit of planning through Plex I can make sure I have access to the media I want while off the grid.  Trust me in rural parts of Nevada you really wish there was a cell tower hidden in the tumbleweeds, luckily Plex can help with music and videos so you won’t have to just listen to the sound of the engine and your own breathing.

The last part was a crossover of business and personal use that leads nicely into how I can use Plex when I am not on the road or even able to get out of bed or off the couch.  Being disabled can be disheartening to say the least, not just because of feeling unproductive but sometimes the simplest things going to the living room to watch television is too much.  On those days I often would just watch my phone because of the ease of interfacing.  At the foot of my bed though is a television with an Xbox One and a PS4 hooked up to it.  So if I wake up and can’t lift my head enough to watch television I can start by first watching a program or video on my phone then fire up one of my consoles and pick up on the same program on the TV even if the video was just on my phone such as a digital copy.  Normally I would have to track down the the DVD, put it in the console or hope that it was on one of the streaming services we subscribe to and find the location.  I can literally use the Plex app and fling video from my phone up onto the TV and go back to watching.

A much lighter use of the system is apparent in that one moment when you find a funny video on your phone and the whole family decides to circle around the device’s tiny screen and watch.  Once again, with a smart TV and the Plex app, you can fling the video right onto the TV and let everyone watch it on a nice big format.  Plex even adjusts the quality so it doesn’t look grainy.

Last Call For Now:
Plex is the perfect way to centralize all your media into one complex for business and personal use and ease.  Whether it is watching videos and listening to personal music or sharing files with friends and coworkers Plex puts in all into one place with it’s own driving system.  I have no doubt I will find new ways to put Plex to use every time I open the application.

Necropolis Coming to PS4 and Xbox One

SANTA CLARA, Calif., (February 25, 2016) — BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment America Inc. today announced that it is partnering with Harebrained Schemes to be the console publisher for their PC Indie game, NECROPOLIS; bringing the game to the PlayStation 4 computer entertainment system and the Xbox One. NECROPOLIS combines third-person action with roguelike dungeon delving for a game that’s fast-paced and addictive, yet diabolically hardcore. Those elements, married with the game’s striking art style, sardonic tone, and easy in-and-out co-op mode, caught the attention of BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment America Inc. at PAX East last year.

“Simply put, we were impressed and excited when we discovered NECROPOLIS at PAX East”, said Eric Hartness, Vice President of Marketing at BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment America Inc. “Blending a skill-based 3D action game with a roguelike means it’s never the same experience twice. NECROPOLIS’ off-kilter humor and unique visuals add perfectly to the mix, making it the perfect companion game for Dark Souls fans and a great addition to our game portfolio.”

Jordan Weisman, Harebrained Schemes’ Chief Creative Officer said, “We couldn’t think of a better partner to help us bring our team’s vision for NECROPOLIS to consoles. BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment America Inc. is a terrific publisher and truly understands how to collaborate with an independent studio like ours.”

In order to focus on delivering a consistent, quality NECROPOLIS experience for all platforms, Harebrained Schemes has decided to move the game’s original PC-only release date of March 17. Instead, NECROPOLIS will now simultaneously ship for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One this summer, with an exact date to be announced in the near-future. “While we really hate to slip a release date, we know from experience that doing a console release right adds a significant amount of development work,” said Harebrained Schemes’ President Mitch Gitelman. “So we believe this is absolutely the right decision, and that the additional time will make for an even better NECROPOLIS for consoles AND for PC.” Harebrained Schemes will still self-publish the title on Steam, while BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment America Inc. will release NECROPOLIS on Xbox One and PlayStation®4.

In NECROPOLIS, you play as a nameless adventurer attempting to escape a living, magical dungeon that reconstructs itself each time you play, with only one way out – down. Craft, equip, explore, and fight to stay alive as you delve deeper and face ever-greater threats in the twisting halls and endless chasms of the NECROPOLIS. Have no doubt; you’re going to die – often! – but you’ll improve your combat skills, available upgrades, and dungeon know-how with every playthrough, bringing you one step closer to the exit. (Warning: “Just one more time” mindset can be addicting.)

NECROPOLIS has all the makings of a smash hit – the kind of roguelike that hardcore players will brag about beating for years to come.” – Hardcore Gamer

IN NECROPOLIS, DEATH IS…

  • …PERMANENT. Game Over? Jump right back in with a new adventurer and try again!
  • …DIFFERENT EVERY TIME. A new procedurally generated dungeon with every death.
  • …BETTER WITH FRIENDS. Drop-in / dropout co-op multiplayer for up to 4 players!
  • …MONSTROUS. Gemeaters, Changelings, Hoardmen, and more – they exist to kill you.
  • …NOT WITHOUT PERKS. Each new dungeon is littered with powerful weapons, armor, and upgrades to wield against your foes. (And there’s crafting, too!)
  • …UNAVOIDABLE. But don’t worry; this NEXT playthrough is totally the one. We’ve got a good feeling about it.

Ashes of the Singularity Gets Beta 2 and DX12 Benchmark

Plymouth, MI. – February 25, 2016 – Stardock released Beta 2 of its upcoming massive-scale real-time strategy game, Ashes of the Singularity today.

Ashes of the Singularity takes place in a post-technological singularity universe in which humans have begun to colonize the stars. Now, they face a foe that threatens to annihilate them, the Substrate, a race of machines that seeks to control the same worlds that humanity is claiming.

Beta 2 includes a new DirectX 12 benchmark developed by Oxide Games as well as explicit support for new DirectX 12 features such as multiple GPUs and Asynchronous compute.

“With this update, players can improve game performance by adding another video card,” said Dan Baker, Chief Scientist at Oxide Games. “As long as the two cards are reasonably similar in performance, they can be of any model or brand including mixing AMD and NVidia cards together. Players just insert the additional video card and enable it via the game’s video options panel.”

The new benchmark is accessible by users from the main menu with different display preferences available from the options menu.

“Stardock and Oxide are doing great work taking advantage of Windows 10 with DirectX 12 features such as asynchronous compute and multiple GPUs,” said Kevin Unangst, Senior Global Director, PC Gaming at Microsoft. “Their new DirectX 12 benchmark lets gamers see how their systems perform with actual gameplay.”

In addition, Beta 2 also greatly improves on the already well received artificial intelligence (AI) first scene in Beta 1.

“Ashes of the Singularity isn’t just a battle, it’s a war across an entire world,” said Brad Wardell, Executive Producer of Ashes of the Singularity. “As visually stunning as the game can be, the success of the game is dependent on the gameplay. That’s why we’re investing so much into making sure the computer opponents are such worthy adversaries.”

Beta 2 is now available in Early Access on both Steam and GOG. It includes single player skirmish, co-op multiplayer, and ranked multiplayer.

In the 1930s Walter Knott harvested the boysenberry, a cross between a loganberry, red raspberry and blackberry, and named the new berry after its originator, Rudolph Boysen.  Today, all boysenberries in the world can trace their roots back to Knott’s Berry Farm. In 2015, the Park made delicious history with the debut of the Fun Bun during the Boysenberry FestivalReturning in 2016, the widely acclaimed culinary creation is a deep fried cinnamon roll with boysenberry cheese topping that will not disappoint. During the food fest, over 70 unique boysenberry inspired food, drinks and more will be offered, including the delectable Berry Market Boysenberry BBQ sauce which adds the perfect flavor to ribs, BBQ chicken, chicken wings, and more. Other must try items include crispy deep fried alligator bites that are paired with farm-made zesty boysenberry aioli, deep fried boysenberry ice cream, finger-lickin boysenberry BBQ wings and many more delicious treats.  Additional fee for tastings. Guests who want to take home the exquisite Boysenberry BBQ sauce, Boysenberry Butter, Boysenberry Mustard and more, can do so by stopping by the Berry Market located in the MarketPlace and General Store located in Ghost Town. Select items are available on the online Berry Market store.

In honor of the famous berry, guests can wine, dine, dance, and buy boysenberry inspired products throughout the winding streets of the Old West.  Festival entrances will feature rustic banners and oversized boysenberries, just ripe for taking that special photo.

Walter & Cordelia Knott’s Original Roadside Boysenberry Stand will be recreated for the special event, from which guests can purchase authentic boysenberry plants. The Knott family sold freshly picked boysenberries from the original stand, and the rest, as they say, is history!

As part of the festival, the Wine and Craft Brew Tasting Garden, located inside of Ghost Town’s Wilderness Dance Hall, will feature boysenberry wine, beer and cider, plus an assortment of wine and craft brew labels, in addition to a variety of gourmet food that’s just bursting with flavor. Just outside of the Dance Hall, towering sculpted topiaries provide shade during warm spring days and twinkle brighter than stars at night.

The Boysenberry Festival also features an extensive line up of live entertainment. At the heart of all of the excitement is Birdcage Square, located in front of the famous Bird Cage Theatre. Here, a stage will be set for daily contests like pie eating, a pie walk, Grandpa’s Boysenberry PJs Contest, where guests will race to stuff the oversized long johns with balloons, and more. In the evening, the Square will have guests kicking up their heels with vine dancing, a down home jug band and dueling fiddlers and banjos!  At night, just inside of the Bird Cage Theatre, things get krazy when Krazy Kirk and the Hillbillies mount their toe tappin’, knee-slappin’, gut-bustin’ country comedy show that will have audiences clamoring for more!  Just across from the Theatre on the Fireman’s Brigade stage, live bands will play Country music’s best tunes from dusk to Park closing.

Right up the road from Birdcage Square, kids can join the classic Bear-y Tales characters in their very own pie making kitchen inside of Ghost Town’s Craft Barn. With the help of Razz Bear-y, Boysen Bear-y and the other Bear-y family members, each beautifully painted scene will follow the world famous boysenberry from field to blue ribbon winning pie! The pint sized chefs can also make their very own delightfully sweet boysenberry tarts complete with a crumble topping. Additional cost applies for tart making.

Located in the Boardwalk area, the iconic Charleston Circle fountain transforms into a beautiful floral fountain, adorned with colorful flowers and boysenberries creating an iconic centerpiece for the celebration. PEANUTS Party in the Park celebrates spring in a big way with infectious music, vibrant set design, and an invitation for the audience to be a part of the show! After sundown, Calico Stage will transform into an immersive nighttime dance party, Jammin’ in the Dark, complete with LED lighting effects affixed to the stage where DJ HowLy will spin the hottest dance music for all ages. The boysenberry celebration is almost too much fun to stomach!

While strolling through the bustling streets of Ghost Town, guests can capture the moment and the memories at boysenberry themed stand-in cutouts, like wanted posters, a boysenberry farming family and more. Festivalgoers can also watch special demonstrations including a chainsaw wood sculpting, glass blowing and blacksmithing.  While enjoying the festival, guests may meet Ghost Town’s mayor, Mayor Desmond Ryder and his lovely wife, Josephine.  From day to night, Ghost Town has never looked so lively.

Hitman Legacy Opening Cinematic

February 24, 2016 – Io-Interactive today releases a new trailer, the ‘Legacy Opening Cinematic’ bridges the twenty year gap in the new HITMAN game between the end of the Prologue and the Sanguine Fashion Show in Paris.

The trailer takes viewers all the way back to the thermal baths of the Hotel Gallard in Budapest as seen in the original Codename: 47 and to the Chilean Delgado vineyard from Blood Money, as it charts a journey through some iconic Hitman moments.

Plus, after a successful beta on PS4, Io-Interactive now invites all PlayStation Plus members to try out the HITMAN beta on March 4.

“Our initial beta was an extremely helpful moment for our new HITMAN game, as it gave us great insight into how the server game mechanics function under pressure. A lot of those pressure points are currently being strengthened for release,” said Hannes Seifert, Studio Head at Io-Interactive. “Now Sony have given us the opportunity to go even bigger to validate some of the initial things we saw. Therefore we are inviting everyone who is a PlayStation Plus member to try the same beta and you don’t have to pre-order the game. This will allow us to really stress test our server setup, which is a crucial element for us to get just right.”

Labeled “The Prologue”, the Beta takes place twenty years before the Paris Showstopper mission. Set in a secret ICA training facility, the Prologue features a pivotal moment in Agent 47’s life – his introduction to the ICA and very first meeting with his future handler Diana Burnwood. The Prologue features two free-form training hits, which will introduce players to the features and mechanics of the upcoming HITMAN game. The Prologue will also be available as part of the first episode of HITMAN.

HITMAN will launch on March 11th for the PlayStation®4 computer entertainment system, Xbox One, the all-in-one games and entertainment system from Microsoft, and Windows PC.
