(Aliens: Colonial Marines Review Cont.)
Beginning in single player missions, players will gain experience to purchase upgrades for their weapons (I touched on weapon upgrades earlier). By gaining enough experience, you level up and gain access to additional weapon types. By playing the game’s multiplayer modes and completing achievements, you also gain experience. This experiences only translates to weapons in the campaign but, in multiplayer, it means more aesthetic looks for your marine or xenomorph. This includes new heads, body types, armor types, abilities (for Xenomorphs), and more. While the leveling system feels a tad “tacked-on” by RPG standards, it works fine for a casual shooter title and it had me searching around for the scattered dog tags and audio logs in the campaign which also grant experience.
Overall, Aliens: Colonial Marines on the PC platform is fun, shooter-lite that has a lot going for it, especially if you are a fan of the James Cameron film. For that reason alone, I would buy this game. For casual shooter fans, you will probably have a fun with it if you accept the fact that its visuals are a bit dated. If you are looking at it from the perspective of a hardcore FPS gamer or simply don’t care much about the Alien series, I would probably skip it – if not, I would advise these gamers to stick to the multiplayer components, as the campaign can shine a lot of light on its rougher edges if played solo.
