The Empty Grave Haunted House 2012

I just got back from visiting one of our favorite local haunted events: The Empty Grave in Anaheim, CA. Once again, the attraction has outdone itself with some all-new gimmicks and scares as well as kept a lot of the older ones that worked. The Empty Grave’s monster talent was intense and all stayed in character throughout our visit. Additionally, most had a lot of physical presence to bring to their scares – that energy really matters in this kind of attraction. The set design was well thought-out and featured a lot of variety – from a swamp land cemetery to the inside of a haunted building, the course of the maze keeps you guessing as to where you will end up next. The location is still inside the Anaheim Garden Walk shopping center (Google Map) and they definitely make the most of their space. The Gardenwalk location is a boon to the guest experience as, after getting freaked out at The Empty Grave, you can walk a VERY short distance to a number of eating and drinking establishments to relax.

While I don’t wish to spoil any of the cool things you will encounter inside The Empty Grave, I will give special mention to the monster talent who was… “Chained up”, so to speak. You were awesome.

The Empty Grave is on now and runs on various dates through November 3rd, 2012. For ticket information and more info, please check out their official website.

Creative Labs ZiiSound D5x Wireless Speaker and DSx Subwoofer Review

I am always looking for good wireless speakers to furnish my office/home theater with. Any chance I get to remove wires or cables from the equation, I take, as there is already so much wire and cabling in my office that it could probably travel around the world many times over. Recently, I got the chance to check out the Creative Labs ZiiSound D5x Wireless Speaker and DSx Subwoofer combo. The units are classy, with black plastic construction and looks that will fit in just fine whether on a shelf, coffee table, or speaker stand. Additionally, the D5X speaker unit features a nifty iOS device dock for easier interface. Please note, however, that this is not the new Lightning interface from Apple – this is the older one. You will want to get an adapter if you have one of the new iOS devices with that interface.

Connecting the speakers is easy, and the Bluetooth connection is very stable – even at great distances. I was able to put my speaker and subwoofer units on opposite sides of the room (about twenty feet apart) and experienced no signal interruption or degradation. Additionally, any audio device capable of utilizing Bluetooth speakers can access them, so you can listen to audio from your PC, MP3 player, or whatever else. Included in the box is a USB Bluetooth dongle to connect to your PC.

A big feature of this ZiiSound wireless speaker line is that they are expandable. You can connect up to three D5X or D3X speakers (NOTE: You can’t intermix the D5X and D3X units) with one DSX subwoofer via Bluetooth. This ability to add-on means that you can customize the system as you like or get a speaker unit, one at a time, as you save up for the others. The flexibility here is unlike anything I have seen before – you can simply buy to how much sound you desire/can afford.

The DSX Subwoofer provided some really nice, room-filling bass by way of its SLAM™ (Symmetrically Loaded Acoustic Module) technology. We have heard this technology on some of Creative Labs other subwoofer units and it never disappoints in providing good performance at an economical cost. It performs like a subwoofer at twice its price point.

The D5X Wireless Speaker performed VERY well, with audio being crisp and clear – both at the high and low ends of the range. I utilized this sound system with both video games via my PC and the included Bluetooth USB adapter as well as watching Blu-ray movies. I found the D5X speaker to be a solid performer in any application.

If I could add one feature to the ZiiSound collection of wireless speakers, it would be support of Apple’s AirPlay wireless standard. That would be the cherry on top of the sundae for me.

Overall, the Creative Labs ZiiSound D5x Wireless Speaker and DSx Subwoofer combination is an excellent way to provide wireless audio to your home entertainment/gaming/theater system without breaking your bank account.

“We’ve learned a lot in our first year of Call of Duty Elite, and we’re very proud that we over delivered on our commitment of playable content to our premium members,” said Activision Publishing CEO, Eric Hirshberg. “What we have realized is that several of the Call of Duty Elite services which are currently only available to our premium members for Call of Duty®: Modern Warfare® 3 are things that would further unite, engage and delight our player community. So we are going to make them free for Call of Duty: Black Ops II.”

Supporting Call of Duty: Black Ops II, Activision will be selling four epic new Downloadable Content (DLC) Map Packs both á la carte and through the introduction of the Call of Duty: Black Ops II Season Pass. Season Pass pre-orders are now available at select retail outlets, including GameStop. Season Pass and DLC Map Packs may not be available on all gaming platforms. Pricing and release dates may vary by platform. All Call of Duty Elite features and availability are subject to change. Further details regarding the 2013 calendar of Call of Duty: Black Ops IIDLC Map Packs will be made available at a later date.

Hirshberg continued, “For Call of Duty: Black Ops II, DLC Map Packs will be a separate offering from Call of Duty Elite. The Season Pass will be a great way to acquire all four Map Packs at a discount, but if our fans would rather take it one Map Pack at a time, then we’ll offer each pack á la carte for anyone who wants it. What we aren’t doing is requiring a paid membership to access the great player services for Call of Duty: Black Ops II and we’re thrilled to offer all of Elite’s Call of Duty: Black Ops II features to players for free.”

Today’s news of Call of Duty Elite’s free integration with Call of Duty: Black Ops IIfollows the recent reveal of several new multiplayer features that are in the works by Treyarch, including an all-new ‘Pick Ten Create-a-Class’ system, an added emphasis on eSports featuring CODcasting, and an all-new Score Streaks system. New War of the Roses Content Announced

NEW YORK – October 15, 2012 – The battles within War of the Roses have been brutal to say the least, but soon players will receive a whole new arsenal to wield havoc with on the field. Paradox Interactive and Fatshark today revealed more details on new content coming to medieval melee action title War of the Roses, including brand new sets of weaponry and armor, additional game modes, and some wintry new maps.

This November, War of the Roses will see its first new content drop, which will introduce a wide variety of weapons, including a horn-spanned crossbow for ranged enthusiasts and a Hospitaller pollaxe made famous by the company of knights bearing the same name. Players will also be able to get their gritty hands on the Milanese Knights Hospitaller crafted Heavy Armor, which can be customized with any of 10 different paint options, as well as an assortment of new visors and one new helmet.

Come winter, knights should start preparing for two new challenging game modes and snow-laden maps as the war for the crown of England heads into the harshest months of the year. The first mode being introduced is Pitched Battle, where soldiers for the houses of Lancaster and York will soon learn to value their lives. The upcoming mode is launching into beta very soon, and interested players should keep an eye on the forum http://tinyurl.com/cd3ugvw for more details.

Two new maps are also confirmed, inspired by the battles of Wakefield and Towton. With both of these historic skirmishes taking place in an extremely cold winter from December 1460 to March 1461, it’s only fitting that both maps introduce a new weather mechanic that will set snow and sleet against ally and adversary alike.

Content updates will automatically add new items to be acquired in the game. The system is designed to reward players who have invested a lot of playing hours into the game and items will be immediately available for players to redeem though accumulated in-game currency. For those who are too impatient, there are also options to purchase in-game currency to secure content.

More details on the newly announced modes and maps to come throughout Q4, for more details on War of the Roses please visit the title’s official site at http://www.waroftherosesthegame.com

Happy Wars – Review (XBLA)

Ok I know it sounds a bit like a contradiction unless you are a totally twisted.  War should not be happy times.  In the gaming world though it can be very true if you find yourself having fun on a silly playing game that is also free.  Yep I wonder how many people stopped reading and started downloading with that last statement because Happy Wars takes the big RPG mechanics of a PC and makes them some simple fun on XBLA.

Storyline:

When two tribes go to war… well in this case it’s two kingdoms and they fight daily over such things as what is tougher a hippo or an elephant, favorite games, the weather, politics, you know the usual stuff everyday arguments result in that generally don’t turn into war.  Oh and a princess gets kidnapped at one point in case I forgot to mention that, which actually is a pretty good and ancient reason for war.  There actually is a storyline on the single player campaign though I imagine a lot of folks will dedicate themselves to multiplayer because it is an absolute blast.

Graphics and Sound (Atmosphere):

I mentioned they fight over hippos versus elephants right?  Well the graphics and sound are as silly as the reasons they fight.  Giant heads on little bodies all with cartoony features and silly atmospheres combine with goofy noises and Saturday morning music to make this a game that visually doesn’t take itself seriously and aims for fun rather than realism.

Gameplay:

Strangely enough this may be the one area where the game takes itself serious and has had some heavy time vested into it.  You can choose from three classes and you receive armor rewards for the different classes no matter which you play.  You can be a warrior, cleric, or mage – pretty standard classes for a MMORPG though sometimes the names may vary.  As you fight a battle your character levels up quick in battle opening up more skills and helping you earn free items.  At the end of the fight you find out what items you have and you get exp towards a character’s overall level.  So you always start at level one in a battle but as you level up outside battle you go in wearing better gear.  I know that sounds kind of confusing so I will try to put it this way: a level 15 character goes in as level one but can go in with level 15 armor and have skill bonuses as well.  So it rewards the longer term player but gives a level enough starting playing field that a noob won’t get totally slaughtered.  This makes it so that the smart player, using the environment and skills they have learned can take down opponents that in some games would be untouchable.  Gameplay consists of capturing spawn points, destroying opponents’ castles and beating the snot out of each other.

Items such as armor, weapons and charms, can be aquired multiple ways: earned in battle, won by gambling in game credits or purchased with real world money.  Normally this bothers me pretty bad because it means the game is free to play but pay to win.  However this game hit a decent enough balance that yes you could pay and level fast and be tougher but if you don’t it is still fun.  Also it has a single player campaign as well as multiplayer so you can play against a very good AI if you choose to and that AI won’t be running around with purchased weapons.  To have a free game that has single player campaigns is kind of unheard of these days so making a couple small purchases doesn’t feel as bad since you are supporting a full gaming experience.  There are levels of purchases, some of the weapons, armor and charms can be pretty pricey in the real world so it all depends on how much you want to invest.

Last Call:

This is a really fun game that kept turning into “one more battle and then I’ll go to bed”.  The servers are a little different in setup, expect to be disconnected a lot during the matching up section because I think it balances the teams then boots the extras.  I play a lot of free to play games but they are almost exclusively on the PC so to have a F2P on the console that sucked me in as much as this one did was a very pleasant surprise.  I also really appreciate the single player campaign being on the game too, if it is free it usually only has one or the other, not both multiplayer and single player.  Or one will suffer heavily for the inclusion of the other, too much of a stretch of resources.  I enjoyed this game a lot both in single player and multiplayer and highly recommend it.  What do you have to lose except a bit of hard drive space on your XBox 360?

Star Citizen Website Back Online

In all the fervor over Chris Roberts Star Citizen announcement the other day, their website was so overloaded with traffic that it had to be taken offline. Here is a letter from Ben Lesnick, Community Manager of Cloud Imperium Games, announcing the website’s return.

Official Letter

What a long, strange trip it has been! I’m very pleased to announce that the Roberts Space Industries website is coming back online as originally intended. Thanks to the heroic efforts of our web team, you can now pledge as originally intended as well as access your account information and view the real time pledge counter.

More changes are coming, too: we’re in the process of setting up the more robust forum you deserve; a search feature, PMs and everything else you have asked for will be available soon. Additional payment options and the ability to add to your existing pledges (against all odds, you demanded it!) will be online in the coming days.

It’s not all going to be apologetic letters and ‘back to normal’ updates, either. Now that we’re not “all hands on deck” dealing with the site outage you will see the Comm-Link and other familiar sections return to life. Expect more polls, in-depth ship descriptions, news from the world of Star Citizen and more Q&A with Chris Roberts! Ask him about physics! (On second thought, maybe you shouldn’t, we’ll be here all day…) We’re also putting the finishing touches on the maps and the Galactapedia.

And one last thing: your Golden Tickets WILL RETURN. We had to put them away while we fixed the site, but you’ll find them waiting for you in your accounts in the coming days.

I’d like to thank you all, personally: you space pilots have proven yourselves to be the most thoughtful, helpful and incredibly patient group I have ever had the pleasure of working with. I feel terrible that the web issues have impacted such a great group. We’re going to do everything we can to justify your treatment of our endeavor. It’s going to be cool!

A Letter from Chris Roberts on Star Citizen Announcement

Here is a letter from Chris Roberts, creator of the Wing Commander franchise and the upcoming Star Citizen:

When I said I missed old school difficulty to gaming you probably didn’t think that I would make the pledge process more difficult than fighting the toughest boss monster in Demon’s Souls!

Well neither did I!

Wednesday morning we set out to prove that PC gaming and Space Sims are not dead… and prove it, we did!

We’re absolutely floored by the attention and humbled by your comments. We hoped everyone would be excited about the big idea behind Star Citizen and Squadron 42 — but we had no expectation about the kind of praise and interest we received yesterday.

The downside of all this attention was that the huge number of people from all around the world trying to learn about Star Citizen and make their pledge, crashed our custom crowd funding page and also took down the core community site.

Until then, we were on track to break crowd funding records. Now, thirty hours later, we’re only just getting the core site back online. The proper crowd funding page is still unfortunately down, but we have a backup site that, while not having the full range of features we intended, can take people’s pledges. With this site we have to update the data manually as there is no way to easily collect the crowd funding statistics on a live basis, which is why you haven’t seen a counter on the backup site. We are working very hard to get the main crowd funding plug in to play nice with the rest of the site, so we can deliver the seamless experience we envisioned when opting to have the crowd funding integrated into the main community site. Don’t worry, no one has lost their golden ticket, and we will ensure that everyone who makes a pledge on the backup site is connected to their community account. Please be patient while we organize this process.

We didn’t just set out to raise money to build a game; we set out to build a community. The intention was never to shut off the forums, disable the Golden Tickets or stop the flow of information after the launch; anything but. We hope you’ll bear with us as we get the community back online. The features you’ve enjoyed for the past month will continue — the Comm-Link, RSI Museum and Time Capsule — along with much more information about Star Citizen and chances to interact with its development team. As we move forward in this endeavor, you are our strongest asset; a vanguard of dedicated fans who will help us build and promote this game.

If you’re one of the lucky few warriors that snuck past the Java trolls and WordPress goblins to access the pledge site yesterday, thank you so much for your dedication.

If not, we promise we’ve beaten back these evil interlopers and ask you to pledge and spread the word to make this new universe possible. We are listening to you on the forums, are committed to giving you daily updates and will be rolling out some exciting new features in the coming days that hopefully make up for our initial snafu.

We lost the opportunity to break the first day record, but the race isn’t over yet! We currently stand at $455, 590 raised from 4,564 pledges which is pretty impressive considering the outage we’ve had. Seems everyone wants the RSI Constellation and physical goodies!

But we need get this up. Space Sims trumped RPGs in the old days, let’s get a little of that inter-genre friendly rivalry back!

If you haven’t made your pledge yet, please do as I would hate for the technical problems to have derailed our initial momentum. We still have a ways to go but I have no doubt with your support we will get there. This is our chance to tell the world: PC gaming and space sims are BACK!
