Past Cure Story Trailer Released

Berlin, July 3rd, 2017 – PAST CURE, the new action stealth thriller coming from Indie developer Phantom 8 Studio, is back on the screen with a stunning new trailer. Giving tantalizing insight into the story, the trailer also impressively demonstrates that in PAST CURE, action is not just a label: the fighting animations shown are completely motion-captured, having been created in collaboration with professional MMA fighters.

There’s also great news for console gamers: in addition to the PC and PlayStation® 4 versions already announced, PAST CURE is now set to come to Xbox One®. All versions will launch simultaneously in Q4 2017 and will be available both online and in retail stores.

Thrilling stealth missions blurring the line between madness and reality

After his years of being tortured in dark prisons across Europe, ex elite soldier Ian lives in the safehouse of his brother, struggling with the consequences of the military experiments he was put through. They twisted his mind, imbued him with preternatural mental abilities such as time control and telekinesis, and fractured his grip on reality. Driven by hallucinations and his thirst for revenge, Ian enlists his brother’s help as he sets out on a thrilling hunt for the perpetrators of the conspiracy against him, and for the truth underlying his torment. On his missions Ian experiments with his new powers, quickly coming to realize their inherent danger: with each use, his sanity frays a little more, inviting the nightmarish attention of something beyond reality. In pursuit of the men behind his imprisonment, Ian soon realizes that his true enemy may be hiding within his madness. With PAST CURE, indie developer Phantom 8 Studio have successfully combined challenging stealth missions and real-time action sequences. In the world of PAST CURE, two dimensions offer two realities – the waking world, and nightmare – coming together in a game aptly described as ‘Inception meets Fight Club meets John Wick’. PAST CURE will come to PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC in retail and online versions for US$ 29.99/ € 29.99 in Q4 2017.

Futurama: Worlds of Tomorrow Launch Trailer

June 29, 2017 – ALL GLORY TO THE HYPNOTOAD! Jam City, via its game studio TinyCo, and FoxNext Games announced that their mobile game Futurama: Worlds of Tomorrow is available TODAY on the App Store and Google Play. TinyCo has released two new animated trailers alongside the game, one of which reveals the game’s all-new story created by Matt Groening, David X. Cohen, and the FUTURAMA writers. This story sets the stage for a galactic adventure that will take players across the universe in search of ancient alien artifacts to restore the fabric of spacetime after it is transformed by one of the universe’s most recognizable yet enigmatic creatures: the Hypnotoad.

“Hypnotoad has always been one of Futurama’s most mysterious amphibians,” said Matt Groening. “In this game we finally get to learn much more about his bizarre abilities and mating habits. Perhaps too much more.”

Created in partnership with FUTURAMA creator and Executive Producer Matt Groening and his Curiosity Company, along with Executive Producer David X. Cohen, original FUTURAMA writers, and Rough Draft Studios, Futurama: Worlds of Tomorrow blends simulation, combat, galactic exploration, and choose-your-own-adventure gameplay together to bring the escapades of the Planet Express crew to life. Players will experience new stories from the writers of FUTURAMA that are filled to the brim with the wit, charm, and sci-fi hijinks that fans have come to know and love. Today’s launch is just the beginning for Futurama: Worlds of Tomorrow, however, as the game will be updated with new characters, quests, and stories every week.

“Bringing FUTURAMA back in such a new and ambitious form was extremely difficult,” said David X. Cohen, FUTURAMA Co-Developer and Head Writer. “Especially for the people I was bossing around and yelling at.”

Jam City: Licensed and Original IP

In addition to its popular original IP games such as Cookie Jam and Panda Pop, Jam City has made a science out of turning some of the world’s largest entertainment franchises and brands into hit mobile games. The mobile gaming publisher is the creator of 6 of the Top 100 Highest Grossing games played nationwide across both iPhone and Android devices.

“We are Futurama fanatics,” said Chris DeWolfe, co-founder and CEO of Jam City. “As such, it is quite an honor for us to collaborate so closely with Matt Groening and David X. Cohen on Futurama: Worlds of Tomorrow.”

“Jam City has a unique heritage of translating original TV brands, like Futurama, into mobile gaming platforms that will be played by tens of millions of fans worldwide,” DeWolfe continued. “By blending contemporary culture and science fiction, we have created a next gen mobile experience for core fans and those who are new to Futurama. We could not be more thrilled to continue the Futurama story here at Jam City.”

Red Lantern Escape Rooms ‘Midnight on the Bayou’ Review

Red Lantern Escape Rooms is a somewhat newer contender in the fast-growing Southern California escape room market. Their freshman entry, “Midnight on the Bayou”, offers escapees (escape room players) a great combination of challenge, reward, and production value which will surely bring them back for more. We were contacted by Red Lantern Escape Rooms several weeks ago to arrange a visit and review from our website. We love escape rooms, and have reviewed several, so we couldn’t wait to see what this new contender had to offer.

We checked into Red Lantern Escape Rooms on a Thursday evening and signed our waivers then took a seat in a waiting area for a few minutes. In the waiting area, we discovered a couple of newspaper clippings laid out on the table in the middle of the room. One of the coolest things about Midnight on the Bayou is that knowing the story is extremely helpful in figuring out all the puzzles you will encounter. That being the case, you might want to read those newspaper clippings… Just sayin’.

We were then escorted into the Bayou High reunion. The escape room is HUGE… Aside from The Bunker Experience, this is the largest escape space we have encountered. The set design is great and the lighting is excellent at setting the mood. On this dark bayou evening, your group will be tasked with putting to rest some spirits that have never found peace since their fateful demise many years ago. While the subject matter does deal with the paranormal, the escape room was not based in the realm of what I would consider Horror, so it probably won’t scare the young ones in your group if that is a concern to you.

One element that we found refreshing was that a sort of help system is available to you throughout the experience, although not in the traditional way escape rooms do this. Usually, there is a radio or phone that you can call for hints if you absolutely get stuck. In the Red Lantern Escape Room, however, the help came in the form of an actor – a real person who is part of the show. Interact with him, ask him questions, you might be surprised what insights you gleam.

Over the course of the hour, we began unraveling the clues and putting spirits to rest. Unfortunately, we failed to escape, but we got pretty darn close. Apparently, we had just one puzzle left to solve and that would have been that. So, I guess we’ll just have to come back another time and take a crack at it. Also, it looks like Red Lantern Escape Rooms has grande plans in mind as they are hoping to expand the story of Midnight on the Bayou with a second escape room experience sometime in the future. This is a great choice as they keep story as a key part in their experience, so it will be interesting to see how the story evolves. Another cool thing about Midnight on the Bayou is that it can accommodate groups of up to twelve people! This just goes to illustrate the staggering floor space of the escape room. According to the Red Lantern Escape Rooms website, the space measures about 1,000 square feet!

There are, of course, some other secrets and surprises in store for your group at Midnight on the Bayou, but I’ll leave those for you to discover during your own escape adventure. But, I will say that Midnight on the Bayou from Red Lantern Escape Rooms is an excellent escape room challenge for both new and old players of the game which also features some great set and puzzle design. Red Lantern Escape Rooms is located in Anaheim, CA and runs 7 days a week. Tickets are available at their official website and run $32 dollars each for weeknights and $35 dollars each on the weekends. You can book your escape room experience over at their official website!

Nickelodeon Invests in Super League Gaming

SANTA MONICA, Calif. – June 29, 2017Super League Gaming, the global community platform that offers accessible esports competitions, content and social interactions for amateur gamers, today announced that it has received $15 million in Series C funding from Nickelodeon, a division of Viacom, DMG Entertainment, a SoftBank-managed fund, Toba Capital, Cali Group and multiple traditional professional sports team owners including Jeffrey Vinik, owner of the NHL’s Tampa Bay Lightning, and aXiomatic, a premier esports entity backed by professional sports and media leaders. To date, Super League has raised more than $28 million, with earlier participation from investors including Cinemark USA, Inc., ET Capital and Quadrant Management.

“Esports is exploding in popularity around the world, but the current landscape is lacking an open, easy access point for aspiring gamers and enthusiasts to connect and participate,” said Ann Hand, CEO of Super League Gaming. “With our online and live in-person events, we’re leading the way in bringing gamers into esports in a safe, fun and socially rewarding way. Our city-based clubs add a sense of belonging and fandom currently missing from esports.”

Founded in 2014 with its initial offering of Minecraft events in movie theaters for kids, Super League has now hosted more than 30,000 kids in friendly competition over six seasons of play. In November of 2016, Super League expanded its offering by introducing the world’s most played video game, League of Legends, to its competitive events series in partnership with Riot Games. There has been one season of League of Legends intercity tournament play, with the second season launching online in July in 12 markets across the United States.

“We are excited to enter the world of esports through our relationship with Super League, which has a loyal and growing fan base of kids,” said Matthew Evans, Executive Vice President of Digital and New Business, Nickelodeon. “Nickelodeon is interested in esports because gaming is an important passion point for kids today, and forging this partnership with Super League puts us at the forefront of where kids will be playing next.”

“Fans worldwide are ravenous for esports, both as spectators and players.  No one is better than SLG to bring organized amateur esports to the biggest markets in the world,” said Dan Mintz, CEO and Co-founder of DMG Entertainment. ”We are excited to partner with SLG and expand its footprint globally.”

Super League pioneered the way for accessible esports competitions by introducing City Rec and City Champs, establishing the structure and model for amateur esports rooted in one’s locality. These city-focused teams mirror the benefits of traditional sports teams and bring gamers together in a way never before possible. The Chicago Force will be defending the title for the second season of League of Legends City Champs, while the reigning Minecraft City Champs are the LA Shockwaves.

“In my career in professional sports, the most exciting thing is the energy and enthusiasm that fans show for their city’s teams,” said Jeff Vinik, owner of the Tampa Bay Lightning. “Go to any Super League event, and you will see the same energy of players and fans cheering for their city’s team that we see in the NHL.”

Operation Lionclaws LCXVI After-Action Report

Lionclaws 2017 has come and gone and, now that I have recovered from the game, I am bringing this after-action review for your airsoft reading entertainment. Once again at George Air Force Base in Victorville, CA. This time, I left the SOCOM faction and went with the Russian side. I have wanted to build a Russian loadout for some time and even bought a new AK style airsoft rifle for the event.

This year, the two sides (SOCOM and Russian) where replaced with three factions: SOCOM, Red Scorpion, and the Black Widow Militia. The idea was that the SOCOM and Russian forces were fighting over land occupied by the militia. In concept, it could have been a great political game as well, but a lot of that potential was left unrealized. This year’s Operation  Lionclaws event was much more chaotic and disorganized in comparison to the amazing event from last year. I believe there are two main reasons for this. First, having three factions was simply too complicated for both the game control personnel and map layout. Second, there was a severe lack of communications with the leadership on our side – as opposed to last year when each group had a radio operator player who’s sole job was to relay communications between the squad leaders and the faction leadership. Whereas last year’s game felt like a “real” MilSim style event, this year’s event felt more like a large pick-up game. But, I digress…

The George Air Force Base AO was over grown with dead grasses in many areas, making the usually dangerous AO even more treacherous to the uninitiated. There were several “real world” calls throughout the weekend where EMTs had to take people out of the area for sprains and cuts (there is a lot of debris everywhere). Despite this, the area still works well for the game and there are plenty of places to gain cover and advantageous positions. We had one person in our squad that brought a large hand axe and was making his own doorways inside the duplexes… He seemed to be having a good time.

Players brought out a number of types of airsoft guns, from the crazy to the basic, and it is always great to see what people bring out for the event. My favorite was a player that had made a “terminator” style P90 submachine gun and his own custom kydex pouches for the magazines. It was really impressive!

Overall, the 2017 Operation Lionclaws game was a fun airsoft event, albeit less so than last year’s offering. It is my hope that for the 2018 Lionclaws event they return to a two-side setup and increase communication and planning between the leadership and the various squads.

ScareLA 2017 Offering Educational Classes

Los Angeles, California, June 27 – ScareLA 2017 is coming to the Los Angeles Convention Center, featuring a plethora of professional demos and seminars on everything from makeup to set building to costuming to animatronics. In addition, there are hands-on workshops and make-and-takes for all ages taught by top industry professionals. Among the many seminars and make-and-take workshops scheduled this year are non-latex skeleton corpsing with Bill Ramsey, turning wood into rusted steampunk gear with Melissa “Hauntzilla” Winton, zombie outbreak silicon prosthetics with Kyle Vest (“Skin Wars” season 2), how to make scary videos to grow your haunt with Timothy Sedillo, and insights into the escape room craze with Madison Rhoades. Additional intriguing make-and-take classes include Jon Mario demonstrating out-of-kit effects such as cuts, burns, bruises, blood and more.

Is your dream date really Cinderella or a serial killer in disguise? Join Abel Horwitz’s Serial Killer Speed Dating and find out. Drew Badger will be covering the basics that every haunt actor needs to know to make a lasting impression on haunt visitors. And, of course, sound is a big part of haunting and horror. Jon Autopsy will be returning for a fourth year to ScareLA to conduct an interactive class on haunted attraction sound design.

Warren Kong of Lightswitch will be presenting a free, 40-minute seminar called “Beyond the Strobe Light: A Marriage of Lighting and Scenic,” which will cover the use of colored light, UV paint and effects with lighting, monochromatics, and shadow play. Warren will also offer a free, 45-minute make-and-take session called “Light It Up.” In this workshop, there will be three stations working with different aspects of using light to create effects.

“We changed the education programming quite a bit from last year based on feedback from attendees,” stated Philip Hernandez, Education Producer for ScareLA. “Instead of requiring an extra student pass for attendees, all programming on the Education Stage, Movement Space, and some of the workshops is included in any admission pass. All monsters are welcome in these sessions! The only extra charges are material fees for classes in which participants physically take something home with them—make-and-take classes. We’re focusing on bringing more hands-on experiences and individual attention to the convention despite the increase in venue size for the make-and-take sessions and having more attendees.”

Space in seminars and make-and-take classes is limited, and these sessions are filling up fast. To see a schedule of and register for sessions and workshops, visit https://register.growtix.com/schedule/scarela_2017
