Slitherine Acquires Master of Magic Franchise

Epsom, August 5th 2019 – In a continuous bid to update and modernize popular strategy IPs and bringing them to the 21st century, Slitherine has acquired the full publishing rights to the Master of Magic franchise from Atari. This is one of the most recognizable names in videogames history. It’s one of the key pillars of turn-based strategy gaming and it has created a genre of its own that is still alive and thriving today. Master of Magic first released on MS-DOS twenty-five years ago in 1994 and it quickly became one of the most cherished games of its genre with its infinite replayability and the sheer number of customisation options it gave to the players.

“We are looking forward to working on this immensely popular franchise”, said Iain McNeil, development director at Slitherine. “We know there is a high level of responsibility when we try and develop sequels or successors to popular IPs. We have proven it is possible to fulfil players expectations with the likes of Panzer Corps when it comes to work on these legendary products”.

Sequels to Close Combat and Fantasy General, both coming this year, are also a testament of Slitherine’s ongoing mission in this space.

“The foundations of what we play today are still traced back to that golden age of gaming. We cannot ignore that, like we cannot ignore that technology has moved on with player’s expectations in other areas such as social integration, multiplayer, narration, ease-of-access and more. It will be a challenge, but we are happy to accept it and try our best to make a game that does justice to the brand”.

Romance of The Three Kingdoms XIV Announcement Trailer

Burlingame, Calif. – August 1, 2019 – KOEI TECMO America is proud to announce the return of one of their most iconic franchises, as the historical strategy game Romance of The Three Kingdoms XIV is currently in development for the PlayStation®4 Computer Entertainment System and digitally on Windows PC via Steam®.

The latest iteration of the classic tactical series is once again set during the fall of the Han Dynasty in ancient China; where battles take place in a boundary-free scramble for land. The game’s map showcases the territory captured and the thrill of expansion using a simplified color system – paying homage to the original Romance of The Three Kingdoms XIV, released on PC back in 1985. Everything from war to diplomatic affairs will be geared toward managing and gathering land as players attempt to spread their strategies at will across the vast China map.

In addition, RTK14 will adopt the ruler-based system from RTK9 and RTK11 in order to help return classic gameplay to the series. This means that all actions – from domestic, to political, to battle – will now take place on a single map. Greater individuality among characters will also be on display; with officers from the Three Kingdoms, like Liu Bei and Guan Yu, asserting themselves at various situations in order to fully immerse players into the game’s rich history. But that’s not all, as a new Evolved Artificial Intelligence system is also being implemented to challenge players across repeated playthroughs. With organizations now determined through each ruler’s ideals, different game experiences are now possible via different rulers. Even within the same faction; different policies now bring with them different strategies for expansion, making the wise use of various officers a cornerstone of advanced gameplay.

Romance of the Three Kingdoms XIV is scheduled for a western release in early 2020.

THQ Nordic Unveils Darksiders: The Forbidden Land Board Game

Vienna, Austria and Austin, Texas, August 1st, 2019 – For the first time in history, all Four Horsemen of the Darksiders video games are playable at the same time! You and up to four of your friends can now play Darksiders together. Darksiders: The Forbidden Land is a co-operative dungeon crawler board game for 1-5 players. Take on the role of your favourite Horseman and battle alongside your fellow Riders through an entirelynew storyline set in the Darksiders universe. Fight your way through to the hordes of monsters to defeat The Jailer and vanquish evil forever!

Game Details
With asymmetric player abilities, you can play as War, Death, Fury or Strife and experience the game completely differently each time. Beside 61 phenomenally detailed and pre-painted minis, the game includes customisable decks of cards for each Rider. That means that even multiple games with the same rider will be different. Manage your cards well, as you will be using them to move, attack enemies and upgrade your rider using Darksiders: The Forbidden Land’s unique new card economy mechanic. But don’t blow through them too quickly though, because once your deck runs out you’ve lost the battle.

The included Campaign Book has a thrilling story spread over 19 different levels – grouped into multiple scenarios – to play through. These can be tackled in sequence for an entire campaign play-through, players may choose to focus on a single scenario for a shorter gaming session, or even just play through a single level. With a variety of enemies as well as numerous modular hex-tile game boards included in the game, we also look forward to seeing fan-created custom levels and scenarios!

But wait…
We mentioned this game is playable with up to five people, but there are only Four Horsemen. How does that work? One of you can play as the game master, that’s how! Without the game master, there are rules determining how the enemies of the Four Horsemen will behave, but with a game master controlling the monsters an extra level of challenge is added as suddenly they can move tactically.

The Star Trek: Discovery VR Away Mission Teaser Trailer

July 31, 2019 – Sandbox VR is announcing the launch of its latest virtual reality experience in partnership with CBS Interactive: Star Trek: Discovery Away Mission. Sandbox VR aims to be the kind of immersive social experience that people have dreamt of since the dawn of computing. Through a unique combination of motion capture and VR technologies, players can become anyone and go anywhere.

Sandbox VR is working closely with Star Trek writers and stakeholders to ensure the most authentic Star Trek experience possible. The Star Trek: Discovery Away Mission free-roam VR experience will allow players to go on an away mission aboard the U.S.S. Discovery as a member of the crew. Players will use a tricorder, fire a phaser pistol, get transported to an alien planet, and go to warp on the U.S.S. Discovery.

“We want to communicate that this isn’t like any virtual reality you may have experienced or heard about before…this is something bigger and better. For those that may not know what to expect with the graphics, the equipment, etc, we can describe the experience like it’s meant to be…it’s not a game, it’s not a movie, it’s not traditional VR, it’s a full body experience that completely transforms you, where you become the experience itself,” explains CEO and Founder, Steve Zhao.

The Star Trek: Discovery experience by Sandbox VR is directed by Michael Hampden, lead designer on Assassin’s Creed: Rogue, and critically acclaimed VR game Blood & Truth.

Guided by fan favorite Sylvia Tilly of the U.S.S. Discovery (with Mary Wiseman reprising her role on the show), players of up to 6 friends will be able to gear up on a real “away mission” (with phasers and tricorders), explore strange new worlds, seek out new life and new civilizations, and boldly go where no one has gone before.

The Star Trek: Discovery Away Mission will launch in Sandbox VR’s Hong Kong, San Francisco Bay Area, and Los Angeles locations in the fall of 2019 with a full launch worldwide shortly thereafter.

The company is planning an expansive rollout across the U.S. with locations coming soon to Los Angeles (opening this August), NYC, Austin, San Diego, Chicago with 16 total locations planned by the end of 2019. Sandbox VR is the leading on-location team-play immersive VR experience with full body motion capture technology and recently announced a $68M Series A from Andreessen Horowitz.

Silver Chains – Madness Trailer

July 31st, 2019  The PC release of Silver Chains on Steam and GOG is only one week away, we would like to give you some more background information directly from the developers Cracked Heads Games. It’s about “Manning Manor”, the gigantic rotten estate where the spooky story will take place:

“As the game opens, the protagonist Peter wakes up in an unknown place after an accident. Searching for help, he heads to a mansion which exudes horror and chill. From the very beginning, we want to show the player that they have no choice other than going to that house. Neither the player nor the protagonist of the game are aware of what they are doing here and what they should expect.

The mansion itself, where the story takes place, becomes a principal character in the game. The house is built in a nineteenth-century European style. The realities and the way of life of the time are painstakingly reproduced, yet they are in a state of desolation and decline. Collapsed ceilings, ragged curtains, creaking floors – all of this serves to build a dismal atmosphere in which the player will spend the following hours.”

“Nonetheless, the fireplaces in the house are still burning, there is a piano you can play, and the exploration of the mansion’s many rooms is frightening and exciting in equal measure. All of this gives the player the ability to perceive the mansion as a full-fledged character in its own right.

The game’s frightening atmosphere is also stressed by the score, whose slow chords will haunt the player to the very end. Certain scenes feature additional music which matches the nature of that particular portion of the game.

In addition, Silver Chains features other characters who will not leave anyone indifferent. Throughout the course of the game, they will scare you, observe you, and make you empathize with them. As we mentioned before, the player, like the protagonist, does not know anything at the start. As they follow the story, the details of the plot will fit together like pieces of a puzzle, revealing the nature of the characters completely.

Creating a suitable antagonist was a major point for us. A terrifying, unkillable monster that curdles your blood. We found our antagonist in the shape of a woman – a terrible monster that pursues the player throughout the game with a murderous intent. She became an excellent way to create the atmosphere where a monster suddenly appears, running at you, and you can do nothing but flee. Of course, we gave the antagonist plenty of background, and the player’s attitude towards her will strongly depend on how much they feel for this woman’s story.”

The content of the game is not limited to screamers and a villain, we found plenty of space for puzzles, too. They are organically connected to the plot and the mansion, preventing the player from disconnecting with the narrative. The puzzles are not complex, all they require from the player is to be attentive and memorize minor details.”

“Key to understanding the plot of the game are pages from a diary which the player needs to collect in order to understand the story in its entirety. These pages are scattered throughout the house, the player will find them one by one, thus filling in the gaps of what exactly happened there. They will be recovered out of order, and so we have put the date of writing on each of the pages. This will allow the players to pause and read all the pages in the diary, like a book, finding answers to all of their questions.

We devoted plenty of attention to the main character, too. His name is Peter, he is a young man, and he ended up in the mansion for a reason. We deliberately went with a first-person perspective and never show the character’s face, all in the name of making it easier for the player to identify with the protagonist and to experience the terror he is feeling.

We are not concerned that some players might unravel the secrets of our story before the final twist. On the contrary, that would feel like a personal discovery, and we are all for it. In any case, the player will reach some ambiguous conclusions. This openness to interpretation would reflect the player’s own view on the narrative, making the story more exciting.”

Silver Chains will release for PC on the 6th of August – console aficionados will be able to feel the horror a bit later with versions for PlayStation®4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch coming in Q4 2019.
