Razer Unveils New Blade Laptop

IRVINE, Calif. – Razer, the leading global lifestyle brand for gamers, today announced the new Razer Blade 14-inch gaming laptop. This latest version of Razer’s award-winning laptop offers an updated CPU, faster memory and a new 4K UHD screen option. The result is a laptop with a perfect balance of power, mobility and durability with the characteristically elegant Razer Blade profile.

The latest generation of 7th Gen Intel® Core™ i7 quad-core processor in the new Razer Blade is more powerful and more efficient than last year’s model, the “Best Portable Gaming Laptop” on the market according to Digital Trends (November 2016). The powerful CPU of the new Razer Blade achieves double-digit increases in productivity benchmarks and is paired with NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1060 graphics to deliver the best frame rates available in an ultra-thin laptop. The performance of the new Razer Blade is matched by its light weight and durability. Measuring only 0.70 inches thin, it weighs a little more than four pounds and is housed in a unibody CNC aluminum chassis.

A Full HD panel comes standard on the new Razer Blade, while a new 4K UHD touchscreen option will be available for the first time on Razer’s 14-inch model. Razer Blade users can enjoy extraordinarily clear visuals and intense frame rates in games with the Full HD display, or step up to the clarity of 4K for ultimate picture quality and the convenience of a touchscreen interface.

“The Razer Blade sets the benchmark for performance in thin laptops,” says Min-Liang Tan, Razer co-founder and CEO. “More users embraced this flagship computer model in 2016 than ever before, and we are excited to make it even more available worldwide this year. Beyond gaming, it has been really gratifying to see people enjoying the power and portability of the Blade for video editing, music creation and software development.”

The Razer Blade comes standard with 16 GB of DDR4 dual-channel memory running at 2400 MHz, Killer Wireless-AC and Thunderbolt™ 3 connectivity. The system offers PCIe SSD storage options up to 1 TB, providing fast data transfer speeds. Other features include a comfortable and accurate anti-ghosting keyboard that is powered by Razer Chroma™. This technology unlocks a color palette of 16.8 million colors and a virtually endless array of keyboard lighting effects that can be customized and synchronized to display in-game events.

Razer is one of the most awarded laptop manufacturers in recent history. Its 12.5-inch Blade Stealth Ultrabook won more than 20 awards in 2016, while the 2016 Blade and redesigned 17.3-inch Blade Pro received lauds of their own from the editorial and gaming community. Razer’s Project Valerie laptop concept debuted at CES 2017 and took home more than 30 accolades at the world’s biggest technology show.

The new Razer Blade Full HD systems are available now in North America and Europe at RazerStore.com and in-person at RazerStore San Francisco, as well as other select retailers and etailers. The 4K UHD model is expected to be available in Q2. For more information, visit Razerzone.com/blade.

Razer Unveils Multi-Monitor Gaming Laptop at CES

LAS VEGAS (CES 2017) – Razer, the leading lifestyle brand for gamers, today revealed a multi-monitor laptop computer concept that sets a new standard for immersive entertainment and multipurpose portable computing.

Dubbed “Project Valerie,” the system is the world’s first portable laptop with three built-in monitors. Each 17.3-inch 4K IGZO display is equipped with NVIDIA G-SYNC™ technology that is capable of producing the smoothest possible framerates and expansive 180 degree NVIDIA Surround View gaming. Creative professionals can look forward to 100 percent Adobe RGB color accuracy and the greatest amount of screen real estate ever assembled in a single computer.

Project Valerie uses an automatic deployment mechanism designed by Razer. Each display mechanically slides out of the side of the main screen and adjusts into place, making it easy for users to deploy. With integrated multi-monitor support, users will no longer have to deal with the cable clutter from traditional desktop setups. The result is a clean gaming and working environment that’s just as easy to maintain.

“The complexities of a traditional multi-monitor setup are a thing of the past with Project Valerie,” says Razer co-founder and CEO Min-Liang Tan. “Equally important, the power of a desktop computer and graphics capabilities of three top-end monitors are included in the system. There is no shortcoming in the way of performance in the face of its amazing portability and features.”

Project Valerie adds to the professional capabilities of the new 17-inch Razer Blade Pro. The system was conceived with enthusiasts and power users in mind who want multitasking capabilities and desktop performance on the go. Packed with more screens than previously possible in a notebook, Razer’s Project Valerie is capable of handling virtually any PC task, anytime, anywhere.

The proposed system retains the iconic Razer design, while at the same time accommodating triple-monitors. A unibody CNC aluminum chassis measures just 1.5-inches thick and weighs less than 12 pounds. An included compact AC adapter is much smaller than similarly powered systems, furthering complementing Project Valerie’s mobility.

Project Valerie retains the remarkable thermal management system for which Razer’s line of laptops is known. A custom-designed fan and dynamic heat exchangers pair with a vapor chamber to maximize heat dissipation.

Project Valerie is the second Razer notebook to utilize Razer’s Ultra-Low-Profile Mechanical switches. Each switch features a true actuation and reset point. Key presses are registered with 65 grams of force, mimicking the feel of full-size mechanical keyboards. The keyboard, trackpad, extended monitors are also Powered by Razer Chroma™, which unlocks a virtually endless array of dazzling lighting effects that can be customized by the user or synced to in-game events.

Similar to Razer’s newest systems, Project Valerie equipped with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 exceeds the minimum hardware requirements of HTC Vive™ and Oculus Rift, making it one of the most immersive, mobile VR-ready devices for enthusiasts and developers.

“Multi-monitor desktop set-ups are becoming more necessary for professionals, creators, and gamers,” says Min-Liang Tan, Razer co-founder and CEO. “For the first time, we’ve engineered a solution that users can take with them. Project Valerie promises all of the functionality of three screens and none of the hassle.”

The triple monitor, 17-inch Project Valerie complements Razer’s award-winning systems lineup. The 14-inch Razer Blade sets the benchmark for mobile gaming, while the 12.5-inch Razer Blade Stealth, with a starting MSRP of $899, earned official “Best PC” and “People’s Choice” honors at last year’s CES.
Razer won official “Best of CES” awards with other systems innovations in the past, including the Razer Switchblade, Project Fiona and Project Christine concepts. The Razer Edge tablet won the CES “Best of Show” in 2013, besting a field of more than 20,000 electronic devices at the world’s most prestigious tech tradeshow.

SanDisk Ultra Plus 256G SSD Review

394074_BB_00_FB.EPS_1000

When trying to integrate a SSD card into your system, you can easily get swallowed up in techno-babble.  If you like techno-babble, that’s great – dive on in, the water is plenty deep.  When I got my SanDisk Ultra Plus 256G SSD, all I wanted to know is how will this effect me as a gamer and how can I really utilize this sweet piece of tech. So, I began writing this review for the laypeople out there!

Features:

  •  Increased performance for faster boot and application load times
  •  Increased reliability and durability over traditional hard drives
  •  Consistently high data transfer speeds
  •  Backed by a 3 year limited warranty
  •  Operating temperature: -32ºF to 158ºF (0ºC to 70 ºC)
  •  Power Consumption (active): 0.12w
  •  Shock Resistant: up to 1500 G @ 0.5 m/sec

SSD For Gamers:
I promise to keep this simple for the non-tech heads. First things first – incorporating a SanDisk Ultra Plus SSD into your computer will make your boot-up time insanely fast. Windows just flies open so fast that at first you wonder if something went wrong. Nope, things just went extremely right. In the olden days of SSDs, when they were about the same size as the cards you put in your digital camera now, space allotment on the drives used to be very pick and choose. The overall consensus was that you should definitely install Windows on it and be happy with your “super boots”. Now that they are 256G with 6G/s transfer rates, game management definitely comes into play.

First instincts is to put Steam on the drive – I love Steam and have about 100 games on it, but it turns out that low load speed with Steam is more of an internet relay issue than a hard drive one. A better use for the SSD is to install those monster games that have all the beautiful graphics, huge save files and take up a load of hard drive real estate. Those games that have load times when you go through doorways into new areas or after cut-scenes. They becomes smooth experiences hopping from level to level or area to area because it is all just instant access at insane speeds. If you are like me and have been gaming for decades you will really understand how amazingly far we have come.

Another benefit of having a SanDisk Ultra Plus SSD that most gamers don’t think about is temperature and noise. Thanks to the SSD being a solid state device (hence the “SS” in “SSD”), there are no whirling platters with lots of  or mechanized arms to heat things up. Loading the games and system programs you use most on one of these disks actually will reduce your heat and noise levels as well as make your games play more seamlessly. It is also good to note that because there are no whirling platters, these drives are shock absorbent! If you take your rig places, bump it regularly or have a laptop gaming rig, SSDs will be less likely to error or suffer damage.  Because there are no moving parts there is also no problem with moving parts breaking down, meaning the longevity of the drive is way better than a standard hard drive.

Why to Use SanDisk:
A lot of what was pointed out in this article discusses the gaming benefits of SSDs in general. Any die-hard gamer can tell you though that when it comes to gaming parts brand names do make a difference. You don’t want to trust the heart of your rig to a generic name that you don’t know if you can trust. When it comes to SanDisk, they back their products with not just years of reliable brand recognition but enough research and performance testing of their products to feed even the most hungry tech head’s tastes. Computrace Lojack For Laptops Review (Software)

howitworks1

When I first came across Absolute Software’s booth at CES and saw the Computrace Lojack For Laptops information, I was immediately interested.  Being an editor for GamingShogun.com, I always travel with at least one laptop and that laptop has everything I need to help run the website, often including NDA-locked titles and information like sensitive contact lists.  This makes me a bit hyper-paranoid about what could happen to it in the car or sitting in a hotel room. Honestly, it even makes me a bit nervous having it in our locked house when I go somewhere.  During October, I lost my cellphone on a hayride and was frantic about the contact information stored on it. We had one of the “find my phone” apps that GPS tracked it and, though we were able to find it quickly, that scenario has made me more conscious of losing control of information. Of course, this doesn’t even begin to cover the cost of replacing a gaming laptop or smartphone.  When Absolute Software offered us the opportunity to try out Lojack For Laptops, I jumped at it.

Official Features:

Lock: You may not have your computer with you, but you can still feel safe from prying eyes.  Use Device Lock to block your computer remotely, denying potential identity thieves access to your computer and personal data.  You can also choose to display a customized lock-out message onscreen.  You could, for instance, display contact information that would help a good Samaritan return your computer to you.

Delete: The contents of your hard drive might be worth more to you — and a thief — than the laptop itself. But our Data Delete feature helps you prevent costly and traumatic identity theft.  With it, you can remotely and selectively erase sensitive files and applications, personal photos, financial data, and stored passwords.  So you stay safe and in control.

Locate: Is your laptop really stolen?  Or did you leave it on a business trip?  Using GPS or Wi-Fi geolocation, LoJack for Laptops can map and display your laptop’s current and past whereabouts. So you’ll know whether it’s simply left behind, or something more serious.  Even when your laptop is safe and sound, you can see that LoJack for Laptops is on the job. Note: Standard edition does not include location history.

Recover: For most people, the odds of recovering a stolen laptop aren’t encouraging.  But every year, thousands of people get their stolen laptops back, thanks to our patented technology and experienced Theft Recovery Team. If your protected computer is stolen, the team can use our technology to track it, and work with local law enforcement to get it back in your hands. Get LoJack for Laptops and flip the odds in your favour.

Guaranteed: With our leading technology and experienced Theft Recovery Team, LoJack for Laptops gives you unsurpassed theft recovery service, plus device and data protection. Choose our Premium edition and get our Service Guarantee.  If we don’t recover your stolen computer or enable the Data Delete service, you could be eligible for a Service Guarantee payment of up to $1000.

Hands-On:

This was the tricky part, how do I go about testing the software?  The first parts are easy, you just log into your account and you can check a map to see where your laptop is and check to see if it is moving (if it is moving and you aren’t with it, that is generally a bad sign). You can lock it, post display information, and delete non-essential pictures or documents to test that.  All these are easy, effective tools which is VITAL in the event that your laptop is stolen and you may have only minutes to keep a contract or contact from being compromised.

But, how do you go about testing recovery?  I toyed with the idea of contacting them and having a fake loss setup so we could see the process of tracking it down, but that isn’t the same as the real thing.  I was tempted to go over their protocol, step by step, to see how they do it but reporting that or a fake recovery could actually compromise the process, giving would-be thieves ideas on how to thwart the process.  Then it struck me, none of that was necessary, because none of that was what truly mattered about this.  What really mattered is how knowing they have an actual recovery team that prides itself on its recovery ability to the point of providing a payment guarantee and how that makes me feel now when I travel.  I still travel safe and smart with my laptop but I don’t feel nervous like a did before when it is out of my sight.  If it is in the car while I am perusing the snack aisle at the gas station or in a hotel room while I am out on a convention floor, I feel secure knowing that if a problem should arise not only are their remote steps I can take to insure the safety of my information. Additionally, there is a good chance I will get my computer back thanks to an actual, human recovery team.

Last Call:

This software is subscription-based but is very affordable and kind of a no-brainer for the business man who travels with his life’s work in a little electronic box.  Computrace Lojack For Laptops should be considered by anyone who takes their computer on the road for business or pleasure and should be a requirement for businesses as part of their insurance policies.  Computrace Lojack is an insurance policy on information as well as electronics and that feeling of security is hard to put a price tag on.
