FRANKFURT, Germany –  March 11, 2016 – Crytek released its Back to Dinosaur Island 2 virtual reality demo as a free download today, giving players everywhere the chance to experience the combined power of CRYENGINE and VR hardware.

Back to Dinosaur Island 2 received a glowing reception when it was first shown to attendees at E3 2015 and has previously only been playable at select industry events. Now, however, gamers everywhere can sample the VR experience firsthand by downloading it for free from Steam.

The demo invites players to scale a deadly cliff face as huge flying dinosaurs react to their presence, and debris rains down from above. Mysterious landmarks on the horizon and stunning vistas on every side combine to immerse gamers in an entirely new reality.

Crytek’s Executive Producer, Elijah Freeman, said, “The feedback we received from people who played Back to Dinosaur Island 2 was really encouraging, and the lessons we learned from creating it have been significant for our current VR projects. The demo goes beyond being merely a visual showcase and includes interactive elements that harness the unique power of the medium. By making this experience available for free, we hope as many players as possible will take the opportunity to feel truly present in a new world of dinosaurs.”

Back to Dinosaur Island

FRANKFURT, Germany – November 18, 2015 – Available for download today, Crytek has released virtual reality tech demo Back to Dinosaur Island for free. Achieved with CRYENGINE, Back to Dinosaur Island debuted publicly at GDC 2015 in San Francisco, earning widespread acclaim from press and attendees, and this is the first time players can experience it for themselves outside of a games industry event.

In Back to Dinosaur Island, players become the eyes and ears of a baby dinosaur in a nest. Surrounded by dinosaur eggs, players are immersed in a beautifully rendered 3D jungle environment filled with lush vegetation and buzzing with life. Players interact with elements around them, including the eggs, a dragon fly and finally, will come face-to-face with an enormous dinosaur, experiencing a sense of scale and awe in a way that can only be achieved with virtual reality.

Crytek’s Director of Production, David Bowman, said: “Back to Dinosaur Island shows how intense, involving and rich virtual reality can be. Players will see a powerful dinosaur breathing inches from their face, getting an unprecedented sense of its immense scale. To watch this scene in 2D is impressive, but when you’re in virtual reality, it becomes more intimate, and more exciting – giving you a feeling of presence and a belief that you’re really right there in a way that no other medium can.”

A video which gives a flavor of the experience players will enjoy in Back to Dinosaur Island is available at https://youtu.be/-qopI4SulZw. Today’s release of Back to Dinosaur Island is compatible with Oculus Rift Development Kit 2 models and later. Gamers can stay up to date with Crytek’s on-going virtual reality projects by visiting www.crytek.com and www.cryengine.com.

Toukiden: Kiwami Demo On March 25

Toukiden-Kiwami-1

Toukiden-Kiwami-1

March 9, 2015 — KOEI TECMO America is happy to announce today the imminent release of a playable demo for upcoming demon-slaying epic Toukiden: Kiwami, available from the PlayStation®Network for the PlayStation®4 and the PlayStation®Vita computer entertainment systems in North America on March 25, 2015.

The playable demo serves as an early introduction to the world of Toukiden: Kiwami and features two distinct game modes. The first is an ‘introductory demo’ and is comprised of the first two chapters of Toukiden: Kiwami, including the edit mode where players can create and customize their own unique Slayer. This mode will also allow players to choose to equip their character with one of the three brand new weapon types (naginata, club, and rifle).

The second portion of the demo is a set of ‘special missions’ that can also be enjoyed by those who have played Toukiden: The Age of Demons. These special missions have been specifically designed for this demo and are set to a very high difficulty level.

For those players who have never before played a game in the Toukiden series, these missions may prove to be too difficult. However, the full version of the game will increase the difficulty of missions in a much more gradual manner, so even more difficult stages than these can eventually be cleared after powering up your equipment and character.

Although these missions are not recommended for newcomers to the series, they do include a selection of weapons, armor, and Mitama the player can equip before heading out to the field, and more importantly, they will remain available for gamers to come back to for another try after they have mastered their battle skills in the full game.

Clearing all the available missions will allow a gamer to start playing the game from Chapter 8,where the brand new Kiwami portion of the story begins. Additionally, clearing all missions unlocks various special features and items that can be carried over to the full game.

This part of the demo will also feature a few of the brand new Oni — the demons that Slayers are called to face. A selection of battle screenshots and new Oni types has been released today to display the variety and beauty of the Toukiden: Kiwami world.

Additionally, KOEI TECMO America has released a batch of assets relating to Tenko, the fan-favorite animal companion of every Slayer. Tenko are an invaluable ally, as they can be sent to gather ingredients and material for crafting, and their relationship with the Slayer determines the wealth and variety of items collected. In Toukiden: Kiwami, players can customise their Tenko before sending it out on missions, equip it with Mitama that help with item collection, and can even feed it snacks that change its color!

Summary

In the deeply rich world of Toukiden: Kiwami, Demons (Oni) have hid in the shadows aiming to torment mankind. Through history, a secret caste of warriors, the Slayers, have been trained to dispose of the demonic threat before it could consume the world. However, an event called the ‘Awakening’ caused rifts to appear in space and time, causing places that had long disappeared from the world to resurface, unleashing  hordes of demons that relentlessly drive hunted humans.

These demons would consume the souls of those they killed and imprison the ones of brave heroes. Using their souls, Oni can regenerate at a rapid rate and only Slayers are trained in the proper way to battle them.

As the extinction of humanity was not far from reality, the Slayers opened their villages as sanctuaries, to protect those who escaped, and provided a last line of defense against the horror.

The player’s role is to complete various missions, strengthen his relationships with the other warriors in the village and eventually start battling the largest of the Oni to banish them back to their dimension and free the souls of the heroes they’ve trapped. In turn, when these souls are free, they stay with the player and provide him with a variety of equipable abilities for his weapons.

Toukiden: Kiwami is published by KOEI TECMO America in North America and will launch on the PlayStation®4 computer entertainment system and the PlayStation®Vita on March 31, 2015. This game has not yet been rated by the ESRB.

Goetia Preview Now Available

goetia

goetia

January 29th, Lannion, France — Imagine that you get back to your family manor after over 40 years, to discover the mystery from the past, that had forever changed your life and the lives of your loved ones. Imagine that you’re all alone in an old, abandoned house that you used to know so well. Imagine that you’re looking for clues, trying to figure out what led to the downfall of Blackwood Manor. And the only problem is… that you are dead.

Goetia is a point-and-click adventure game set in a haunted English mansion in the middle of World War II. You take control of Abigail Blackwood, a girl who died some 40 years previously and now returned to discover the mystery of her getting back from the dead and her perverted and mad lineage. A clan whose final members devoted their life to mysticism and fanatical experiments. You have no idea what happened during those 40 years, neither who and why brought you back but, you are dedicated to discover this mystery. In the end you are already dead, so what worse than that could possibly happen?

Unlike other adventure games where you collect objects, combine and use them to solve the puzzle, here you need to become an object to push the story further. Remember that you are a ghost, and as a ghost, you can walk through walls and fly through ceilings, you can explore everywhere as you see fit. But to manipulate objects, you’ll have to possess them, just like a real poltergeist would. And once you possess an object, you can’t pass through walls anymore…

After a successful campaign on Square Enix Collective platform and winning the Artistic Award at the European Indie Games Days back in December 2014, the team behind Goetia is now seeking support on Kickstarter looking for $30,000 fund to be able to finish the game. You can help the team achieve this goal by visiting the campaign website: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/438269196/goetia and becoming one of the backers or by spreading the word about the game and Abigail’s adventure.

The team behind the game is France-based Sushee game development studio: http://sushee.fr supported by a French artist Moeity: http://www.moeity.com. Goetia is being developed on PC and Mac and will be available in French and English.

The Incredible Adventures Of Van Helsing II Preview (PC)

1888931_603391399744528_680831175_o

1669816_594614047288930_1753707630_o

I was a big fan of the first Incredible Adventures Of Van Helsing. It had a Diablo feel to it but with enough of its own take on the random dungeon crawler to feel like a fresh play. There were a couple titles that came out around the same time but Van Helsing was definitely a standout with its fun interactions with Katarina, loads of Easter eggs and enough pop references to keep you smiling if not chuckling all through the game. It took gameplay serious but let the script be campy – which might not be for everyone but definitely hit home with me. So the question begs… does the second hold up to the standards set by the first?

Description:
Put on your wide-brimmed hat, grab your weapons and embark on an incredible adventure in the gothic-noir world of Borgovia, where mad science threatens the fragile peace between monster and mortal. Be Van Helsing, monster-hunter extraordinaire and save the day with your charming and beautiful companion, Lady Katarina (who happens to be a ghost, by the way). Explore the savage wilderness in the mountains and the soot-stained brick districts of a grim metropolis twisted by weird science, and don’t forget: you might never know who the real monsters are!

1888931_603391399744528_680831175_o

Features:

  •  Enter a memorable gothic-noir universe filled with monsters, magic and weird science.
  •  Play through a refreshingly unique story, spiced up with wry humor and snappy dialogue.
  •  Fight fierce battles against supernatural foes with diverse skills and abilities.
  •  Use the special abilities and tailor the skills of your remarkable follower.
  •  Customize your character through a detailed level-up system where you decide which skills and abilities you’ll need for the hunt.
  •  Modify your skills on the spot with a unique power-up system.
  •  Learn the secrets of mystical alchemy and forge powerful items.
  •  Build and develop your hideout and place traps to defend it from waves of terrible monsters.
  •  Become the greatest monster slayer of all time while playing a cooperative multiplayer monster hunt up to four players.

Hands On:
First off it is important to note this is a closed beta and a fairly early build at that. If you pre-order the game you get instant access to this beta but it is only about an hour long right now and most of the loot isn’t named yet. You will pick up an axe that has no image and is named “vh2axe” as a working title. There is a very good chance the stats on all the items will get completely reworked as well so don’t put so much stock in looting up, try to take in the experience.

At time of press, normal difficulty levels aren’t available (1-30) only veteran (31-60) but after character creation you will be geared up with a nice class appropriate set of rare gear that outshines most of what drops so you will be able to jump right into the ass kicking. There are six classes to start with with the ability to import a character from the first game (if you leveled it high enough and finished the game) but for the beta you are probably better off just going with a new character since it will be finely geared. There will also be a chance to create a custom class somewhere down the road. Currently the classes are Blade (primarily melee and recommended for newcomers), gunslinger (ranged combat with sniping), spellkeeper (elemental caster), adeptus (power caster and crowd control), bombardier (steampunk AoE damage), and contraptionist (steampunk necromancer). The classes and their armor really reinforce the gothic steampunk feel of the game, particularly the contraptionist who makes mechanized spiders (not skinned yet) and turrets.

1966310_603391639744504_1338291689_o

Just like in the first game Katatrina can be set and armored up to compliment your class so make sure if you are range dependent you set her to melee or visa-versa. Like amazons in Diablo she has many but not all gear slots so think of her needs as well as your own when gearing and make sure she has plenty of potions. Particularly nice things about Katarina are you won’t be trading her in and if you decide you need her to perform a different role whether it be melee/range or defensive, assist, etc in battle you can set all that at any time. She even has her own inventory and you can order what she picks up off the field such as gold, commons, or magoc items and when her inventory is full or you need money you can send her shopkeeping and she will go sell it all to the vendor. It takes the tedium of running back to the shopkeeper in the middle of a dungeon simply because your bags filled up. You can even expect a playfully, snarky comment as she does it.

The beasties are brand new even in the closed beta, where you get to see magical monsters fighting side by side with steampunk nightmares. There is a pretty wide variety though sometimes it is hard to tell during the beta because you will have massive hordes of them all piled on top of each other trying to get at you. in those cases you do whatever aoe and crowd control your class allows for and just watch for critical hits to thin the herd so you can get a better look at them. In a beta, especially one with press and pre-order invites, it is usually more about showing off mechanics and variety so if you find yourself in the beta and not sure if you like the massive hordes or level builds don’t give up on it, they are simply trying to showcase elements of the game.

ss_1039d7e51e9348cd4df09b6213b892f4520b0989.600x338

Characters are highly customizable through skill trees as well using points earned leveling. The category sheets are are basically melee, ranged, tricks and auras and each one has an unlockable general trait with upgrades and refinements available. So for example your gunslinger might have explosive shot which can be leveled to 10 but it also has refinement bubbles around it such as hex round or shrapnel that you can put a point into to add that damage to your explosive shot when you use it. Auras are passive effects that can be activated so that using mana might give you health or increased range and damage. WoW players who have rolled hunters have a pretty good idea about what this is like. In these ways when combined with random equipment drops it is very easy to have two characters of the same class with completely different builds and play styles.

When it comes to single player play there is storyline and scenario, scenario is specialized maps with harder enemies and higher loot drops. There are level requirements but it is a great way to gear up. There will be multiplayer modes that include games you can start or join but those aren’t currently available in closed beta. Hopefully this will be set up very similar to Diablo.

1504419_603392693077732_2114844381_o

First Round:
I played the closed beta a few times to get a feel for the game and so far I like what they are showing us even if it is less than an hour of play. The classes look nice, the graphics look great and the play is great with funny touches added to the quests. The Incredible Adventures Of Van Helsing 2 is a game to watch for to get a Diablo style dungeon crawler with it’s own feel and it’s own $14.99 price tag.
(note: the graphic below is a nice comparison but is somewhat dated with six character classes available in the new Van Helsing title)
