The Surge Trailer Goes Behind the Scenes

Delve into The Surge’s industrial, near-future Earth setting, which tackles issues of environmental destruction, corporatism and misuse of technology relevant to our own world. Taking control of the exo-suited Warren, players will explore rich, secret-filled environments and venture deep into the heart of tech company CREO’s devastated facility – all while battling crazed employees with fried cranial implants and robots gone haywire.

Using the limb-based targeting system, players can exploit enemies’ weaknesses – though as Deck13’s Thorsten Lange states, “the same rules apply for the enemies.” Positioning is of the utmost importance, and even the smallest misstep can end in death. Warren isn’t an “overpowered superhero”, and combat animations were given credibility through extensive motion capture sessions with a stuntman, resulting in combat that feels weighty and satisfying.

The Surge Combat Trailer Released

April 20, 2017 – Deck13’s upcoming hardcore Action-RPG The Surge comes to PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC on May 16, 2017. Today’s Combat Trailer challenges you to survive the deadly CREO facility, making use of The Surge’s fast, technical combat system.

As showcased in the Target, Loot & Equip Trailer, make use of vertical and horizontal attacks, as well as strike power, to target and dismember specific limbs, so you can loot what you cut. Looting upgrades for your exo-suit is key to progression, and surviving challenging physically based combat situations is a matter of skill.

Positioning and speed are vital, so make use of your exo-enhanced dodges, blocks, ducks and jumps to avoid attacks while managing stamina, ensuring you’re always in the right place to strike the limb you want, or to avoid a potentially damning blow. The rules of combat apply to both you, and your enemy: get hit in an unarmored limb, and you’ll go down faster. The Surge Trailer Looks at Loot and Equipment

April 6, 2016 – Deck13’s upcoming hardcore action-RPG The Surge comes to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on May 16, 2017. Today, the “Target, Loot and Equip” trailer highlights the game’s limb-slicing loot system in all its bloody, brutal glory.

The Surge empowers players by giving them control over what they loot from defeated enemies. Target specific body parts before damaging them with a combination of vertical and horizontal attacks; the dismembered part then determines which piece of equipment is looted―the schematic corresponding to the sliced armor part, salvaged materials for crafting the corresponding piece, or even the weapon wielded by the enemy. This means that when approaching an enemy, players face a difficult decision: do they target an unarmored body part for a shorter fight, or risk a lengthier, more damaging battle for a chance at slicing off a shiny new piece of equipment?

Balancing risk and reward is core to succeeding in The Surge, and bold players can walk away from a fight with amazing rewards. The toughest enemies drop the most powerful weapons and armor, so if you see a piece of equipment you like, you’ll need to fight hard for it―or die trying.

The Surge Gets a Strong, Faster, Tougher Trailer

March 17, 2017 – Deck13’s upcoming hardcore Action-RPG The Surge today unveils a new CGI trailer, showcasing intense, visceral combat between man and machine. After exploring Warren’s first day at the office in the previous trailer, we now witness him battling mechanical foes deeper within the CREO complex.

Megacorporation CREO works to reverse the devastating effects of climate change, but the facility is hit by a mysterious, catastrophic event. After awakening from a blackout caused by this disaster, Warren is thrust into a deadly new world. Robots gone haywire, insane augmented co-workers, and rogue AI―it seems like everything wants him dead.

Players are pitted in a desperate fight to survive, engaging these unpredictable foes in tight, visceral melee combat. Grow in power with The Surge’s next-gen looting system: Target and slice specific limbs off your enemies in battle, then equip the weapons or armor you dismember!

The Surge Modular Exo-Armor Gallery

Deck13’s upcoming sci-fi action RPG The Surge today reveals the industrial armor sets of international corporation CREO, a company that set out to save the world. Set on a dying Earth in a not-so-distant future, something went very wrong inside CREO, and you, as a new employee find yourself trapped in a sector of the company overrun by malfunctioning drones, robots, and security personnel.

The LIQUIDATOR, featured in the first screenshot, is fitted with industrial attachments for use in areas prone to hazardous material spillage. Built around the slogan “quality protective gear for the safest workplace”, the Liquidator offers super-human resistance to radiation, fire, and toxic spills, with mobility aided by the exo-skeleton.

The second screenshot features CREO‘s PROTEUS medium physical protection armor set. An experimental set equipping certain of CREO‘s security personnel, the PROTEUS is an advanced and light-weight armor granting a small health regeneration effect. It also only needs medium core power cost allowing for a little extra juice for implants.

This last screenshot features a mix of armor sets. LYNX was developed for workers requiring speed, flexibility, and precision. Far from standard issue, few CREO workers would benefit from its inherent advancements in hydraulics. It features low core power cost, but this comes at the cost of physical and elemental protection against radiation and other environmental hazards. We also see elements of MG GORGON and BLACK CERBERUS armors, designed for heavy security and riot control actions.

Each item in The Surge serves a purpose for CREO, often originally separate to combat. Be it industrial, manufacturing, for lifting or handling hazardous materials, or on-site security, the player will cut off and equip thousands of combinations of items salvaged in battle.

The Surge will release on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC in 2017.

First images released for Action-RPG The Surge

February 29, 2016 – Deck13’s upcoming action-RPG today released its first screenshot, along with a render artwork of the main character.

Set on a dystopian Earth nearing the end of its life, The Surge offers a grim vision of our future. Accelerating advancements in technology and our abuse of the environment has led to an overly decadent civilization that now lies on the brink of collapse.

The Surge features innovative combat mechanics with a unique character progression system based on modular upgrades gained through the tight, visceral combat.

The images released today show The Surge’s hero, equipped with his exoskeleton which serves as a base to upgrade your equipment. When fighting enemies, you can target specific parts or limbs to recover specific pieces of armor, weapons, or equipment you want to attach to your own exoskeleton. Of course, the best parts will often be the hardest to cut off – and they’ll usually be attached to the most dangerous enemies! Even the most common enemies can prove deadly, and the game features imposing bosses who will truly put your wits, guts and reflexes to the test.

Jack Keane 2: The Fire Within Review (PC)


Every time I hear someone in my vicinity claim that the point and click adventure game genre is dead, I chuckle. Within the last year or so, I have played at least a dozen point and click adventure games, most of which have been at least above average. This leads me to my second point and click adventure game review within the last month, as Deck13 has released a sequel to their 2007 game, Jack Keane. Set during the turn of the 19th Century in Shanghai, Jack Keane 2: The Fire Within is a solid and fun to play point and click adventure game. Unfortunately, it also had the poor timing to come out after Night of the Rabbit. While a solid point and click adventure game in its own right, Jack Keane 2: The Fire Within does not quite reach the same heights that Night of the Rabbit does.


Jack Keane 2: The Fire Within is centered around the exploits of Jack Keane. Jack is an adventurer in the same vein of an Indiana Jones or a Doc Savage, that finds himself in horrendous situations, mostly due to his own lack of planning. The game begins in Shanghai in 1899, with our hero Jack in a Chinese prison, looking for clues to lead him to another fabled pile of gold. Unfortunately, getting into the prison was easier then getting out. After Jack has gotten pieces of the information he was after from a fellow prisoner, he must escape from the prison with the aid of his companion, Amanda. Unknown to either Jack or Amanda, they have a rival that is also in pursuit of the fabled lost gold in Professor Umbati. The rest of the story becomes a race to find all the pieces to an amulet and to discover the final location of the treasure.

The story progresses quite nicely through various locals around the world. Jack will also pick up other characters along the way, including a woman named Eve. Eve becomes a rival for Amanda for Jack’s attention, and adds a little love triangle to the story line. The story-telling itself is solid and the characters stay interesting, but the overall plot is a little too generic for my taste. The story feels borrowed from many different sources that told the same style of story better then what Deck13 is doing in this game. Even the beginning of the game feels like it was borrowed too heavily from “Pirates of the Caribbean 2” with the prison sequence. Ultimately, Jack Keane 2: The Fire Within is a solid game that feels just a bit too generic because of where the developers pulled their story ideas from.

Game Play

This game falls squarely into the generic point and click adventure model, with nothing much new to make the experience feel different from other games on the market. The player uses the mouse to hover around the screen, looking for clues and pieces to interact with to progress the story further. The heads up display/UI is very minimal and shows just a few icons, one of which will help identify what items you can pick up on the screen. There is not a separate inventory screen in the game, which is an odd choice. Instead, items you pick up will appear at the top of your screen. You can just click and drag the items onto the screen to interact with your environment, or right click them for a closer view.

The puzzles are fairly standard fare for a point and click adventure game. Most of your time will be spent hunting down the right item and using it on the right environment piece. Most of these puzzles are straight forward and logical, but take some time to get used to not having a separate inventory screen. For example, it took me a good five minutes in the beginning to realize that my rifle icon was at the top before I could figure out how to shoot out the barrels to escape the gunmen on the ship. Once you get used to the locations of these icons, then the game becomes much easier to interact with.

The game does everything it needs to in order to work as a point and click adventure game, but that is not enough these days. In conjunction with a solid, but generic story line, the game play does nothing to raise Jack Keane 2: The Fire Within above the other generic point and click adventure games on the market.


Definitely the strongest feature of the game, its overall visual style and the character’s voice acting bring life to an otherwise generic experience. The game’s visual style is slightly cartoonish, reminiscent of The Secrets of Monkey Island. The environments are interesting to look at as you progress through the game, and I love the color palette that the developers chose to use. The colors help to increase the cartoon feel of the game, making the environments stand out and makes the world of Jack Keane a place you feel like you want to explore.

The sound and voice acting also do a great job in making this world come alive. The voice acting lends itself to rounding out the characters quite well. I never played the first Jack Keane game, so I was fairly surprised when Jack came across as a little more whiny and weak in his speech then I was expecting. This choice of voice acting, though, changed the character of Jack Keane from a typical pulp hero to someone who gets in way over his head more times then not.

The game’s visual and aural experience is enough to make it interesting and fun to play, but not enough to really set it aside from other games of the same genre. While I love the color palette that the developers chose to use and feel that the environments are very interesting to look at, I feel that it just isn’t enough to raise it above other games, such as Night of the Rabbit or last year’s Sam and Max series.

Final Thoughts

Jack Keane 2: The Fire Within by Deck13 is a solid and fun point and click adventure game to play. While the story line and game play mechanics feel rather generic and used, the visuals and voice acting help deliver that story line in an interesting way. This game, unfortunately, cannot compare to the other point and click adventure games on the market in terms of story and game play, and ultimately ends up being a fairly average and mediocre point and click adventure game. If you played the first Jack Keane game, then the second one would be worth checking out. However, if you are searching for a new point and click adventure game to play, I would highly recommend checking out Night of the Rabbit instead of Jack Keane 2: The Fire Within for its original story and different game play mechanics.
