Recently, we got the chance to check out the SMG-8 gas blowback airsoft gun from the guys at EVIKE and WE-Tech. The SMG-8 is an MP7 style airsoft sub-machine gun that has so much going for it that I would have no problem using it as either a primary airsoft gun or backup piece. Out of the box, you will find the SMG-8 to be stout yet rugged – measuring only 419mm (16.5 inches) in length when the stock is retracted, yet weighing almost 4 lbs when loaded. WE-Tech has included a couple of rails that you can mount on the front of the SMG-8 should you choose to do so as well as one 44-round magazine and speed loader. The SMG-8 uses WE-Tech’s newest gas system, the “NG3”. We would like to thank Evike.com for sending us out one of these little beauties for testing.

When I started testing the SMG-8, I was immediately surprised by two factors: Its accuracy, and the fact that the magazine only fired half its load before running out of gas. Thankfully, this gas leak was short-lived as it only happen that one time. I believe the cause of this gas leak was that the magazine seals were dry due to it never being used. Its accuracy, however continued to stun me with every round I shot. I had not even adjusted the SMG-8’s hop-up unit and was successful at striking near my aimpoint out to about 100 feet.

Technically, WE-Tech does state that you can use green gas, propane, or red gas in the gun – although we only had green has on-hand for our usage. We chronographed the SMG-8 using .20G BBs and found it had a velocity ranging between 360 and 390 FPS. One of the most notable features of the WE SMG-8 is the recoil felt while firing it. This airsoft gun kicks like a mule and adds a lot of game-enhancing feedback for the player. Another cool feature of the airsoft gun is its bolt lock back feature. When the magazine is dry, the bolt of the gun locks back until the release level is pressed.

Overall, the WE-Tech SMG-8 gas blowback airsoft gun is a terrific option for those of you wanting to field a sub-machine gun style airsoft gun. It is very rugged and accurate, and would make for a fine primary airsoft gun choice or backup piece.
